A fortnight ago, Trevor F. Smith had some really nice things to say about me.
Today, I read a blog post by Lordfly Digeridoo which initially made me very unhappy.
I left a comment:
Lordfly, I found this mean-spirited, and inaccurate. I wish you could have told me before, personally, that you found my forum posts so distasteful, and I also wish you could’ve suggested some ways I could improve.
What’s completely missing here is mention of the many, many writings I do make — which involve me seriously and deeply inquiring about Resident troubles. Not just recently, but over the last long stretch of months. Among other things, when I was CommMonkey last week, I helped draw fellow Lindens’ attention to some of the absolutely awful bugs which were causing content loss, got in touch with numerous Resis (which is just short for “Residents”, as “rez” is short for “resolve”) to make sure they were alright, and opened issues on a plethora of other problems which none of us liked.
When I don’t know the answers myself, I’m very quick to get another Linden informed — you mentioned Robin and Cory. Since I look up to both of them so much, I’ve been communicating a lot of the community heat and woes directly to Robin, suggesting what we need to do *fast* to improve, and I informed Cory that there’s a lot of craving for technical issues… which is why he’s having a Technical Town Hall soon. Clearly, this is important. I updated the Widget on the Official Linden Blog to emphasize this on the right.
I sure do enjoy figures of speech, and I was teased, many times as a child about it. Not “teased” as in “ha-ha!”, but “teased” as in “make your every day a living hell”. People talk differently; not everyone says the same thing the same way. Please take that into consideration.
LOLEX = my own way of saying “LOL”, I’ve never said that in reference to painful issues. That’s disrespectful. Why do I say “LOLEX”? Because my Dad died a few years ago, and he spoke English with an accent. He said “ROLEX” as “LOLEX” and in referring to that symbol of material wealth (which is all he could relate to because he grew up a peasant), hoped I would make him proud one day. I’m not saying this for sympathy, but to fill in the rest of the story.
“Rice farmering” is nothing unusual, it just means there’s a lot of info (like grains of rice) to be gathered, not unlike the expression, “Putting together pieces of the puzzle”. If you don’t know, you can feel free to ask me — as you alluded to yourself, we’ve had friendly times inworld.
Every time you or someone has written something like this about me (and often, they’re prefaced by “I don’t have anything against Torley as a person…”, yet go on to make such sharp stabs), the negativity eats away at Second Life. I do my job the most professionally I can, but like you, I am a human being.
If you were earnestly concerned about me and wanted me to get better, you could have let me know in private, it’s a lot more good-hearted than self-admittedly bashing me out here on your blog.
And my Asperger’s Syndrome? Would I be treated differently if you, or anyone didn’t know? Yes, but I’ve chosen to be myself. That’s all I can be. And I came to be who I am in the last couple of years, largely because of the treasures of Second Life. Please don’t depict Asperger’s as being inhibitive to my social functioning either, because you know it: in Second Life, I’m the very archetype of a socializer.
It wasn’t always that way. But things change, and through SL itself, I grew.
If there’s something I hate, it’s the act of making assumptions about me which lead to misunderstanding, when I’ve provided plenty of clarification on my own — including on my personal blog — and am happy to provide more details, just like I am now.
To what j-wu said, I can’t quantify what makes my curiosity and enthusiasm genuine, but I know I’ve continued to be here because I see a lot of beauty. I said things like “I am passionate and enthusiastic: I care because you do.” back in ‘04 too.
Simone exactly hits why I continue to be bold — if I didn’t give a damn, I could do a substandard job. I could update the blog a lot less. (I got up many times in the middle of the night last week to check on The Grid.) I could clam up and not communicate. And if you don’t care for my style — this is why we have a diversity of Lindens, and the Community Team itself is a warm mix of personalities.
Time and time again, the serious critiques I make go missed, or undermentioned. People latch onto what’s easy to recognize — the watermelons — for good or bad. But saying that’s all I am is like saying the color green, or pink for that matter, constitutes the entire rainbow. It does not. That’s viewing a splinter of the whole Torley, which is *precisely* why I say “multiple viewpoints inside one person”, because I see things the way others do. I relate. The world is a big place, with many cultures, some of them unique to SL. Prejudice and fear are borne out of ignorance: I want to be open and welcoming.
But I’ll never understand why there’s so much cruelty in this world. People who claim they’re my friends bash me on Second Citizen, while others who I thought would stand up for me — I’ve certainly defended them, nevermind helped advocate what they want in their future Second Life — stand idly by, like some sick Kitty Genovese plague of inaction.
As much as some folks like forum drama, it’s junk food. A quick fix, then you feel the pangs in your tummy, and in the end, it leaves you feeling empty. What people thrive on in the long-term is the nutrition of healthy relationships, founded upon mutual respect — which doesn’t mean 100% agreement, but to treat each other courteously with civility — and beyond this, there’s friendship, there’s love.
Through Second Life, I’ve learned a lot about humankind, and at times, the unfortunate lack of it.
