Ask Torley questions! Open thread!
Posted on: October 10, 2008I'll answer any & all questions I can. I'm providing this experimental space because since topical blog posts don't allow for such variety. 2 rules:
- Just about anything re: video tutorials, tips, tricks, 'n' how-tos is welcome! E.g., if you have a vidtut request.
- No questions about official Linden policy (stuff I can't help with). This is my personal blog.
If you prefer, send me a private message.
Go for it!

Hey Torley!
One of the most common questions I get from new users is "How do I make money in SL?" (In order to buy things like avatars and toys!)
Do you have a vidtut about this that I can point newbies to?
October 10th, 2008 at 7:40 PM PDT
Torley…
I've been in SL for a few months, and I find that I have a lot of fun helping out newbies. What inworld groups do you know of that would welcome a novice mentor?
October 10th, 2008 at 8:04 PM PDT
Ooh! First up…
@Bunny: That's without question one of the most popular questions I've ever been asked, too! Many correct answers from all walks of (Second) life, too. It's not the kind of thing that can be covered in a single video tutorial, but we do have a Knowledge Base article here:
It hasn't been updated in awhile, and what I'm hoping to see are awesome volunteers who'll refresh and expand:
I might end up doing it myself if no one else steps in.
Also, I often come across new Residents who don't know about the LindeX yet, and they'd be more than happy to exchange US$ (or other local currency) for Linden Dollars.
My advice is to not get a job in SL solely for profit, but for experience — which includes making new friends, and the adventures along the way. (In some respects, that's not unlike getting a job in your teens.)
@Jeff: Glad to hear it! Two that come to mind are NCI (New Citizens, Incorporated) and The Shelter, both of which have a long and very helpy history in Second Life. Infact, I was just chatting with some new mentors who got involved with them the other day. You'll also want to see:
I know our Volunteer Team ( http://vteamblog.com ) is also expanding to recognize help groups beyond the official Second Life Mentors.
Hope this, ah, helps!
October 10th, 2008 at 8:14 PM PDT
It helps greatly, Torley. You're an invaluable citizen of both worlds. Thanks.
October 11th, 2008 at 10:12 AM PDT
What's a good camcorder under $500? I'm thinking of picking one up to do some (real life) how-to videos for a little extra cash.
October 11th, 2008 at 11:15 AM PDT
@Jeff: You're so welcome! I like that, "citizen of both worlds".
@Gigs: This is one area I need a LOT more experience with; I have webcams but not camcorders. I hear a lot of rave reviews about the Flip series (incl. the new Mino). Quality isn't the crispest but it's optimal for uploading to YouTube or another video site. I haven't used one (but have been thinking of getting one, tho).
October 11th, 2008 at 1:14 PM PDT
Which books do I absolutely need to buy? I know you're a Philip K. Dick fan, which of his books should be in every bookcase in the world?
October 11th, 2008 at 2:22 PM PDT
@Daedalus: I could answer that with more certainty if I knew what you recently enjoyed reading and what you seek to learn!
Without a doubt re: PKD, especially for a PKD newcomer, I'd have to recommend The Philip K. Dick Reader as an introduction to his short stories. His usual flavor of themes is well-covered here:
For full novels, there's the 2 Library of America compilations which are a fine value for what's inside.
October 11th, 2008 at 6:21 PM PDT
Thanks Torley, I'll sure get the Reader. What I've recently enjoyed, lots of things. From Homer's Odyssey to several Asimov stories. But also books in Dutch, like from the Belgium writer Herman Brusselmans. On my wishlist I curently have Timeline by Michael Crichton and novels by Stephen Hawking.
Now I hope a) all my links won't get recognized as spam
and b) I haven't messed up the html.

