I'll answer any & all questions I can. I'm providing this experimental space because since topical blog posts don't allow for such variety. 2 rules:

  1. Just about anything re: video tutorials, tips, tricks, 'n' how-tos is welcome! E.g., if you have a vidtut request.
  2. No questions about official Second Life stuff (stuff I can't help with). This is my personal blog.

If you prefer, send me a private message.

Go for it!

Sean 2008-10-25 at 6:36 PM UTC

could you make a tutorial about how to script a object to teleport you.

Paddy Wright 2008-10-28 at 3:20 PM UTC

Torley, get LL to communicate please! Jacks announcement is a disaster and you have pulled up the drawbridge.

Torley 2008-11-01 at 11:22 AM UTC

@Sean: I may consider that! Yours is the first request I've heard. There are some good free and inexpensive teleport script gadgets which I recommend looking at, and you'll learn by examining the script and reading the docs.

@Paddy: I'm really sorry because my personal blog isn't about Linden policy (see #2 above), but at work, I've definitely been forwarding ALL the feedback I get and encouraging nothing less that timely, relevant, continual communication about that.

Paddy Wright 2008-11-02 at 3:13 AM UTC

Torley, Thank you. My previous post was written at a time when feelings in the community were running high. Since then there has been a modicum of debate filter out of LL. I fully appreciate you can't comment here and thank you for taking the time to reply.

Ooh, I had to read that two or three times. Loan1wolf, allow me to translate, you mean something like this?
You would buy an OpenSpace estate, but you find it too expensive. You think such high prices will drive people away from SL. And you think Torley is a cool Linden, he does a good job and he has fun doing it. Also, Torley is helpful.
When you have a child avatar on SL, people report you for it, while you are doing nothing wrong. Child avs in SL have a bad name due to bad stuff being done with them and you feel the consequences. You think we should show more there's nothing wrong with having a kid avatar, just as everybody can be a tiny or a furry or a robot if they so desire.

@Paddy: Thank *you* for understanding.

@Daed: Thanks for translating! False abuse reports get thrown out by Linden Lab's Governance Team. And like Jack Linden just said @ http://blog.secondlife.com , there'll be followup re: OpenSpaces.

Hi Torley!

Love your tutorials — they have been so helpful! I have a newbie kind of question (and I'm not a newbie…so too embarrassed to ask someone in-world.)

I have several freebie AO HUDs and loads of animations I've picked up as freebies along the way — but don't know how to get the animations I like into a HUD. Or even how to edit the ZHAO II I have to take out the one stand I really hate.

Anyway, without going into unnecessary details about my failed attempts — maybe I'm trying to edit a HUD that isn't editable(?)– have you made, or would you consider making, a tutorial that shows step-by-step how to load/edit an HUD?

My current solution is to set the ZHAO on 0 for the stand time, so it doesn't cycle through to the stand I hate. I'm kinda tired of hanging around with a static pose like a dork (I'd rather hang around like a dork with many poses.)

Thanks!

Torley 2008-11-07 at 3:19 PM UTC

@Cyn: Thanks for explaining and sharing — no embarrassment, it's better to be curious than quiet about it! ^^

I've thought about doing a how-to-AO video before, but with several popular brands out there, I thought the actual makers would be better-suited, and beat me to the punch. But some of the general principles are true in a variety of cases… it's a good idea…

What you describe sounds like a permissions subtlety, where editing is restricted while an object is attached. While not obvious, try dropping the HUD AO object on the ground, THEN open its contents and try to drag stuff in?

It may be related to this longtime confusion: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5710

Hi again, Torley!

Is there a way to edit a landmark in your inventory? I'd like to change the photo and description, but can't figure out how to do it.

Thanks!

Torley 2008-11-14 at 3:48 PM UTC

@maxpiut: Sure is fine, and welcome here!

@Des: No, alas, you can't do that. Photo and description are controlled by the parcel owner(s) — so if the place where the landmark was made gets a new description, you should see that reflected in the landmark.

I won an 10,000L contest at the vooodoo lounge & I was not paid. I tried to contact Lias Leandros all day yesterday about my prize $ & she completely ignored me. When I tried to go to the Voodoo Lounge & ask her about it she tried to freeze me & today she banned me from the Voodoo Lounge. I reported her to the Lindens. :] There are 2 other people who also won & they also were not paid. I had some people contact her because she has me on mute. She told them I wasn`t going to win anyway because I worked at the Voodoo Lounge. But before she announced that staff can`t enter I quit the week prior. She took the other staff members down but left me up. & STILL will not pay me. Is there a way where you can shut her club down or take the 10,000L that she owes each of us?

Thanks for reading,

Kristin Rexen

Hey Torely,
So My Question is….. When U have a Skin and Its Turn Two Tones Your Face Dont match the Rest Of your Body Skin Tone …How Do You Fix That?