So despite all the crap, I keep going. Why? Because I believe in the good in humans, even those who repeat the same mistakes over and over, and do unkind things unto others. I believe we’re sitting on a gold, if not platinum mine of potential, of self-discovery and enlightenment. Not in some lofty, hoity-toity “I SAW BUDDHA AND HE HAD A POSSE!” way, but feeling secure and confident in your life, despite all the “shit’s fucked” that happens.
I just wanted to share… so there can be no ambiguity.
^ That emoticon represents the smile on my face — I am a happy person because being unhappy sucks! I ponder what our lives would be like if everyone reading this was more happy than I am.

I had thought about leaving a comment myself – but decided that feeding negativity with more negativity just wouldn't be serving any purpose.
I will say that I most likely couldn't have said it better than you did yourself omgwtfbbq!
Really though – this is just another lesson in the continuous cycle called life in which we all learn from daily. Just remember all his comments any time you hear a Second Cast episode and hear him say 'omgwtfbbq' (as he's done a few times in the past.)

Haterz will be haterz… we're just seeing a lot more of them lately.
I love your posts and your style. Please don't change a thing. It's what makes you and Linden Lab uniquely great. Keep it real.
Words mean things, and I enjoy all your words. I admire you, your dedication, your passion, your sense of humor and your true and honest interest in the betterment of Second Life and of all humanity as a whole. AAAnnnnd you really make me smile a whole lot…AAAnnnnnd you are really smart…..Aaaannnnd you are honest and respectful of people…..AAAnnnnnnd I love the music you create….AAanannnnnd you are the most incredible man I have known….Aaaannnnnd those are just the tip of the iceberg of reason why I love you.
Non illegitimi carborundum, Torley. Non illegitimi carborundum.
Know that, for every person who chooses to bash you–and, I'm sure, for every person who, like me, leaves you a comment to support you–there are probably a dozen, or more, who appreciate what you do, but don't choose to speak up about it, for whatever reason.
You have tremendous gifts…you are tied into a spirit that very few people can even dimly grasp, let alone fully comprehend. Your sheer love for SL stands head and shoulders above the crowd, and you, unlike most people, were afforded the opportunity to express your love for SL by serving alongside its creators. Sadly, some people express their general frustration at LL by using you as a focal point. These people are energy sinks, where you are an energy source. They aren't capable of contributing to the future of SL the way you are; all they can do is try to drag you and others down. Stand fast against them. Resistance is NOT futile.
If any of what I've said helps inspire you here, O Queen of Watermelons, consider it a partial repayment for all the inspiration with which you have gifted me and others.
I like your posts
They're full of humanity and passion. It gives me more boost than my morning coffee.

I do not represent a company servicing two million customers. Secondcast is meant to entertain, not inform.
I've posted a reply to the reply on my blog. Let's see how meta we gets.
Sometimes people in pain strike out at others. Who hasn't snapped at someone they love at the end of a hard day? Lordfly, like so many people, is having a tough time using Second Life and his post is a symptom of that pain. It's also a signal that he needs to work on his anger management skills, stop making excuses about being plain spoken, and recognize the difference between truth and misdirected anger. But, it's always easier to point out what other people need to do than to change ourselves, no?
On the other hand, the bogus marketspeak of most company representatives has numbed us to the point that when someone like Torley comes along and presents a quirky, human voice then we're shocked. The context of corporate communications just doesn't support that sort of personal exposure because it's emotionally exhausting for the spokesman. For the rest of us, it feels less like a personal violation when a faceless corporate drone tells us that we should enjoy the pain we've bought. When an actual person tells us we're screwed then we believe him, and that makes us angry.
Good luck, Torley. I don't envy your position.
This is my favorite quote ever about LL ( thank you Gywneth )
****
Linden Lab is lead by visionaries, not by business people. They want to create something unique, something that has never been tried before. And for that you need stubbornness — not greed. Being a visionary in the post-bubble days is something very hard to be! But still they struggle along.
****
I have seen the ISP/Webhosting industry loose it's hacker and geek roots, and now become the money machines for the suits. They were started by visionaries as well. Full of bright, weird, strange people, but always pushing ahead with what they thought they could do.
I have always seen Torley as one of these people, not because they do it for the money, but because they love what they are doing, and it's fun, and it's being the furture closer.
I remember when the web was cutting edge, I remember using Gopher, and ARCHIE the days when Unis where sticking TCP/IP stacks in everything with a power cord, the internet was not just a tool that business people use to get email and their porn fix.
I always make fun of King Phillips codpiece ( MY EYES!!!! ARGGH! ) but what he and LL is doing, is not just bleeding edge, but almost a Manhatton Project style of software build.
SL is a risky place to put your livelyhood, and the world has become a very risk adverse place. Full of SLAs, and compensation for stupid people who spill hot coffee on themselves, or don't look when they cross the street and get hit by a car. So you have to be prepared to lose a lot, but then it might be full of rich financial rewards. But I won't put my pension scheme on it.