Are you interested in national politics ? If so, what do you think of our presidential candidates?
October 12th, 2008 at 6:43 AM PDT
Greetis T! Thanks for a great website and many good tips and tutorials!
I am working a bit with creating my own sound/animation effects and have ran into a problem with Audacity. Sometimes I have files that aren't 16-bit/44.1kHz/mono or stereo. I have tried to encode/decode these files, but it doesn't seem to work. SL says that the file is in wrong format (kHz). How can I convert these files to work in SL?
Thanks!
October 12th, 2008 at 9:22 AM PDT
@Daed: Looks fine to me!
@Razrcut: I am, but not to a great degree because I believe there is too much hurtful WORDS WORDS WORDS crapslinging and not enough earnest action "in the system"; my political exposure mainly comes by way of comedy like SNL and The Daily Show. And it is through such absurdity that we learn what the really profound truths are. On candidates present and previous, I have the most admiration for Ron Paul. He is a canny guy who points out the folly of a limited, bipartisan system. I really adore how social media-savvy some Obama supporters have been, e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TiQCJXpbKg
It's just too bad we don't have time travel (a la Heroes) to see what kind of CHANGE will actually happen. Belief is not enough.
@Lertes: Greetis! You're welcome! The good news is, Audacity can convert them. Each Audio Track has a downward-pointing arrow you can click to change settings. There's also http://www.voxengo.com/product/r8brain/ if you desire a specialized tool — I like it a lot.
October 12th, 2008 at 11:33 AM PDT
Hi Torley,
Thanks for all your helpful tutorials!!!
Is there a way to hold a meeting/chat in SL and also have a simultaneous web-based chat of some kind?
Some of these folks are already on SL, but some aren't and might have older computers or are intimidated by it. So I'd love to be able to move the chats to SL for those who want to be there, while maintaining the traditional web method for everyone else.
Is this possible?

October 12th, 2008 at 6:37 PM PDT
@Des: You're most welcome! Yes, I've seen several means to achieve this, not limited to the web but other "lighter" protocols. For example, some people have bridged IRC and Second Life with relays. Worth searching for more info on that…
AjaxLife @ http://ajaxlife.net/ is a way you can login via the web. Been awhile since I personally used it, but it's a spark of brilliance. Keep in mind that this is an unofficial viewer and if you're concerned about security, use a different account (with a different password).
Also coming up, the SLim lightweight client may be applicable: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/09/03/connecting-second-life-to-real-life/
There are likely other engineering feats I haven't mentioned here, and if anyone reading this would like to help Des, it's appreciated. ^_^

Dear Torley,
It's my birthday on the 8th of November, and i would reallyreallyreallyreally love a pair of stripey green and pink socks. I'm sure you sent me a pair for my rez-day, but they must have just got lost in the post…
..I've been a very good avatar this year, and my friends said you don't exist, but i know you do!!
I left you some sculptie cookies by the door cos i know you like them, and a carrot for your reindeer..
lots and lots of love Suite
October 13th, 2008 at 3:33 PM PDT
Torley,
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! These are the kinds of thing I was hoping were out there. I already tried out the ajax, and that's perfect. I'm looking forward to trying out the other when it's rolled out.
You rock!
October 14th, 2008 at 9:40 AM PDT
Hey, I've got another question. I've searched and searched (maybe using the wrong search terms) and haven't found a way.
Is there a way to simply log off SL without having to shut it down? I may want to log off for an hour, but not have to restart the game. All I know to do is "Quit."
BTW, I'm less than a week old. LOL. So be kind if it's obvious.