Des 2008-11-19 at 7:01 PM UTC

Hey Torley,

I'm gonna keep asking questions until you either kick me out or shut down the thread!

Next up: I make a sign that is odd shaped and uses transparency. Works great….until you place it near another object that uses some transparency, such as a window frame.

And then the sign goes in and out, depending on where you move. So from one spot, it looks great, in another spot, it looks like it's outside a window (yet it's not), and from another spot, you can't see it at all.

The two objects using transparency seem to move forward and backward, so that the sign is in front one moment, and the window is in front the next. Hope this makes sense.

The only fix I've found so far is to make a sign that's a square shape and stop using fancy shapes.

Anything I'm missing?

AnnMarie Otoole 2008-11-19 at 7:41 PM UTC

Des, that is one of the oldest unsolved headaches in SL. I keep hearing that they are working on it but it is a difficult problem. Sometimes, depending on the situation, you can alleviate or eliminate the problem by interposing an opaque object between the two alpha objects. Otherwise, until it is solved, restrict use of shapes with alpha areas.

LilSexyDevil LadyBird 2008-11-20 at 3:54 AM UTC

And I Have Another Question…and Why when i Put say … a Footbase on My entire bottom half Turns white..or black?? How can I fix this??

Daedalus Young 2008-11-20 at 6:05 AM UTC

Des,
As AnnMarie said, it's a terrible problem. One good solution though is to use 1-bit transparency. This means you have a 256 colour indexed image, one colour can be completely transparent. So any diagonal transparency will have slightly jagged edges, but depending on the on-screen size, this may not be very noticeable. When using only square transparent cutouts, this technique is especially useful, as it eliminates the problem and results in smaller texture filesizes, which ultimately makes everybody happy.
How to do this with your image software, depends on what you use, usually there's some option to use indexed colours somewhere, needing some optimization (you only have 256 colours instead of the usual millions).

Torley 2008-11-22 at 9:42 AM UTC

A general reminder to please see #2 above, as I can't help with policy/support/bugs/etc. on my personal blog. If I DO know something useful I'll chime in, but don't count on it.

@LilSexyDevil: Have a picture? Sounds like the NVIDIA driver bug in https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7957 for which a fix is present in the 1.22 RC.

Thanks AnnMarie and Daedalus for helping. This problem is https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-27 which Daed also posted on before.

Peri Lorefield 2008-12-14 at 9:45 PM UTC

Hi Torley – great work!
Not so much a question as a suggestion…
I have great trouble with permissions – I have just finished mucking things up again, when I try to give objects to other AVs.
I don't fully comprehend the implication of the various permissions – and how the permissions of – objects within objects affect the permission behaviour of the whole.
And the way permissions change between inventory and rezzed object is a complete mystery to me.
Could you please produce an "Awesome" tutorial about permissions?
(or at least provide a pointer to a definitive guide)
I am sure that once ther is a Torly video on this subject – enlightenment will be assured :-)

AnnMarie Otoole 2008-12-14 at 10:10 PM UTC

Peri, Torly will probably wait until release 1.23 when this serious problem will have a nice solution. See https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5082.

Until then you have to check the permissions on every prim, every script every texture etc., which can be very tedious on a complex object. Even after checking everything the only way I know of testing is to give it to an alt so they can test the permissions.

Peri Lorefield 2008-12-14 at 10:27 PM UTC

AnnMarie, Thanks for the tip.
Well, I can see that a "bulk update" facility would be a boon (in R 1.23) – I would like to just get permissions right even when done by hand :-)
My problem is understanding the implications of copy/mod/transfer (which seem to be straightforward) and how the c/m/t settings of the internal parts interact with the whole.
I feel that I don't have a proper "mental model" of how all this works – and thus an "Awesome" tutorial would be a great help…

Daedalus Young 2008-12-15 at 12:05 PM UTC

Check out Ayumi Cassini's article about permissions. Look for the one titled "Copy, modify, transfer… velocity?"

Peri Lorefield 2008-12-15 at 5:34 PM UTC

Daedalus, thankyou so much for this link – it is exactly what I needed – and now I understand.
The crucial point is that permissions are only applied upon rez and ownership transfer – this was the gap in my understanding!

AnnMarie, thankyou for your suggestion – I have made an alt and will be doing a bit of experimentation to get this all sorted once and for all.

Torley 2008-12-17 at 11:24 AM UTC

@ChrisMignon: I wish I could speak better French! I sometimes wear furry avatars in my video, but pardon, I don't have time presently to make the video you request.

@Peri: Have you seen what's in our Knowledge Base @ http://secondlife.com/kb Some of it could be updated with more AWESOME style, so I'll let fellow members of our Documentation Team know as we continue to revise articles. Some permissions stuff (like granting to a friend, which I did a video for) is well-suited for a video, other stuff needs a neat chart.

