Second Life needs remarkable marketing & promotion. If you don't care, heed my caution, for this video can induce love surges and compel you to experience inworld for yourself.
And if you're already a Resident, stay tuned for future followup, and share this with a friend who should be in SL with you.
Don't just stand out. Dance, and saunter on for the credits…

- Havok 4 physics
- WindLight atmospheric rendering
- Sculpted prims

Dear Torley,
I showed this to a friend but instead of trying SL they just accused me of slipping crack into their drink.
Oh, wow. That's a superb piece of work – and the shadowing code looks like it'll be well worth looking forward to! (True, I could compile it in locally, but there's the little matter of a Radeon 9700 Mobility.. still, it could be educational just looking at the shader code involved)
Think it needs more bunnies, though. =:)
@Henrik: Fixed! Sorry about that!
@Colin: Drugs are but a mere shadow (heh) of living one's dreams!
@Porsupah: Agree, bunnies should be better represented in the next round. Some Resident-compiled viewers like http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/ have shown off shadowing.
*draw drops – hits floor*
holy smokes Torley!! how exciting and incredible! so beautiful and well done, you are the true master
Wow Torley, that's an awesome video, you keep us more impressed with such creative talent you have, well you and the others that participated
This helps demostrating the world all the posibilities that Second Life brings to our hands.
With such good marketing everyone should get an account and start enjoying Second Life right away.
The shadows are one of the most amazing things, just waiting for them to hit the main viewer as it will be a exicing step for this great 3d word, and it will bring even more realism.
Two comments and a question:
1. The video needs a strong narrative to compensate for the heavy WTF factor;
2. the SL graphics engine is extremely poor in comparison to the current gaming engines – consider CryEngine2 for instance – so trumpeting 'hey, we got shadows!!' is probably not going to win the hearts and minds of those unfamiliar with SL;
3. Are shadows even available in the current viewer?
Sorry to be such a downer, Torley. The video is very pretty but for me it fails at even basic promotion or marketing beyond preaching to the already converted.
Ohh, shadowing. I *so* cannot wait for this.
But, alas, I concur with skribe Forti. In a nutshell, the video is simply not expansive enough to capture the breath and depth of content and possible environments that should be SL's marketing forte'.
And, it sure is high on the WTF factor. For marketing it sucks, but it sure was fun to watch.
)
@Ener & Lucian: Thank youuuu!
@skribe & Ghosty: I definitely have to disagree there, because your points are about validity in a different direction. A key question you didn't bring up was: "Who are we marketing to here?" and that's what I deliberately left unanswered, to see who'd bring that up.
Two hints:
(1) It isn't "WTF" to emerging "blue oceans".
(2) The word "demoSLene" was chosen for a reason(s).
Re: #3, I'm glad that sparked your curiosity. They're not in the main viewer, but available in experimental viewers.
Thanx for watching!
Hi Torley,
thank you for the great video – the soundtrack is totally kick-ass I love it and of course your Facelight 3000 made me laugh my head off "… everything else is just dim lights" XD.
Though I think the target group is more the SL-insider than the new resident, since there are some sidekicks in there you don't necessarily understand if you don't know the SL community. One way or another great video, great tune!
Keep going Torley and thanks for sharing that!
Nice vids. One day I hope to have the vid skills of Torley.
But Torley… We can't advertise until the system can handle 150,000 concurrency. Crack the whip and get us there!
OMG Torley…that's killer!!! You amplified your own awesome this time!
That vid needs to be put on the SL home page instead of that geeky pic" Buy Land" on top of the page!
wOOT!!
So cool! I will show it when I want to introduce SL to friends and colleagues.
I'm also with skribe here, touting shadows in a 3D app in 2008 is like congratulating yourself for adding a print feature to a word processor: should have been there day one. Per-pixel lighting? What about shaders much less real bump mapping? This is no showcase for 3D rendering, though perhaps for Second Life it works. But selling Second Life through visuals is a hard sell as it already looked antiquated at launch.
As skribe said, this really is only preaching to the converted who have already swallowed last century's rendering tech.
Absolutely amazing work! Very artistic & creative. It shows that Second Life doesn't need to be an imitation of real life. More of an expression to allow your creativity to come out in ways that you may not be able to express it in the real world.
YAY
*still loves Torley's vids*
Torley,
FANTASTIC! Incredible and very, very artistic.
Thanks for make machinimas with this quality.
