Linuxville, here we come!

Watermelon TuxI had the honor of attending a SL Linux User Group meeting inworld on Wednesday @ 12 PM PDT/SLT. They're held weekly on Angel Sunset's land on Maryport (182, 150, 55). LOTS of friendly Linux-adept Resis, and I mentioned several times know I know who to ask for help! Hehe. Great to see some peeps I know frequent the Linux forum but that I haven't seen inworld before.

This continues from my earlier adventures dipping into Linux like… a watermelon penguin! I definitely felt a vibe of creative experimentation, and I've enjoyed using Linux so far—specifically KDE on Knoppix as run from Drake Bacon's Second Life Linux Live CD. It's a whole process of discovery, since it's been so long since I last really discovered a new Operating System.

Part of the magic for me is, it's kind of like studying etymology and different dialects: there are familiar conventions like dialog boxes, buttons, and scrollbars, but past that, the underlying structure may be quite different, and even subtleties in how a GUI is approached never fails to amaze me—for example, the menu-bar-per-window of Windows vs. the single menu bar of Macintosh. When I was younger, I wasn't so openminded, but now I find myself willing to sink for awhile then learn to swim in new waters like… a watermelon penguin!

Also appealing to me is the whole notion of "free software"—a liberated spirit, not to be confused with "free beer" as Angel herself pointed out. ;) But instead of pinning too many buzzwords on any of this, I'm just going to enjoy the ride.

I did manage to get a screen capture of the Linux Live CD not working on my dual-core Opteron:

KDE Crash

If anyone knows a solution, please advise!

However, it did work fine on my older PC, a Pentium 4, as I mentioned earlier.

Linux User Group 1

A good time was had by all. Thanxies for having me over!

Linux User Group 2

I'd like to be sure to mention we have a new, dedicated Linux developer named Tofu Linden. It even says in his profile, "Your local friendly Linux Client developer!  >:D". As you may already know, some long-awaited fixes for the Second Life Linux client are being included, with more to come. Count me in for coming on the journey and applying my Resident Experience passion to what is already a passionate and savvy group in our community!