Hey Torley,
will we ever be able to see moon phases in Windlight?…
I love the moon at night in-world, but I noticed that its always full. Would it be possible to create settings where we can show the moon (or even more than one moon, for sci-fi sims)in various phases like like half full or quarter full?…
October 14th, 2008 at 4:18 PM PDT
@Suite: I seem to recall answering this by email before? Did you see it, or am I mistaken?
In any case, I do wisheth you a MOST HAPPY BDAY!
@Des: Wicked. ROCK ON! As for your other Q, no, not currently. Apparently, it's much harder to do that than it seems (I checked with our engineers awhile ago).
@Dex: Hehe — http://torley.com/a-question-i-cant-answer-most-of-the-time
But seriously from what I learned from our WindLight gurus last year, yes, a better moon with phases is technically possible, but we haven't done it yet. No ETA on that, but I SURE WOULD GET EXCITED. Seeing as how I have to fake a full moon right now ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwbbjXVPfUo )
October 14th, 2008 at 4:31 PM PDT
Thanks for the camcorder ideas Torley. The flip series is actually pretty amazing quality considering the price! I might just get one of those. You are right, for uploading to a FLV site, you don't need super quality.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:18 PM PDT
Hi, Torley:
Is there a way for someone who doesn't have have an audio stream playing to know when it has stopped in their area? Can they get a notification that indicates this? I'm Deaf, but but spend some time in dance clubs with friends. I don't use the audio stream, of course, but it would be nice to get a visual indication that the music has stopped. Is this possible?
Thanks.
October 15th, 2008 at 12:58 AM PDT
Hello Torley,
I love your video tutorials and even after 2 years in SL still need to refer to them and I always refer others when they need answers.
I recently had several people ask me how they can find their 'chat history' and the first place I looked was your tutorials but I could not find anything, I also looked on the WIKI and found nothing so I published a short guide with screenshots. This could be a good subject for a tutorial.
October 15th, 2008 at 2:00 AM PDT
I noticed your interest in creating SL panoramas. Great information.
I have been doing the opposite. I've been taking high resolution RL panoramas and stitching them together in SL. In my labyrinth I have a (very nearly) 360 degree panorama with a resolution of about 7000×1024 and a number of full 360 degree at 4096×1024. They are very dramatic.
I can't yet afford the software for spherical to Mercator conversion but I have done a couple of spherical panoramas inside mega spheres.
(Did you get a chance to play with the Super Snooper? I end up using mine at least once a week to find lost prims/objects.)
October 15th, 2008 at 8:26 AM PDT
Torley! I need to make a mix tape for a road trip at Thanksgiving next month. Do you have a list of your current fave drum 'n bass or breakbeat tracks I can borrow?
October 15th, 2008 at 11:01 AM PDT
hello
i got a problem logging into Second Life what should i do ?
October 15th, 2008 at 2:10 PM PDT
@Gigs: Kewl!
@Arilynn: I don't know a way offhand — I wonder if this could be done with some open source coding, detecting the amplitude/energy of the media stream. We currently don't provide a way to display that (e.g., frequency bands and visualizers) like Winamp and iTunes do.
@dana: Do you mean chat logs? Or Communicate button > Local Chat tab? For the former, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O42SKhXesQo
@AnnMarie: Thx for the Super Snooper! I used it the other day to find a box I "lost". I like seeing virtual cubes of RL stuff in SL; wish there was an easier way to extrude "depth" tho. Kewl to hear what you've been doing!
@Wrath: Quivver's "Chasin' a Feeling" is nice, as is Sub Focus' "Join the Dots". Some of the Metal Gear Solid 4 soundtrack has pretty kewl breakbeat orchestral action. More housey but phat beats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSrg3qGXcQg
@Blitz: As mentioned above, sorry, I can't help with support issues! Please provide more details @ http://secondlife.com/support =)
October 15th, 2008 at 3:00 PM PDT
Anudder kweshun. I haz it.
On Feb 25 2008, on deviantART a user with the name torleytextures registered. This user stated 'Torley' as first name. He did not upload an avatar. Also did not upload anything else, did not write a journal entry or provide personal info (including things like 'favourite movie' or 'operating system'). This person only favourited two of my deviations, one Snapshot of Meta Linden sitting on your watermelon couch and one Snapshot of you at the Linden Dunk event. I left a comment on the userpage, thanking for the favs, and added the user to my watchlist, but haven't heard anything since. The user last logged in about 11 weeks ago, at which time he was a member for already 22 weeks.
Now the question: by any chance, is this really you?
October 15th, 2008 at 3:08 PM PDT
i went in the support and i contacted the Linden Lab staff but it didnt seem to do anything.
October 15th, 2008 at 10:12 PM PDT
Hi, I'm trying to learn some more in depth on making stuff for your avatars, I understand the ratios and everything you can learn at Ivory tower, asside from how your supposed to join to prims to make one object, instead of all of the prims being a new object, if you could, when your on, pm me back, cause I've been having some real problems, as for textures, sounds, collision sounds, and the like, I have no problem, but to make things move, like a tail wagging that I really want to learn to do, and how to do some other stuff, me and my bf are trying to start a business because I'm a computer graphics designer, and would really like to get in on this stuff.
October 16th, 2008 at 3:41 AM PDT
@Daed: That IS me! I haven't logged in awhile and didn't see your gracious messages earlier! Reason I took "torleytextures" is because "torley" was already taken (what are the odds…) I browse DeviantArt on occasion, looking for fanart/stylized versions of Second Life avatars.
@Roxas: I apologize I'm usually unable to IM back for personal conversations due to sheer lack of time. (My chronographs tend to get sucked into conceptual vortexes!)
I'll gladly point you to more resources: re: stuff like wagging tails, I'd look for *existing* examples inworld to see how they're made. There are some freebie ones that are basically flexiprims with some transparency/alpha (to make them look furry) — for a similar application, see my waving flag tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuBlYNcZdrg
A lot of my learning comes from using stuff made by amazing content creators and asking questions, then applying it hands-on to what I know. I recommend that process of observing-then-doing. =)

