Go Vertical
Posted on: April 30, 2006Ever since I got my 204B monitor, I've been looking at ways to maximize screen real estate. Some things came as a byproduct: I noticed that with this monitor being fairly large, it was slightly harder to see what was at the very bottom. As a result, at 1600×1200 resolution (upgraded from the previous 1024×768 on a very blurry CRT), I moved my Windows taskbar to the left, stacking it vertically.
Today, I did the same with my Firefox tabs. I found an extension called Vertigo, and now, my tabs line up on the left (200 pixels wide I've set it), so I can see titles of pages amply. Some've mentioned before that there comes a waste of space with this arrangement, but the way I look at it, it's not uncommon for me to have two dozen tabs open at once, filling up the void.
It'll likely take me several days to get better accomodated: already, I've noticed some quirks. For example, I can't seem to drag-and-drop tabs to reorder them: it just results in some wild flickering instead. Ugh. I'll keep experimenting.
On the righthand side of my screen is Google Desktop, which I'm not really using to its fullest. I think I should have some feeds in there which update with live info, but that might prove too distracting. Besides, I use Sage to keep track of news. I'll likely discover more kewl toys to play with soon.
