Firefox Quicksearches

Posted on: July 20, 2006

I use Firefox as my primary web browser, and Quicksearches are a lot of fun and save time. Instead of having to load a page and entering the query in its own search bar, I can do it directly from Firefox's address bar. For example, I just set up a Quicksearch to search our new Knowledge Base. Here's what it looks like:

The image —http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f329/Torley_Linden/QuickSearch.png? cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

So basically, if I enter:

kb light

It'll search, bringing up this page:

See where "light" is? I've emphasized it. To make a Quicksearch, it's as easy as replacing whatever the query is with "%s":

as you can see from the picture. I've also done a few others:

as well as internal company tools. Feel free to use them as you wish!

I literally do a few hundred searches a day, so saving a few seconds—and the resulting bandwidth—each time gives me a tidy little extra chrono-pocket that I can allocate towards more tasks.

All part of a healthy work-life balance.