Glad that article could help ya, if you have specific questions about what else doesn't make sense to you, please say so. I agree some aspects are unintuitive.

@AnnMarie: Thanks for calling that out. There've been some great "featurettes" lately; subtle features which make a tremendous difference.

I've gotta send Ayumi's guides around again, those rock. Thanks Daed. =D

Peri Lorefield 2008-12-17 at 9:52 PM UTC

Torley (and everyone else), thankyou for the feedback. Yes, all issues are dealt with in detail within the KB (but maybe not all together) – I must have just been having a bad day when I made my original post :-)
The crucial point I was missing is that perms for containers and their contents don't get correctly set until the object is rezzed – this can lead to some unexpected :-( effects when perms are changed in inventory prior to transfer.
Torley – I love the videos – every time I watch one I learn something. You are awesome!

Ayumi Cassini 2008-12-26 at 12:47 PM UTC

I'm glad I could help with that permission article :) This issue is not talked about too often, however I think it's very important for every content creator in SL. So I'm hoping my little guide will help others understand permissions better.

Thank you Torley and Daed for spreading the word about my articles ^^

Torley 2008-12-27 at 9:17 AM UTC

@Ayumi: Your guide is one-of-a-kind (well, until you make more of them and/or get shamelessly copycatted ;) ) and beautiful. One of the best I've seen. I really hope you'll make more — and please let me know if you do!

AnnMarie Otoole 2009-01-04 at 11:59 PM UTC

Hey, Torley, Do you have a tip for subdividing land when it is under water and you can't see the "Select" lines (apart from doing smaller pieces and then joining them later).

And another problem is working on large areas where you can't fit the land in the screen while still seeing the selection range.

Torley 2009-01-05 at 3:41 PM UTC

@Clemens: Where have you already searched? Have you seen Natalia Zelmanov's fab guide?

@AnnMarie: In those cases, I've hid the water. Advanced menu > Rendering > Types > Water OFF.

And for large areas, Advanced menu > Disable Camera Constraints and increase draw distance. AND maybe, View menu > Zoom Out several times. But doing too much of that badly distorts perspective.

Mr Waffle 2009-01-24 at 2:05 PM UTC

Just a brief short flash I had go through my mind, seeing as how much newbies ask about "What is SL all about, what can I do here"
I thought maybe an introduction video should be part of the subscription process, also many many many newbies don't even notice all the signs in the welcome areas, as they walk right past them… Thus often they do not know about the video tutorials… This should be brought to their attention in a more direct way, a way they can't miss.

:)

Gonzo Alderson 2009-01-29 at 10:36 AM UTC

Hi Torley
I have watched the media tutorials and can now stream music to my Parcel. I was wondering if you could add one that shows how I can stream music from my PC as a DJ. I could ask one or two friends in SL but it would take up a lot of chat time and a video would make it easier to see the correct steps to take. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere.

Torley 2009-01-31 at 7:56 AM UTC

@Mr Waffle: Indeed, this is always an utmost concern. I'm on Linden Lab's Documentation Team and working on better ways to make vidtuts & other helpful instructions (e.g., a slick starter guide) available at startup. It's too bad we can't yet play Flash video seamlessly in SL — that would allow video-sharing MUCH easier. I've been keeping tabs on any progress made, you can bet I'm so eager about it.

@Gonzo: That's something that could use an easier guide. I was going to make a video tutorial on that but ran into router problems. This was some time ago so I may try again, but it's reliant on 3rd-party software. In the meantime, please see: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Streaming_Music

Gonzo Alderson 2009-02-01 at 10:24 AM UTC

Thanks Torley I will check it out. Would be great if you can get a video tutorial working as well. :)

AnnMarie Otoole 2009-08-09 at 1:09 PM UTC

Dear Mr. Torley,

Is there a way to show your video tutorials on a media screen in SL? I keep getting the whole URL page with no access to the video. Can I extract the video file and save it on my own website so I can access it in SL? Youtube have the video URL coveniently buried so you can't access it directly.

Perhaps you have a site that will stream your videos directly or can you supply the video files for saving on my own website for delivery to SL?

Torley 2009-08-17 at 7:59 AM UTC

@AnnMarie I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier! I should close this thread as it's old now, but DID want to answer: YouTube's MP4 support is iffy but I DO have pretty-stable Second Life Video Tutorials URLs that will work. Try the ones in http://torley.com/files/vidtuts/ or precede a tutorial name there with http://vidtuts.s3.amazonaws.com/ (which isn't browsable, but is more robust). Hope this helps and if you have followup questions, reach me at http://torley.com/contactsl :D
