Googling for "video tutorial" shows our Second Life page as #4!
Posted on: January 16, 2008I'm PREASED (muhaha-ha!) to share that searching Google for "video tutorial" (even if it isn't in quotation marks) yields the Second Life Video Tutorials page on our public wiki as the #4 result! Incidentally, just a notch above Apple's (which I really respect and enjoy).
(Searching for "video tutorials" plural gets us to #3.)
While I'm a face popularly associated with community education and vidtuts in general, it's essential for me to emphasize that this achievement wasn't by my hands alone — numerous Lindens boosted this to where it is today, from Cornelius & Creative Services getting it featured on the front of secondlife.com, to Brett recently inviting me to contribute to the Showcase, and Rob (Open Source woohoo!) overseeing wiki health. And it doesn't end there, because I've had guidance & support from Robin, the time Jeska asked me to communicate new Search, Kip's encoding help, and interaction with many across departments at Linden Lab: whether it's the suggestion Prospero gave to do TotW #2, finding bugs as I filmed segments that I promptly reported to devs & QA, and incoming ideas from Concierge & Support which'll find their way into future vids! Let's not forget Team WindLight's enthusiasm (since the initial promo Pastrami had great feedback on) either. Now, this makes me feel incomplete, because I know I've left out key names here. But since I'm an optimist, the future is a big place, and that gives me a lot of room for future name-droppin'!
Furthermore, I always remember that Second Life is community-driven. And it's those Resident-created vidtuts that make up a substantial portion of the page's usefulness. I'm continually on the lookout for more, each with their own special style. Gosh, I wish I could speak more non-English languages so I could better understand the international contributions we have. But all in all, this is like a spice rack being filled up. Very flavorful indeed!
In time, I'm hopeful a society of sorts will bubble up around video tutorial makers. We're young now, but look at how seriously, say, Microsoft Word video training and Adobe Photoshop screencasts get taken… and that gives us oodles of growth to look forward to. I extend the hearty SLexpansion to our machinimatic and video-bug-repro brethren.
If you make lovely video tutorials, be sure to list them on that page, and if you'd rather just watch and learn… hey, there's plenty of that for you too!
And if you've got an idea for a video tutorial, suggest it here.

I will be posting my video tutorials as soon as I'm able to. I need to try to get WeGame working (it crashes at start up) so I can check that out and I am also starting the process of building a new desktop computer for better frame rates and stuffs for the tuts. I have been collecting various video tutorials, many of them listed on the wiki page, and posting them in my mentor blog (http://kendracharlton.wordpress.com). I have found that video tutorials are great because if you miss something you can just rewind as many times as you need. I have given several new residents links to tutorials from Tip of the Week tuts. ^_^ (And yay! I'm an official mentor now, if you didn't already know. *beams*)

Now what did i tell you about writing with a permanent marker on your computer screen?

@Kendra: Great to hear about it! And yes, hitting pause or rewind is beneficial with vidtuts. I know I can go pretty fast sometimes (though I don't want to *rush* through the material, a *brisk* pace keeps things lively). I haven't seen your blog in awhile *goes to check it out*. And congrats on being a Mentor!
@Laetizia: *squiggles some more*

Hehe. It's #3 now! As soon as I get a better computer("Sigh") I will be able to make some movies(videos)!
I really want to make a SL video about a lonely Boy(or Girl) in the virtual world of SL. Of course it will have a happy ending! Did you really think I would make a sad ending? Maybe later. It will be about a dragon trapped in a castle controled by the Evil Torley(We all know you're not evil).
The possabilitys are endless!
I also want to thank you Torley. Without you're videos and this blog, my inspiration on making a video would seize to exsist.

@stonie: Thank you so much for your gracious comment! Hope you're able to get filming in the not-too-dustant future.
I may have an evil twin! He needs to be knocked down!
You are most welcome. ;D
