Torley Lives

Random thots

With the "random" being half of a total truth.

It's not the New Year, or even the Chinese New Year, but it feels this way to me. Thus begins the discourse…

I want, in Second Life, to see more office buildings. That would be lovely. With great furniture to mass. YUGE skyscrapers, masses of prims, bold, decadent, luxurious buildings to do business which I do not understand but can appreciate. I want this. Seigmancer Nino's got some great techy builds which you may sometimes see in the sandbox, Nexus Prime (Gibson) is still redefining itself, DNA Prototype erected something very fine on Sheep Island.

I also want many more builders to use lighting and shadow effects.
It's not difficult to grab a circular shadow texture and throw it, like a cozy carpet, under a round table. And it enhances a lot. No, it isn't the most elegant or efficient approach, nor should it be—it's gnawing at future promises which will fall on our heads like candy does from a pinata. If you want free shadow textures made by Cory Edo of Tiny Seadog, ask me. And if you've made free ones you want me to distro, send 'em my way. My arms are more wide than Temba.

I would like to see more, better customer service from inworld businesses. I will never forget the day Ameshin Yossarian greeted me at the door of Curious Kitties, before it was a sim unto its own. How quaint that is in SL. Shame. It should not be. Some make ugly excuses, but in an avatar-centric world, it makes sense to be there. I have no doubt more can do it to great success. Today, I visited June Dion's BareRose @ Wolof (169, 6, 34), another Japanese establishment which has grown much from its humble roots. Ami Kawabata and Bodhi Backbite were there to offer assistance. I thank them.

(If you aren't caring about your customers, you dishonor your name.)

More custom terrain textures.
Make yourself stand out on the map. It doesn't have to be grossly exaggerated map art. Just think of the ground. It's a foundation. It's essential. You need the terrain. Build on it, and let it, as the surface of your Second Life, be a canvas.

More intergenerational fun. I'm passionate about seeing Resis from '02 get together with ones from '06. Sharing of stories, rezzing of objects, FUN. Someday, peeps will go "What's a camping chair?" or otherwise inquire about them in the same way that the classic voting booths are regarded as antiquities. "Do they still work?" may be asked too. And there'll be laughs. Not today. Today, there's a lot of controversy, a lot of tears and frustration. But it will not always be this way.

More communication. I know there's a lot of hunger for it, I see this on the SL Forums a lot. Resis wanna hear from Lindens what's going on. "Gimme news!" My style is very raw and spontaneous. I won't give a generic "I speak what's on my mind", but I'll just do it, and leave the explaining to others. A tornado doesn't ask questions before it takes your cows and ravishes your… wait, that's not a tornado!

Abundance of gridwide vehicle rides without being knocked off. Ejection scripts without warning high in the sky—I'll send an abuse report! I'm passing by, I'm professional, I come in peace. There's no good reason why I should get tossed from a pleasant hot air balloon tour. And yet, several times, it happened the other day. Now that the bad's out of the way, here comes the good: it was nice to see Chage McCoy on for so long, piloting a bunch of us to the east and back to Abbotts. He normally logs off abruptly. I believe in change.

And, it's nice to see the world. Some people spend their Second Lives cooped up in a single sim, or block of them. If that's your bag, alright. But just like you can have a home page on the web and visit many other places, don't deny your urge to explore. Tap into that inner power, experience. You can always come back home.

Many, many more "little" things that make a big difference. Ever heard three words, "I LOVE YOU"? That, and why isn't "Edit" (Ctrl-3) changed to "Build" to be the same as the button?

I want lotsa enthusiastic volunteers! I'm in awe of the Resis who love to help. They make Second Life better. I wouldn't be here today were it not for volunteer helps. I know some of them want to be Lindens too—that's very admirable. I encourage looking up at peers who are shining lights, so that you too, will glow brightly. Hello, Tateru Nino, who is shown here conducting a Gathering of Volunteers meeting @ 3 AM SLT.

Less negativity. That goes without saying, so I'll say it anyway.

