Beauty in strange lands
Posted on: May 30, 2007Damien Fate sent me his anthemic rendition of "watermelon skies" from the WindLight First Look viewer. Looks like a Saturday morning cartoon I would've wanted to grow up with (and who's to say I didn't?).
Solivar Scarborough's combined the best of WindLight + Sculpties, and delivered some Moa Moai madness to our gradiustic shores.
Gosh, I'm hoping come this weekend, I can sit back, relax, and enjoy these and more creations on my list of landmarks to visit!

Hi Torley,
just wanted to say that you can visit my place, and check out my items with the old viewer, because with windlight, about 50% of my about 6 or dozen items will be broken, so I will have to retexture them. Not to mention that they will be broken for the few thousand residents who own my items and spent from a few hundred to a few thousands of L for them.
Way to go! You will completely break every item that uses black + shiny or "dark texture" + shiny.
Oh and I can't post to JIRA because a bug keeps me from posting to JIRA - I can't even log in.
So I hope you FIX this, which I honestly doubt, since LL doesn't care for designers who devote thousands of USD and 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week to create something unique
Thanks for not listening to your user/customerbase and introducin more and more features that will break the game for most of us.
A far lower framerate, broken items, no way to contribute by posting such a "bug" to your broken by design tool called JIRA. I'm really looking forward to Windlight in the main client… really. It's gonna be so awesome. NOT.
I'm making a (very good) living in SL at the moment but I think I may be gone after the introduction of this and age verification.
I'd still like to talk to you but I honestly doubt I'll hear a response.
A very frustrated,

My second post got eaten by your database crash or by moderation - who cares, it's both unprofessional…
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I've been hired as a consultant to help a company bring their brand to SL. Yesterday was the kick off meeting. Their admin had no way of letting me connect to SL at first, then we couldn't find the ports SL uses or could get it to log in. Then teleports didn't work so I had to directly relog to the regions every time I wanted to tp somewhere.
Also on every second login, the client crashed.
Way to go. That's how you draw peoples attention to your product.
I mean I honestly think I can create something beautiful with them in SL and help them do it. But most of the time I will be wondering how to work around your bugs and get things to work and how to deal with everything you throw in my clients and my way.
It's disgusting - if my own business wouldn't work and if I wouldn'T know that because I've seen it with my own eyes, I would prolly close the client, delete SL and chuckle then turn to the next medium to work with.
And I didn't even get started on how Phillip acts like a dictator, how your communication via the blog sucks monkey balls and how your general approach to business is sucidal at best.
But please, give me more stuff like Windlight, Voice and Age verification. Please continue to ignore residents' concerns, appeals and outcries.
At the moment, there's no competition to SL. But the second someone comes up with a professional solution and offers exporters from SL formats to the new platform - people will be gone before you can even say "watermelon".

Gee…such negativity in the contents above. Let me offset that with a little positive energy, specifically some Windlight-powered images I took last night. Nothing fancy, I just explored the various preset options while camera'ing about the Compound and some other locations.
I do notice a difference in the quality of the light; in Default preset, it seems more…well, vibrant somehow than in the standard client. It threw me for a minute, but the effect is more pleasant than otherwise. And, using the "Coastal Sunset" preset (which I used for the first of the pictures above), I panned around to look at my avatar, and it looked like I was being illuminated by twilight. Danielle can testify, I was going nuts trying out various combinations to see how they looked. And yeah, the UI for it looks a bit klunky right now, but that's what "beta" is for, right?

The funny thing is Erbo - in one picture of yours (the one at Caledon Steamsky City) you can actually see a place I rent and wanted to turn into a Café. On a platform 200 meters above the ground so people can look at the sky and just talk.
I was actually looking forward to Windlight.
Actually, I was just building one of the most beautiful high prim Skypads and when I heard about Windlight I actually thought it would benefit from that.
So much for my "positive energy".

Wow, that sculptie is AMAZING! Torley, can you ask Solivar Scarborough wether I can have that Teen-Grid-ified? I won't use 'em for commercial and commerce purposes ;-).
(I'm also trying to get Chip Midnight's sculpties into the Teen Grid :-D)

@Juliet
Torley's also on the community team–the coding teams would be more suitable for these complaints to be addressed to, as they're responsible for implementing the features that are breaking dark+shiny textures.
I'm not at all questioning the validity of your complaints. However… this is Torley's personal blog.
You can file a support ticket here. This may be depriciated by JIRA, but it's still around.

Okay, disregard part of what I said. I missed Torley's previous post stating he's managing Windlight. The support ticket thing should still be somewhat useful, though.

Juliet must have had a bad day. But who has none? So take it easy Ju Ju.
Tried FL and found this iteration snazzier especially considering how much work is done on the atmospheric… noticeable. The fact that more relativism (re: light) is introduced with this client is obvious. I trust LL on making sure that no shuttering bugs are left alive once the baby hits the crib.
But you Torley seem distressed. We all know you sleep with PJIRA and the fact that she is so demanding only makes our concerns grow. So feel invited for a casual break down in Chumong whenever and if I'm not there check the builds and send me the list, I have friends at FedEx that do heavy primmed shipment. But if needed, at the next occurrence of "avalanche of work" and similia in a future post of yours will start an Open Letter to YouKnowWho to give this good monkey a day off

The coding team won't listen, doesn't really have a blog (that I know of), support tickets are utterly useless and Torley is the one who adds mayor propaganda for Windlight every day so I _think_ he at least has a way to communicate with the people who are responsible for Windlight.
So… I'm complaining here because I know Torley reads comments on his own blog. I know it sucks but this is the best way I know of to reach anyone who has a say in the matter.

@Juliet: So, intending to make your Second Life easier, I hope you also read the Official Linden Blog, because that dang JIRA login bug was fixed (yours truely posted about it, it's good news):
I encourage using the Issue Tracker because as noted as on other posts on my blog and this page, which is linked to from my profile, organization helps me get work done for you:
I hear stray mentions of bugs in lots of places, but it is time-consuming to keep track of them, which is why putting them in one place which is designed to track, action, and resolve such nasty problems — the Issue Tracker — is warmly appreciated.
I'm Product Manager for WindLight project, so I'm directly responsible for community communication with the team, yes. I did get many questions about WindLight issues — please remember that "First Look" is akin to a sneak preview, preliminary, and things are bound to break. Also, see:
I made a lot of reply to the known issues you state, so please feel free to have a look. And of course, I absolutely promise to make more updates as more bugs are fixed and we stabilize performance. I hope this helps some in your understandably harsh time of frustration!
@Erbo: That is beautiful, I dig the pun of that title, thanx for sharing!
@Smiley: Alas I can't make requests like that, mainly because I am currently flooded in them… if I said yes, I'd have to say yes to all to be fair. Solivar is also on Flickr tho, under the name of "jefsme", so you can find him there.
@Elix: Thanks for doing your best to be helpful! When frustrated, best to head for the light instead of descending into the darkness. Hey that reminds me, your lamp is still up at my Watermelinden Land.
@starcomber: PJIRA is hungry and continues to grow so much… so far, over 110+ WindLight issues, a number are dupes but I want a good experience for us all too. Thankya for the invite, that has a beautiful poeticism….

@Torley: I saw, last time I was on. I'm mostly cleaning up in the twilight, now, though.