i got the prob i was reported by a guy because i didnt gave him Linden Dollars. So he taught i would gave him Lindens if he reported me,but i dont care about that the prob is my account got suspended till wednesday(yesterday) and i still cant reach it
October 16th, 2008 at 11:39 AM PDT
Blitz, you should be able to reach the Support Portal, click the Ticket Submission banner there. This way you can get in contact with people who can really help you with this and suspend or ban the other guy for scamming you.
Torley, I know how devART doesn't tell you when you have new comments on your userpage, so I understand you didn't see my message. Was just curious about it
October 16th, 2008 at 12:59 PM PDT
i made a ticket but i got no answer to it in my mail
October 16th, 2008 at 1:37 PM PDT
Hullo. I was wondering what your current recommendations are for getting the best quality final video for vidtuts out of Sony Vegas, since the Vidtut Process wiki page is a bit out of date.
Thanks!

(Currently undergoing awesomeness amplification.)
October 16th, 2008 at 3:44 PM PDT
@Wrath: OH! I definitely need to recommend TRIFONIC. They are SUPER-AWESOME and nice brothers!
Well-programmed breakz with LOTS of atmosphere, guitars, occasional vocals, and paired with deep basslines too. I plan to blog about them soon. Best thing, their album Emergence is for free, and if you like it, then you pay — they're big into Creative Commons and very forward-thinking AND doing!
@Kevin: I still use those specs! What's out-of-date is the process of uploading. I've since gravitated to Vimeo and blip.tv for best quality. I do plan to update the process, now that the new player @ http://secondlife.com/showcase/tutorials/ (need shorter URL) is up.
October 17th, 2008 at 5:20 AM PDT
Hi, first of, keep up da good work !
Wonder if you would take time and making
a webcam tutorial for windows, work-arounds for
ex using windows media encoder or likewise products
to able you stream your webcam from your own
computer without rely on other hosts. Cant seem to find any good tuts for windows on this anywhere.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:34 AM PDT
@fox: Thanx! I haven't really considered this yet — what do you mean by "rely on other hosts"? A 3rd-party like http://stickam.com/ ?
October 17th, 2008 at 3:24 PM PDT
To not push and go trough any other host to do it live,
for ex veodia.com, rather using your own software to be
the server, as if your streaming music trough shoutcast and winamp ect. Pre-recorded hosts are plenty, I myself started to use for ex blip.tv . So far I've not found any 3rd-party to acctualy do it live feed.
And all my trials with windows media coder have failed, cant seem to get a connection trough my parcel.
October 18th, 2008 at 6:43 AM PDT
@fox: I don't know an easy way to do that which really satisfies me. I've had some friends that used Darwin server, but just a few days ago, I found it VERY easy to use Xfire's Broadcast feature (powered by Dyyno) to stream Second Life without hassle: http://torley.com/xfire-best-free-game-video-recorder-yet