Rippleshock. Being able to see the connections. Visiting 14 discreet locations, guided by intuition, and noticing each one has a set of ante Flan's waves, or Compulsion Overdrive's F2050—still a stellar gem as a first vehicle, IM me for a free one! Popularity in patches. Knowing that proximity isn't defined strictly by geographical locations in here. Everyone's just a few keystrokes away. The gift. Dropping into a sim as it rezzes, summing up everything you enjoy about it after the first minute. Noticing flaws in virtual reality—appreciating the flaws for what they're worth.

Sending more freaky TORLEY LINDEN bares to Resis, giving out my FREE texture packs too. Watching for reactions. (Why hasn't anyone made an HUD frame like a security camera yet?)

Remember, no matter what you say, it doesn't have to be wrong or right, but if you throw enough words at it and say it with confidence, it will work. "Enough" can mean a little or a lot or just about anywhere in between; "confidence" is non-negotiable.

Crapulous is a great word. It means exactly what it sounds like!
I do not feel crapulous.

Seek out other cultures. Including bacterial ones. We are, after all, in an age of viral.

Make up your own abbreviations.
Use them frequently.

Realize that you can go from wishing to ordering within the space of a few short paragraphs.

Second Life needs more rice paddies and wading swamps. Where the water is up to your knees. Oxen are a plus, rice even moreso. Chinese weddings don't have breadsticks. My biological father grew up in the rural greens of Canton; he knew this. I, do not—I have heard of it, but that is not the same as knowing it.

Being There—I should watch someday.

Unable to comprehend, yet able to understand.

O Gleeful Joy!

I had to laugh awhile ago when a friend wondered if my homepage was set to HappyNews.com. I hadn't even heard of the 'site before, but it may have only been a matter of time. I'm going to bed shortly 'cuz I gotta get up for work (in the same place I play), and I'm looking forward to a great week.

Second Life 1.9 is planned to be released this Wednesday. You can play with the Preview. I know how hard many Lindens have been working on it, and I hope it'll prove rewarding for many more Resis. I can't wait to see it roll onto the Main Grid because of longtime annoying problems which have been fixed!

Among them—and I take personal note of these things—are the following:

  • FORCE SUN now under the WORLD menu instead of being hidden in DEBUG. It's so commonly-used that easy access is a must! Already I've heard cheery reactions, and further suggestions to make the daylight persist across sessions like an "Always On", and a way to reset the sun position to what it actually is without having to relog! We'll see.
  • You will now see what attachments are worn to which point, both in inventory and the EDIT menu. And, beyond showing names, if you try to attach something to a slot that's already taken—for example, you're wearing a watermelon on your head and want to attach a zebra—you will now get a well-meaning warning message!
  • Teleports should be overall FASTER and BETTER. Even when I attached a whole slop of schtuff onto me in Preview, TPs were way smoother—less time wasted on that scary black screen. Someday I hope we'll have a crossfade or other kewl transitory effect! Also, if you return lots of objects, Pending Downloads and Uploads should no longer block your TPs! I'm optimistic we'll be saying goodbye to the days where this was said: "HELP I'M STUCK ON AN ISLAND AND CAN'T TP OUT!"
  • Planar textures, which was requested for a long time I know before some peeps went quiet, thinking it would never happen. But the time has come! Do it for yourself and see what it does.
  • Estate managers and many more estate tools, strong steps towards better land controls. A big plus for busy estate owners who want to delegate power to take care of their islands… and in some cases, continents. BTW, WORLD menu —> REGION/ESTATE now has all these little — buttons explaining the features. They may seem a little unsightly, but I'd prefer having them than no help at all.
  • One-click functionality! This has actually been taken out of the initial 1.9 release but it will be back after it's refined. Ever wonder why sitting in Second Life was such a pain in the ass (hehe)? Wonder no more, because with this, you just use a popup menu, and you can sit on the object with a SINGLE click without having to face away from it, right-click, in some cases awkwardly manuever your cam, etc. EASY PEASY!
  • Little tweaks that make a big difference. I had a dream that "Show Me" on the map was changed to "Show My Location", and indeed it has been! ('Cuz the former made no sense… show me what?) Also, the cold "Clear" in inventory is now a more accurate "Show All". In case this boondoggles you, worry not—there was a time when "Abandon Land" was a more ambiguous "Release Land", and accidental land releases were a source of grief for many involved. Now, it's like "HAW HAW, REMEMBER THAT?"
  • Speaking of the map, the Zoom slider no longer mashes into the buttons when you resize the window.
  • FollowCam follies! The FollowCam allows the camera to be automatically scripted, allowing for better moviemaking, vehicular mayhem, and a plethora of features I'm sure I haven't even considered yet—but I'll love them when they're out! Some Resis wondered where the heck did this come from, but really, it's been bubbling under the surface all along and will lead to future progressions. I remember when I was new, I was told that one of the reasons vehicles sucked (aside from bad sim crossings) was that the camera was so stiff and jerky. (I have my Camera Springiness set to 10, BTW.) A lot of current content may stand in good graces to be updated with FollowCams.
  • Aaaand… check this out:

YES THAT'S RIGHT! After what seems like eons, arrows will not be so badly obscured while building! Previously, the red, green, and blue axis arrows were difficult to see against, well, red, green, and blue objects. Being a watermelon-lover, this proved problematic for me. They'll now get darker dynamically, depending on what they're overlayed on. One problem I did notice with this, tho—is against a black prim, they'll be harder to see. I will bug report this, but have technofaith it will get even better…

Snap to Edge

Several Resis have brought up the suggestion of a "Snap to Edge" feature for Second Life recently. It's a simple idea: when building, or simply moving objects, it aligns the edge of one to the edge of another so they're THISCLOSE. The math is important and let's keep it aside for now and think of how practical it'd be: ever want to put a loveseat right atop your house's floor? And how about arranging fences next to each other? Maybe you'd like an easier way to hang that photo WITHOUT MAKING IT GO INTO THE DAMN WALL! (Which necessitates the cumbersome step of moving the wall, which leads to many worse things…) Currently, we can Snap to Grid, but it's not "intelligent". It goes by number, and even the Reference grid doesn't take into account the actual context of objects around it.

Fascinatingly, you may have noticed several of SL's own windows, like Inventory, will "snap" if you move them close to a corner of the screen. That autoalignment is without a doubt a big boon! Now consider applying this inworld.

Orbitus Teranium - Estate Terrain Textures

As always, I bring you what's on my mind and in my heart. I islandhop a lot. If you own your own private island in Second Life, CONGRATULATIONS! But what I gotta say is: one of the unique benefits of doing so is being able to change the terrain textures on your estate. Have you done so? And if not, why not?

It all starts with a trip up to WORLD menu —> REGION/ESTATE —> TEXTURE tab.

Sure, default Linden grass and rocks works nice for the mainland, but you are not that! Is there something that'd better suit your artistic vision and your creative expressivity to rule the roost of your domain? THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND PLZ.

Now take a deep breath.

And relax.

I see so many islands using the "stock" textures. Does a great guitarist personalize her instrument, selecting the best strings as fingerweights, perhaps attaching stickers, carving a heart in the back, other custom touches? YES! And you, too, can leave your own mark on your island! Some beaches would be better served with the wave wet white sand they're calling out for—honestly.

'N' so… I'm going to bring it up, some of the finestkine I've seen!

268 x 268 pixels… The Office! So easy to spot on the map. When most is green, it is pink! Lots of fun things going on there, and I can't say I object to the color scheme used by their builders. ;) It reminds me of Oneironaut Escher's place in Kaminari, really a fertile breeding ground for ideas.

Curious Kitties! Something that may strike you and appear to be familiar if you enter this island of Ameshin Yossarian's, is "What is that texture? It looks so damn familiar!" Infact, it's one of the default Atoll roof ones, "atoll_shackRoof_metal_2"—twisted around in a way which only a terrain mesh can organically bend, unlike prims (which are hard to organically distort). Context meets consequence!

Enter the doublebind. I thot that by the name, British Isles, this would be a rather formal region not unlike a certain video game which also has an avatar. I went, and saw, and it turned out to be full of highly-saturated goodness, a tip of the hat to more interactive entertain: Super Mario Bros.! But that's not all. Colorful castles and more abound, a nice trip. Again, not the most elaborate, but a superb example of unique estate terrain textures.

And that brings us to…

Wait, we might as well go out with a bang! AUTOCONTRAST!!!

Das Rheingold! RUR RUR RUR!

And let's look at some inworld shots for the final curtain call:

So really, if you have your own island, you owe it to yourself to take advantage of what we offer!
