Flaggers fly higher
Posted on: May 10, 2007Madcow Cosmos sent me another smile-inducing folder of Resis building flexi-flags in Second Life @ Harbinger's Haven, presumably inspired by my "How to make a flag that waves in wind" video tutorial. Wish I knew their names so I could thank them, tho I've received personal notes from others (and have been sent some flags!)… so I'm glad to see this craft continues! Here's a roundup from my Flaggers Flickr set:
Congrats! Flagmakers of the Grid unite!
Another more-than-interesting thing to note is the 3 USA flags — that's a default texture from our Library. (And when are we going to upgrade it with a better preset collection, if not altogether replace it with a better social way of sharing textures, like Cid Vilas' tFinder?)
A key to successful longterm content creation is to believe all your later work will rest on the foundation of your baby steps. Some people are afraid to get started because "Oh gawd my first try will look like crap!" but remember, keep the timeline in perspective: the world has no shortage of successful artists whose early catalogue is plundered, because there's significant power in origin stories.
Getting started is what gets you going, and being persistent and proud of yourself will take you a lot further than the ridiculous excess of self-deprecation I see nowadays. It's one thing to be open to improvement, but don't cut yourself down — fly your flag higher.

We've actually had a couple of flexi flags flying at the Evans Family Compound practically from its founding. I set up a flagpole flying a Colorado flag, and, when Danielle saw it, she insisted I add a New York flag as well.
A good place to check out flag images is at Flags of the World, which covers a variety of vexillological topics. ("Vexillology" is the study of flags. What a word, huh?)

@Erbo: New word I learned, thanks for teaching me. I wonder how that came to be because "vex" makes me think of "voodoo", or placing a curse on someone. *checks out da website*
