Anatomy of a Blog Move - Part VII

Posted on: October 30, 2006

My, this is getting epique, isn't it?

On Blog-City, I didn't have the ability to page back through previous entries. This caused some serious discontinuity, so I resorted to showing masses of posts on the front page — at times, up to 32. This resulted not only in frustration, but in slow blog loading time and exhausted scroll wheels, and was unpleasant to my gentle readers. Thankfully, I no longer have to do that — WordPress has highly functional « Previous Entries links!

Weighing the scales, I'm currently only showing 5 posts on my blog's front page, with an extra 5 more displayed in the Recent Posts widget on the left sidebar, for a subtotal of 10, with many more accessible using the Categories widget, searching, etc. I also downloaded the entire contents of my front page, and it ended up being a grand total of 260 KB. That number will of course fluctuate depending on the exact contents, and snapshots will make that spike up, but it's an acceptable sum, especially considering the rising popularity of broadband, and the additional muscle Second Life requires (a bandwidth of at least 768 kbps is recommended to be inworld with music playing). So if you're here, whether you're already a Resi(dent) or going to be one, I'm expecting you to have a reasonably powerful computer. And if not, lemme know how to improve the Torley experience. :)

After a stretch of time, I hope I'll see my new permalinks show up in Google. It's still showing the old ones, yucky broken links! Wish I knew how to translate. Hrmmm… maybe I should customize my 404 error page so those in search of me don't get lost.

This entry was typed using Google Docs and copied-and-pasted into the WP-Admin, since posting from WordPress is broken. See this.

I go away for like, two weeks, and look what happens around here…

But hooray to no more wiki-type formatting stuffs!! =D

    Oh, and hi Torley! =)

Play with <!-- more --> and <!--nextpage-->. They will help you lower the page weight :-D

I should probably use it more often, but you can get an idea of how much bigger the front page would be if I didn't use them at all.

    gah. Forgot the linky linky.

  4. Aster Says:

You moved?! That would explain the lack of Torley-ness in my google reader. 0.o

  5. Torley Says:

@Aster: Yes I hath moved. But wait! Which feed URI are you subscribing to? You should be using http:///feeds.feedburner.com/torley — in any case, I've installed a plugin so this blog automatically fowards any of WordPress's own RSS addresses to the FeedBurner one.

@Marv: I'm playin'! Oooh code tags, hrmmm I should play with those too.

@Nanaki: Welcome back and hihi! Change is a-happenin'!
