Jelina's Forum Friends
Posted on: September 17, 2006
NOTE: The following is an oasis in an imaginary desert. It's not to be confused with reality, but is extrapolated from real events. In some ways, not in the ways you might think, it's autobiographical.
Jelina has many friends. Jelina has a forum. Her friends are all her, of course—all 143 of them. She'd rather be called Jel, at least by some of her friends, which are, of course—her. Along with Sudoku and Nintendogs, Jel (which is what she'd rather be called), started an online forum site to talk to herself. She had, of course, many imaginary friends as a child. But she couldn't keep track of them. With a forum, she can.
So she posts as herself, and not as herself—at the same time. 142 discreet, distinct personalities, and her. Some of them are trolls, some of them are droll. Some of them use big words, others have image macros, and there's a lot who like drama. Some are just looking for a good deal, and perhaps using the forum more like a Craig's list than a My space. But it's okay—they're all her.
Jel types pretty fast, an average of 180 wpm sustained. At least over half an hour. I suppose this helps her to post as 142+1 different people. It takes up time, but she also enjoys other things. Along with her Nintendo DS, Jel likes scrapbooking, knitting sweaters. Astrophysics is a latent hobby.
She's a savant. But not an asocial one. She once got four of her "real friends" to post on her forum, but they were confused. At first, they didn't even realize it was all Jel, all the time. Some schoolyard bullies used to tease Jel, and she began to wonder if she had multiple personality/disassociative identity disorder. But how can she? She has such a good memory, and her imaginary friends all talk to each other. Some don't get along, no. But they communicate.
This one forum, like an island, in the midst of the Outernet.
Eventually, more people came by. And posted. And got to know a dozen, maybe more, of Jel's forum friends. Like mr_baker, the chef with an attitude. Or Sandra White, who preferred to capitalize her name yet considered herself submissive. Pro(Z)2544, despite the numbers in his name, is a very intelligent fellow with a passion for horticulture—especially blue roses.
Some of Jel's forum friends would go on vacation, and others would be banned by the admins for bad behavior. Five admins, all Jel, all the time.
Jel herself didn't have a high post count. She likes (liked?) to be low-profile.
But what's important is she has many friends.
