Aggregate my ass: finding infopeace amidst the volume
Posted on: November 22, 2006Gosh, I love Macintosh font antialiasing. Looks so much creamier and crisp compared to Microsoft ClearType. I just ran back here to my PC from my Mac laptop, and I'm throroughly (convinced) again. Y'see, I had to do it because I'm compiling my aggregators — ways to get a top-down overview of the plethora of infosources I either oversee or casually dip into.
As I mentioned earlier, I got CoComment as a Firefox add-on to keep track of comments I make across numerous blogs. It ain't perfect: it doesn't appear to keep track of forums, or some blogs like my fave Lifehacker, but for what it has done thus far, it's worked pretty well. I prefer it to "the old way", which was bookmarking numerous pages into a folder then checking them regularly. I still need to do that for pages currently incompatible with CoComment… anyone know a better way?
On the SLogosphere (Second Life + blogosphere) front, I've used Tao Takashi's World of SL, which has a fashion counterpart too. I have the feed loaded into my Bloglines, where I have it set to "Titles" view. It simply shows me the headlines and preloads the rest of the feed: if I see something that captivates me, I can easily expand it.
Speaking of, that's exactly why I found "How To Write Great Headlines" @ Modern Life is Rubbish to be so compelling. (Their design gorgeous, their content gemful!) My headlines didn't use to be so descriptive, and tended to be extremely abstract. (Sometimes, I wish I could embed pictures, or at least pictographs, as part of a title!) But now, I'm learning this punchiness: it's also of use when formatting tidbits for Clipmarks! I've come to believe being able to condense articles when crunched for time is an essential skill. Especially when I've got hundreds of emails to read in a day, it's the classy haiku that win out!
Back to World of SL for a bit: it's gotten to the point where it's crowded with secondlife@del.icio.us and blogHUD posts. There's no way to filter those to a separate area (I prefer to check blogHUD's own page for latest entries) yet, but I've suggested it to Tao, because I keep slicing digested info in half, and lo and behold, as the world grows, so do these heaps of data.
Instead of doing the futile and trying to keep up with everything, I've become increasingly selective in trusting what's right for me to know. I erased a lot of bookmarks which I used to visit but weren't giving me ample value in return; perhaps as things gets spread further out with Second Life, it's a tasty irony I become more focused.
Someone should start a Second Life equivalent to HappyNews.com. Not
in denial of the harshness out there (that response is merely sour and redundant), but because someone will always report that anyway — but because it puts life, and Second Life, back in the balance. It's like wheat germ for your avatar diet.
I used to keep a closer watch on the Google News matches for "'second life' 'linden'", but there's too many syndicated duplicates now for that to be eminently useful — wish it could bundle up like articles and leave the fresh stuff. Plus, as I've alluded to numerous times before, there's not a lot of "big news" stories that interest me. They're well-covered and I get them in copious doses at work. So during my personal time, I head in pursuit of the "side alleys" of Second Life, things which don't get a lot of attention, but are of eclectic interest intrigue to me — and hopefully to you too!

I want font smoothing on my LINUX!
Agregating rss is something that I love, but for now I am using Google Reader and BLoglines, both are quick and do the work

I tried Google Reader too and it has some nice features, but overall I prefer the structure of Bloglines more. Which is a bit surprising because usually, I'm not all that fond of frames on websites, but Bloglines works well for me.