SL to me, is a place to have fun. It's about people, and Torley is one of those visionaries who go and make it fun.
OK, his vision is about watermelons, no ones perfect
but I would rather talk to him then the usual scriptmonkey you get these days when calling anyplace for help
"I do not represent a company servicing two million customers." – LF
So, LF, you saying that your boss Reuben would be peachy keen reading your comments?
Dear Torley,
You're the best. You've created a beautifully worded response to what I can only describe as a very misguided rant by Lordfly; a rant without class or factual basis, by someone who I really think ought to know better.
By creating such a response, and not backing down in any way from who you are, you have again shown your truly wonderful character to all of us who appreciate your openness, integrity, and enthusiasm.
Much respect,
Simone Something
ps. Hiro Pendragon – beautifully noticed and pointed out!!!
Torley – you've got more supporters than you have haters. I love reading your posts and appreciate all your dedication to the SL community. I wish there were more Lindens like you to be honest.
The thing that cracks me up about blog attacks against SL or a specific Linden is that there appears to be such a sense of entitlement that goes along with having been around to see the early days…or that because one is trying to work in SL, WHY SHOULD THEY BE INCONVENIENCED??? Oh I know what will help, railing against a perfectly lovely human being because they are sooooooo very angry about how they can't work properly. It's pathetic and inhuman.
We all get frustrated and disappointed in SL and its performance. We all know it's been poor of late. But viciously attacking another human in what they know to be a blog that is read by many because they're having anger management issues is a brutal approach to dealing with disappointments.
Keep up the great work, Torley
So, LF, you saying that your boss Reuben would be peachy keen reading your comments?
Does my blog suddenly represent Millionsofus? Last I checked, it didn't. If I posted these things on MoU's blog, your argument would make sense.
Does your Myspace, blog, and emails represent the views and expressions of your employer, Hiro? Are you Corporately Approved ™?
I think the real question we need to ask ourselves at this time is: who really cares anymore? O_o
I mean, hey – you dont like Torley, and fair enough – not everyone likes everyone, and youre welcome to your own opinions. However, the immature "lets pick on the different one" approach to voicing your concerns is what really berates your seriousness of it all.
If you had presented it in a logical, well thought about presentation, rather than a "zomg i liek hatz teh torleezz cause he retrded", then I dont think this would have blown up into as much of a situation as it is. Admittedly, you did raise some legitimate personal concerns (like, Torley Linden vs the old torley Torgeson), but whatever constructive critisism and feedback you couldve provided was overlooked about the "I appreciate his enthusiasm, but you shouldn’t be sticking someone with a social disorder (Asperger’s) in center stage to answer/field 1.6 million residents (sorry, LOLEX RESIS RICE FARMERERERERS)" mark. Pity.
Personally, I dont know if there was any serious deliberate negativity in your comments, nor am I sure if you did mean any harm – however I know Torley well enough that he isnt upset about this. In fact, if anything, its just like saying "free publicity is good publicity". Those that dont know about/werent as interested in/werent as annoyed by torleys small quirky and fun comments, are probably looking more into it now.
I think we've all said enough about the situation now. The back and forths should stop here. There would be no gain from everyone continuing to trade insults and slanders, you wont move forward, or impress people. To the rest of us that are sitting back watching (eating popcorn, sushi or watermelons as they may be), you would only serve to illustrate yourselves to be school kids bitching about something unimportant and with no clear win, but each too proud to back down first.
(Comment #14. My lucky number. And I get the pink!)
Thank you graciously to each of you for taking the time to leave comments, specifically the encouragement + where I learned something new — it's how I started my Second Life, and how I continue to live it. A lot of my traits, and my sayings, didn't come first with me. I may have had a place in popularizing them, but at my heart, I believe it's *totally* unfair to give me credit not deserved, nor to place too much mention on me… simply because I've always been a single player (as in the Shakespeare, not the gangsta rap def.) in a much, much bigger ensemble cast.
None of my blessings would have blossomed if it weren't for Second Life. The seeds were there, but I had no place to put them. An observation I've made recently is that there's too much selfish entitlement a la "YOUR WORLD." and too little social sharing of "YOUR IMAGINATION." But I've seen good things time and time again: for the passionate and persistent, Second Life can help you turn your flights of fancy into substantial, tangible steps toward achieving your goals. I continue to live by this, with a goal of mine for humanity is that happiness will be more abundant.
And often, if someone asks me, "Why don't you behave like this/do this?", it's because I've done it before and found it to be lacking, like discarding the "bad notes" whilst refining The Goldberg Variations… performed across a spectrum of personality.
Unto this, my life is an experiment in joy.
(I used to have a secret wish that being a Linden would make me more anonymous and place me in the background, behind-the-scenes. Clearly because of the wishes of fellow Resis and Lindens alike, that did not happen: dare I say it is one of my more beloved failures.)