Hi Torley!
I have 2 questions - completely unrelated.
1) Have you done a Tut on animating an object - specifically I want to make a magic wand that my av will hold out, not just hold, and maybe wave about a bit. I learned how to put the easysit script into something so I could edit the sit. I imagine maybe theres similar steps in using an animation inside an object like a wand or umbrella?
2) My other question is about how to get communication going with a Linden - specifically Michael Linden of the Dept of Works. I'm not able to get to Office Hours (my boss wouldnt like me doing SL at work!!!) I have IM'd him and also the mole involved. The mole seems to have given up on the road outside my house. At the SW corner of Nemmers in Gaeta lies a half finished road with piles of dirt and some construction cones…but all activity ceased a month ago! I can see that there is an issue with the angle the road needs to be, but *sigh* its been like that for a while. Maybe IM's aren't working when the person is offline. I really don't like to nag, but I thought you might know how the Linden side of things worked and if there is someone else I can contact.
Thanks Torley - and I am loving your textures. Have become a bit of a watermelon color convert…
October 19th, 2008 at 4:57 PM PDT
Thanks Torley! I got it to work, now I look really neat!

Haha - yes AnnMarie it is kinda cute on one level…
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 AM PDT
@Sean: Wasn't a deliberate decision. Just is.
@feeli0:
(1) Haven't done a tutorial on that specifically yet, but it sounds like that has to do with animating your *avatar* with an attachment, than animating the attachment itself?
(2) While I need to generally disclaim I can't forward mail to various Lindens because there's too much, I understand the desire to make progress there. Sounds like you've already done the right thing in sending an IM. I'll give LDPW a heads-up about your situation and ask what should be done — I'll post followup here. Hee, mole.
@Roxas: Sweet!
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:08 AM PDT
Perhaps you and linden should consider working and team up with products such as stickam, ustream.tv , mogulus or perhaps seesmic.com , to have easy webcam stream into the world and be a seperate part just as your voicechat is. Still trying to get workarounds to able me stream my webcam into SL.
I mentioned seesmic because would think there api and idea for social media is perhaps more along side lindens than others, they at this moment dont have live feed, but an awsome social video-forum concept.
Hope linden will take webcam a bit more serious,
many is looking for simple solutions to it !

Hi, Torley,
I'm not even sure that I'm entering my question in the correct field. Sorry if I'm not.
One of your vidtuts explains how to use SL with multiple viewers. However, when I try to type in -multiple, it tells me that is not valid. I remember installing a new version of SL a month or so ago…I wonder if that is making a difference?
Thanks,
Mary

could you make a tutorial about how to script a object to teleport you.
October 28th, 2008 at 3:20 PM PDT
Torley, get LL to communicate please! Jacks announcement is a disaster and you have pulled up the drawbridge.
November 1st, 2008 at 11:22 AM PDT
@Sean: I may consider that! Yours is the first request I've heard. There are some good free and inexpensive teleport script gadgets which I recommend looking at, and you'll learn by examining the script and reading the docs.
@Paddy: I'm really sorry because my personal blog isn't about Linden policy (see #2 above), but at work, I've definitely been forwarding ALL the feedback I get and encouraging nothing less that timely, relevant, continual communication about that.
November 2nd, 2008 at 3:13 AM PST

November 2nd, 2008 at 8:03 AM PST
Ooh, I had to read that two or three times. Loan1wolf, allow me to translate, you mean something like this?
You would buy an OpenSpace estate, but you find it too expensive. You think such high prices will drive people away from SL. And you think Torley is a cool Linden, he does a good job and he has fun doing it. Also, Torley is helpful.
When you have a child avatar on SL, people report you for it, while you are doing nothing wrong. Child avs in SL have a bad name due to bad stuff being done with them and you feel the consequences. You think we should show more there's nothing wrong with having a kid avatar, just as everybody can be a tiny or a furry or a robot if they so desire.

