To clarify: my 'outfit kits' are shape, skin, base hair, prim hair, eyes, clothes, and animation overrider. Usually also wings, maybe other accessories.

I mostly make each outfit from component pieces on the day. I have a couple of outfit-kits, mostly they're for when I'm changing back from a tiny or a furry. (I teach at NCI Q&As, and 'what can you be in SL' is a common question.)

The easiest way to describe how I organise my avatar section of my inventory is probably to show you. So here's links to a couple of photographs.

Nightbird, thanx for followup. Feel free to link to screenshots if you've taken them too, it could help someone else out!

I just spent some time going over my inventory. The names I used above work for complete outfits, but for separates and accessories (shoes, jewelery, etc.) I decided to tag with a keyword that indicates the type of item it is. I used these tags in my folder names:

!TOP (As in blouses or tees. Or corsets. :D )
!JEWEL
!SHOES
!BOOTS
!LINGERIE

I don't own a lot of separates, and most of those are tees or shoes. Speaking of shoes, the no copy heels I mentioned in my first comment I decided to put in a tagged subfolder of the outfit I bought them for. So they are both part of an outfit yet accessible as separates from the inventory search bar.
