13 lucky WindLight, machinima, & more video tutorials!
Posted on: September 18, 2008
Like I promised (and I like to promise), my newest Second Life video tutorials are here! QUICKTIPS VOLUME 8. Following in the tradition of previous QUICKTIPS, all but 1 are effectively (not counting bumpers) 2 minutes or less, meaning you can learn something in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee. Arguably, this may be more healthy. And breaking from tradition, this round of QUICKTIPS has more cohesive themes…
… let's feast!
WindLight
Some of my fave queries concern how I accomplished certain special effects in my snapshots and movies. I'm here to share those secrets so you can get the most out of WindLight "killer skies". First, start by downloading my FREE presets pack (over 100+ sky & water settings)! Then, I'll show you how to turn off classic clouds and why it matters. We'll cap this off for now with a couple cinematic atmospherics.
Learn how to install and enjoy my FREE presets pack!
Turn off classic clouds
Make a disaster movie sky
Make a dramatic fake moon
You can of course use these techniques when making movies in Second Life, which is another way to say…
Machinima
These tutorials will be included inline with my upcoming easy-start guide. (Like many things I do, I'll be piecing it together organically so you'll be able to witness its incremental growth.) Knowing how to hide the UI is a must. Furthermore, some of the most simple camera motions add up to higher production values and sheer kewlness. Don't miss out as I show you how to take control of your camera, and don't forget to pick up a free FollowCam on Here island (click to teleport)!
Hide the user interface
Show your avatar in Mouselook
Camera controls, keyboard tricks
Change camera zoom time
FollowCam for better camera angles
Misc.
Lastly but not leastly, these are in response to a potpourri of questions and concerns that've come up. Practical solutions/workarounds for everyday Second Life problems, tied in with creative advice to boot. I'm sure you'll love it.
Brand-name what you sell
Drag into contents without activating
Retrieve a HUD that's gone offscreen
Stop inventory open spam
And now…
have suggestions for future QUICKTIPS? I've got your ear right here, so let me know directly. Remember what I said about what makes a good video tutorial, and don't just think big, think about how broadly your great idea can help others if I make it into a vidtut!

Hi Torley!
Thanks for coming out with new videos!
I do have a question though… I like to download all the videos, then watch them later and delete them as I go. But I don't see a download link anymore… am I just missing it?
Thanks again!

I know the list is rather long, if you know a better way for me to present this info on my server, let me know and I'll research it!

P.S. They're also on the official Linden Lab Amazon S3 server @ http://vidtuts.s3.amazonaws.com/ , but I don't how to show the whole directory openly… an automatic way would be great!
(Previously, I manually updated a wiki page, but that's tedious to do in the long run.)

Hi Torley,
I have been following your vidtuts for a quiet a while
as they have changed my sl severly.
Finally I had the controls in sl i ever wished for.
I wished that the tutorials above had been on the sl
site. I had to dig deep to find your work
Pardon for this digging, however they are most helpful.
Erm, is there a special reason we have hardly have seen you on the sl site?

LINDA! Glad to see you here! And thanks, I'm sorry it was not as easy as it should be.
Here's what's going on: (1) communications changes and (2) there WILL be an easier way to search for video tutorials on the official Second Life site. We're working on it, and I'll be sure to announce when that happens.
In the meantime, I'll continue to share video tutorials right here on my site, so if you'd like to subscribe via RSS or keep checking back, I welcome you!
