Fashionably

I've switched back to using this cramped editor instead of Zoho Writer for the time being, 'cuz I've noticed an irritating bug which prevented the right-clicky contextual menu from coming up after using it several times, unless I restart. (I'm headed to report it at the Zoho Writer forums.) One major prob with blog-city's editor is that this box I'm typing in right now is vertically unresizeable, so I have a lot of screen space going to waste. Alas, c'est tragique, mon dieu.

Speaking of French, I've really enjoyed reading the first issue of Second Style magazine. Second Life has grown to the point where Resis can come together and collaborate not only on things which are entirely inworld, but external connections to SL too. Second Style does have an inworld version which can be read a la HUD, but it is much too low-rez for my hi-fi tastes. So I go with the PDF.

Particularly enamorable to me is the sheer usage of sloping gentle gradients and sans-serif fonts, which makes the readout a pleasure on my new monitor (a Samsung SyncMaster 204B). I can read PDFs in such a clear, crisp way that really has me believing that, yes, typography is an art, a fashion unto its own. Some little letters will wear skirts, others gowns—some are denuded. Do not let any of this fool you…

My point being, if I've never come into—or heard of—Second Life before, I'll want to be pleasantly surprised, caught off-guard by the realization that, "Hey, dammnit, I can't actually buy these things for real! Grrrr! But if I could, I would." Sorta like talking about buying land in some new, exotic region of the grid to a friend, and them thinking it's a special metanesian island they've never heard of before. Yeah, there'll be more crossovers in the future. But it's not just that: it's speaking about the culture of SL in a way that is "transparent", laidback, and doesn't require further explanation. Don't stop to say, "It's an online world, so-and-so…" Just go, "I'm wearing this new dress, and it is lovely."
