Ever seen this fella?

Old-Skool Second Life Eye-in-Hand

If you haven't sighted him — the classic Second Life eye-in-hand — as a desktop shortcut, maybe you've seen him inworld, spinning around relentlessly and handing out notecards before he… eventually gets replaced.

Y'see, the time was before Second Life 1.6, and this also used to be the viewer's icon. Afterwards, things were never the same again: shaded more gracefully, sleeker outlines, and tight: but… anemic, almost as if its seed of vitality had been drained out thru its spine, green gusto giving way to yellow-bellied cowardice.

i am the ænemy eye-in-hand second life

I MISS YOU, OLD SECOND LIFE HAND! PLEASE COME BACK!

I agree, there has been a definite reduction in the aggressive greenness of the Scary Green Eye Hand Thing, as I dubbed it. It is considerably more pastel now and the shiny has been turned down.

I would like to know who came up with it in the first place. I'm sure it has some esoteric significance… possibly Egyptian, relating to the ancient secrets discovered carved on a prim by archaeologists, brought by Philip to the secret chambers below the Laboratory, where developers work tirelessly to bring about what they call the New Age of True Enlightenment…

…I have said too much. *They* are coming, I fear. I must away.

I wonder if it's just an attempt by LL to make the client look more "corporate"? One thing it definitely looks now is "less watermelony…"

And might this be related to the fact that, the last few times I've logged in, I haven't seen the "landscape" behind the stats and the latest posts from the Grand Unified Linden Blog on the login screen, just a black screen with the logo? I mean, not that I stay at the login screen very long, just long enough to whack the Enter key and begin the login sequence, but still.

I think it's a combination of the Eye of Sauron and the Hand of Saruman the White. ( but in green )

Phillip Linden is just hinting at his plans for world domination!!

Ordinal: Haha I like "SGEHT" for short. Wish I knew who exactly made it, too. Now that you mention, it appears to have Lovecraftian overtones written all over it! I have a pendant with the following card, beautifully written by Hamlet Linden (now Hamlet Au aka James Wagner Au):

The eye observes the world, the hand shapes it. For this reason, many cultures embrace the eye-in-hand as a symbol of creation that springs from knowledge — as do we. Take it as your invitation to help create a Second Life that inspires ever more wonder, ever more imagination.

So, eye-in-hand, eh? What about nose-in-foot?

Erbo: While I never asked the graphic design experts @ LL about why it was changed, it's harder for me to spot the shortcut on my desktop now. The actual SL logo tones as seen on the home page are rather muted. "just a black screen" sounds like a bug! Have you seen the Focus Beta's splash screen? It's different.

Shockwave: Hahaha that cracks me up so much. I must say I'm all for SL world domination! :D

Erbo – the black screen with the spinning tiny logo isnt a bug. Its merely the browser screen connecting to the SL servers. Sometimes, if there are alot of resis online, or your compy or intarweb is running slow, it might take a while to load. If you pay attention to it, it *should* say "Loading…" underneath it.

I sometimes race against my connection, and see if I can log in before seeing everything. Sometimes I win, sometimes I dont….. meh, small things.. >.>
