80 skies - that's how many WindLight presets I've made
Posted on: August 2, 2007It's amazing what you get out of doing a little bit each day. "Chipping away at it", as they say. That's exactly what happened when I looked at my long dropdown menu of WindLight sky settings, and saw no less than 80 (there were a few others I wasn't quite satisfied with, and scrapped them). Holy moly!
All of these have been used in past snapshots I've posted. Look closely and you may recognize a few โ that's right, you're getting veritable, bona fide Torley goodness as channeled through my passion for our new skies. Most were birthed out of the basic day cycle by Pastrami Linden aka Asi Lang, so much respect to him for originating this art, and of course, props to our whole WindLight Team.
These skies are all local files on my hard drive, and if I wanted to share them when First Look: WindLight re-comes out, that means I'd have to post a ZIP file or somesuch thing for you to download and manually install in your "app_settings" folder. Not as convenient as trading inventory inworld (share-able skies are in the works), but OK for now. Maybe some of 'em should be bundled presets in the default install? Whaddaya think? I'm not the best judge, so please let me know which are your favorites in the comments:
(Mebbe I should make 20 more for a round 100?)

COOL! Torley, when WindLight's out, send me a copy of your Presets File

Don't bother knocking a round number out if it gets too strenuous okay?
Having said that this will put a smile on people's faces either as a client-side override, or a estate setting.

"Gelatto"
"Good for marriage"
The craziest-looking ones. I think it's amazing that this is possible. Can I ask: do user settings automatically override estate settings? Or perhaps, is there a setting now where you can make sure you're seeing the "estate sky?"

Turtle island is really nice. I've always liked that name
August 4th, 2007 at 1:42 PM PDT
I'll second Turtle Island. I also liked Fine Scottish day, Azure Desertation and An incongruent truth, in no particular order.
I guess I like the more traditional ones. I can't wait for WindLight to go live. ^_^'

I'll prolly post the presets file if some/all don't get included in the default install, just so each & everyone who wants 'em can get 'em.
Thanks for the recommendations on your faves!
Trivia: I used "Turtle Island" for when I was snapshotting a sculptie turtle with glow.
WindLight is currently *only* client-side, but we're intending to add server-side override โ on a region-specific basis, like how it is today, only a lot more versatile because of eventual custom skies we want to let everyone share as inventory.

From the sublime to the ridiculous. I think you've done them all!

P.S.
I'm a traditionalist! I want SL to look real. I absolutely love the Azure desertation ones. So tranqill.

@Nina: Thanks for your feedback!
@sean: At this point, looks like within a few weeks. We'll be sure to announce on the Official Linden Blog when it's back.
And tentatively, 6 of these will be included in the WindLight preset; some have been tweaked further and renamed slightly. Stay tuned to find out which ones.

Hi Torley, first of all I have to thank you. I already used to take a lot of snapshots in SL but after windlight surfaced and expecially after installing your presets I become almost addicted to sl photoshooting… maybe I should say "I hate you" for this instead of "thank you"
The presets I like the most are Peach Peche, This alien life and Study vassels.
Even if I don't use it (and I can't really say I like it) I owe something to the "What am I thinking" preset from the archive on the sl wiki. I owe you for it because it got me started in my research for a black and white setting that leaded me to an unespected "drawing effect" preset.
I just wish there was a "saturation" slider in the windlight advenced settings and I would become even more addicted to windlight
Thanks again

Hi Torley,
Is it possible to start SL with a favourite sky preset parameter in the shortcut command line??

@Fifi: Not that I know of. What you could do is create new presets with the same names as the defaults and replace those, and that should work โ but it's a bit more trouble.
