Free Telehubs for the People!

Posted on: May 21, 2006

If you've grown up newly in Second Life, you may have never seen—or merely heard of—Telehubs. For they are a thing of the past. Learn more at the SL History Wiki here.

Used to be, before direct teleportation (as hard as it is to imagine), a TP would take you into the "coverage" area of the nearest Telehub, with a red beacon lighting the way. And then you'd typically have to fly a few hundred meters, and this would take some time. The cliche used to be that there were malls surrounding Telehubs which would act as "scoops" to suck you into the shops. Literally, "tourist traps". It's horrific how barbaric and, well, primitive it sounds. Yet, 'twas a common thing in the SL culture of the day. (I can feel the stirrings of nostalgia!)

I've made peace with my Telehub rage, and I hope you can too. :) Thanx to the help of Ryan Linden, who worked on creating the Telehubs, they are being given out free to the Resis of SL. If you want a free bundle, you can snag the Telehub pack on SL Exchange. Props to nimrod Yaffle for putting them up; see forum CONTEXT.

What's being done with them…

I once had a crazy dream that Telehubs were refashioned into vehicles, houses, and even transforming giant robots. If you've done something of this magnitude, let me know k?
