Habitat gets a Second Life of its own?

Posted on: October 1, 2006

Does this sound familiar to you?

Once a human being enters Habitat, he or she takes on the visual form of an Avatar, and for all intents and purposes becomes one of these new-world beings. In the world of Habitat, people can play games and go on quests, but mainly they meet other people and have fun.

I'm surprised something hasn't hit the news radar yet — at least that I'm aware of — so I'm going to blog about it.

A flock of really crafty retrocomputing hobbyists took it upon themselves to relaunch Quantum Link (Q-Link), which predates Second Life as a social space and online world in a number of ways. Most exciting is the possibility that Habitat — yes, one of Second Life's "grandparents"! — may be in the works to be revived from hibernation.

Which means, at least in theory, you could live the past of virtual reality similar to how it existed two decades ago. If it comes true, I'm definitely singing praises and signing up in line. It's a must for any budding metaverse student.

As talks about the future of online worlds and how they'll affect society continue to bloom and bristle, there's not been a lot of visible exploration in this direction. I've championed learning about Habitat and SL History on a number of previous occasions (read Gwyneth Llewelyn's comment in there!) and highly recommend them to any Resi, old, new, or in-between. This goes for Lindens too!

Without culture, we are worthless.
