How to boost the mic volume on your Realtek audio codec

2007-08-11

My Asus P5K motherboard has an integrated Realtek ALC883 sound system: it's alright, but one of the glaring gaps out-of-the-box is that the microphone level, by default, it just too dang soft. What's even more frustrating is looking in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices will show the mic volume as grayed out and unchangeable, when infact, it really can be amped up.

Here's how to boost the level, whether you're on this motherboard, or another which uses the same or similar audio codec:

  • Install the drivers first. They will most likely be included on a CD-ROM that comes with your motherboard.

  • After doing the mandatory restart, look in your Windows taskbar for the "Realtek HD Audio Manager" icon. On my system, it looks like a pixelated orange speaker. (Alternatively, you can go to Control Panel > Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager.)

  • Double-click that icon and then click the Mixer tab. (Now here's where you'll find yourself declaring, "Why didn't they make this more obvious?")

  • See the "<" and ">" buttons on the top row, Playback? This is understandably unintuitive because the section's labeled "Realtek HD Audio output", when you'd expect to find the mic volume control in the input section — where it's frustratingly grayed out. Don't worry, keep clicking ">" until you see "Mic Volume". The first time you go there, the volume slider will probably be set at nearly the bottom. Drag that all the way up to the top. If applicable, you may want to do the same for "Front Pink In", which should correspond with the front mic jack on your computer's case.

  • After setting that, try test recording and watching the levels in your fave audio editor. Windows Sound Recorder is mediocre, so if you need to look at meters to gauge volume more accurately, check out Audacity — it's free.

  • If that's still too soft, go back to the Realtek HD Audio Manager, and click the ".." button. You'll see this is where the "Microphone Boost" option is (on most integrated audio codecs like AC'97, it's found via the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel. Check it and click OK, and test again in your preferred audio editor.

  • Optional: if you hear a lot of hiss and white noise when recording, you may find it helpful to mute non-active inputs. In the Realtek HD Audio Manager, in the bottom section, click the little speaker icons for "CD Volume", "Line Volume", and "Stereo Mix" so they've got red X's.

This is how I've got it setup:

I've not verified this, but the above may also be applicable for the Realtek ALC861, ALC681-VD-GR, ALC880 Series, ALC882, ALC888, ALC888T, ALC885, and ALC888S, and maybe others too.

Hope this helps those of you who've also been maddened by this issue but couldn't find out how to make the situation better. Special thanx goes to my wife for mentioning my recorded voice was too quiet, leading me to do this research, and more details about the various finer points can be found in this forum thread. I love sharing info to make your life easier and save you the headaches of digging for answers.

OMG! Microphone boost!

Why the hell is it listed under "audio OUTPUT" ?!?!

Thanks so much for finding this!

humberto 2009-10-20 at 8:20 PM UTC

Thank you so much, I said the same that Takashi (Why the hell is it listed under "audio OUTPUT" ?!?!).
Very useful your post, thanks.

For those who don't have a mic input option, you should have one that's says "rear pink input" or something like that

cheers

Thank you so much.
After trying a webcam with microphone, a dedicated microphone and most recently a headset with microphone I have made the changes suggested here and all of them now work.

Who do Realtek use for testing?

thx!
one word only : "mic boost"
so hard to find it, and its not even visible in standard audio settings, had to manual boost rear pink

Erm… I have a question! I dun have "Mic Volume" in my output… How can i install it?

Tom 2009-12-26 at 3:16 PM UTC

Wow, this was hard to find! Looking in the microphone *output* and finding the tiny "…" button is not something I would have done. Thank you for finding this! If I'm unlucky enough to have Realtek sound hardware, at least I'm lucky you have it too and posted this trick.

Thank You very much. you posted the exact answer to solve my 3 hours problem!
Thanks again from Portugal!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

You have no idea how many settings I've went through and how many times I've checked and rechecked every damn audio driver and audio setting in the control panel to figure this out.

My only addition to this is that you don't change the mic volume, but the front line in or back line in depending on where your mic is plugged. Other than that, great tip.

You ARE fucking awesome man, saved so much time, thanks.

Nah, i already know about mic boosting settings and such … what i'm after is what all the settings are from start to finish in the Realtek "mixer tabs" when i somehow lost my mic output.
IN PLAYBACK …

1. Wave .. up or down ?
2. SW Synth .. up or down ?
3. Front .. up or down ? (i use my headset at the back ports pink and green)
4. Rear .. up or down ?
5. Subwoofer,Center and Side .. up or down ?
6. SPDIF .. muted or not ?
7. Front Green In .. up or down?
8. Rear Blue In .. up or down ?
9. Front Pink In .. up or down ?
10. Rear Pink In .. up or down ?
11. Rear Grey, Rear Orange and Rear Black .. up or down ?
12. Rear Green In .. up or down ?
13. Lastly .. CD up or down ?

IN RECORD ..
1. CD Volume , Mic Volume , Line Volume and Stereo Mix … are these muted or not ? (they don't have sliders on them)

Help on these issues will enable me to get my mic working again hopefully :)
Thanks, Alan. (scratching hair out as I cannot use my vent without the mic when gaming) :(

Oh, I have a HUGE problem.
There is such a BIG NOISE when I'm recording something, I don't know how to get rid of it. When I checked "microphone boost" it only did worse. What might be wrong?

Domarius 2010-03-10 at 1:42 AM UTC

WHY IS IT LIKE THIS??? I have owned my computer for over a year and have been leaning right in front of my mic every voice chat game I play! Finally I can sit back in my chair! They couldn't just support the standard windows interface, could they… always has to be some proprietary nonsense…

Most helpful; thanks a lot. What an obscure way to hide the controls!