@Paddy: Thank *you* for understanding.
@Daed: Thanks for translating! False abuse reports get thrown out by Linden Lab's Governance Team. And like Jack Linden just said @ http://blog.secondlife.com , there'll be followup re: OpenSpaces.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:52 PM PST
Hi Torley!
Love your tutorials — they have been so helpful! I have a newbie kind of question (and I'm not a newbie…so too embarrassed to ask someone in-world.)
I have several freebie AO HUDs and loads of animations I've picked up as freebies along the way — but don't know how to get the animations I like into a HUD. Or even how to edit the ZHAO II I have to take out the one stand I really hate.
Anyway, without going into unnecessary details about my failed attempts — maybe I'm trying to edit a HUD that isn't editable(?)– have you made, or would you consider making, a tutorial that shows step-by-step how to load/edit an HUD?
My current solution is to set the ZHAO on 0 for the stand time, so it doesn't cycle through to the stand I hate. I'm kinda tired of hanging around with a static pose like a dork (I'd rather hang around like a dork with many poses.)
Thanks!
November 7th, 2008 at 3:19 PM PST
@Cyn: Thanks for explaining and sharing — no embarrassment, it's better to be curious than quiet about it! ^^
I've thought about doing a how-to-AO video before, but with several popular brands out there, I thought the actual makers would be better-suited, and beat me to the punch. But some of the general principles are true in a variety of cases… it's a good idea…
What you describe sounds like a permissions subtlety, where editing is restricted while an object is attached. While not obvious, try dropping the HUD AO object on the ground, THEN open its contents and try to drag stuff in?
It may be related to this longtime confusion: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5710

Hi again, Torley!
Is there a way to edit a landmark in your inventory? I'd like to change the photo and description, but can't figure out how to do it.
Thanks!
November 14th, 2008 at 3:48 PM PST
@maxpiut: Sure is fine, and welcome here!
@Des: No, alas, you can't do that. Photo and description are controlled by the parcel owner(s) — so if the place where the landmark was made gets a new description, you should see that reflected in the landmark.

I won an 10,000L contest at the vooodoo lounge & I was not paid. I tried to contact Lias Leandros all day yesterday about my prize $ & she completely ignored me. When I tried to go to the Voodoo Lounge & ask her about it she tried to freeze me & today she banned me from the Voodoo Lounge. I reported her to the Lindens. :] There are 2 other people who also won & they also were not paid. I had some people contact her because she has me on mute. She told them I wasn`t going to win anyway because I worked at the Voodoo Lounge. But before she announced that staff can`t enter I quit the week prior. She took the other staff members down but left me up. & STILL will not pay me. Is there a way where you can shut her club down or take the 10,000L that she owes each of us?
Thanks for reading,
Kristin Rexen
& also here`s proof that i won

Hey Torely,
So My Question is….. When U have a Skin and Its Turn Two Tones Your Face Dont match the Rest Of your Body Skin Tone …How Do You Fix That?

Hey Torley,
I'm gonna keep asking questions until you either kick me out or shut down the thread!
Next up: I make a sign that is odd shaped and uses transparency. Works great….until you place it near another object that uses some transparency, such as a window frame.
And then the sign goes in and out, depending on where you move. So from one spot, it looks great, in another spot, it looks like it's outside a window (yet it's not), and from another spot, you can't see it at all.
The two objects using transparency seem to move forward and backward, so that the sign is in front one moment, and the window is in front the next. Hope this makes sense.
The only fix I've found so far is to make a sign that's a square shape and stop using fancy shapes.
Anything I'm missing?

Des, that is one of the oldest unsolved headaches in SL. I keep hearing that they are working on it but it is a difficult problem. Sometimes, depending on the situation, you can alleviate or eliminate the problem by interposing an opaque object between the two alpha objects. Otherwise, until it is solved, restrict use of shapes with alpha areas.

Des,
As AnnMarie said, it's a terrible problem. One good solution though is to use 1-bit transparency. This means you have a 256 colour indexed image, one colour can be completely transparent. So any diagonal transparency will have slightly jagged edges, but depending on the on-screen size, this may not be very noticeable. When using only square transparent cutouts, this technique is especially useful, as it eliminates the problem and results in smaller texture filesizes, which ultimately makes everybody happy.
How to do this with your image software, depends on what you use, usually there's some option to use indexed colours somewhere, needing some optimization (you only have 256 colours instead of the usual millions).

A general reminder to please see #2 above, as I can't help with policy/support/bugs/etc. on my personal blog. If I DO know something useful I'll chime in, but don't count on it.
@LilSexyDevil: Have a picture? Sounds like the NVIDIA driver bug in https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7957 for which a fix is present in the 1.22 RC.
Thanks AnnMarie and Daedalus for helping. This problem is https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-27 which Daed also posted on before.
