can't ever have it all

2006-06-23

4:12 AM here. Still working. Took a nap earlier, that was it. I'd better get sleep soon or I'll be totally wasted for the big birthday events today—and yes, today, June 23rd, is Second Life's 3rd Birthday! Has my blog made that obvious enough? :)

'Cuz of this, I haven't been able to cover the bday events to my satisfaction. Those are regrets. But, can't ever have it all. And thankfully, I'm continuing to learn the value of being with good people, working+laying together.

Several minutes ago, I was banging my head (figuratively), testing the new Groups system. A great group of its own within Linden Lab is working on it. Brilliant, superb, very nice people. It's an honor to work with them at such a great company.

Something, in all my forthrighteousness, I wish was communicated more… most Residents never know about the bugs that were fixed and problems that did get solved before they ever saw the light of day. It's easy to complain about what you see, harder to propose solutions, and even more difficult to be a "chess player". Maybe someday we could make more of these lists public, to detail more of the development progress. (For you can get pregnant in a day, but a baby isn't born for many months yet!) But who'd it matter to?

There's a related quote from Futurama that'll haunt me forever; I lifted this from this page:

God: Bender, being God isn't easy. If you do too much, people get dependent on you. And if you do nothing, they lose hope. You have to use a light touch, like a safecracker or a pickpocket.
Bender: Or a guy who burns down a bar for the insurance money.
God: Yes, if he makes it look like an electrical thing. If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
