Moving shadows

2008-06-10

Experimental excitement. I missed being able to roll into the shade for a long time. Now, this slice of joy returns — you might say: "Let there be WindLight, and now there is darkness."

More videos are appearing, lindseywarwick, davidgross, and somatika have shared the shadow-world through their eyes.

This'll be grand for sundial fans.

That is awesome. Is that going to be in a first look viewer soon?

Coyote Cortes 2008-06-11 at 2:03 AM UTC

Great :) thats I think the last missing element in the Windlight viewer.
At least it would save us alot prims with shadowtextures on it.
Can't wait for this to have it released ^.^

Otenth Paderborn 2008-06-11 at 4:08 AM UTC

@Coyote #2 Don't jump the gun. Watch it again–no shadows for the prim objects in the sim.

Raul Crimson 2008-06-11 at 5:11 AM UTC

Even, as Otenth remarks, there is not prim shadows (except attached ones) i think is a great start. I'm really excited about shadowing.

@Colin
I don't expect to see it soon.

Right now you have to download a specific subset of the source code and build it by yourself (or use a 3rd party viewer built by someone else).

Also, you must have a Nvidia 8xxx/9xxx graphic card to use this.

If you're on FriendFeed, come here to talk about SL:

@Othenth I really thought I saw all objects shadow up in lindsey's vid. Anywayz, it's great to see things like that. It does, like Arch says, make things quite nice… Just hope for most people SL doesn't end up with sys req. like Crysis and progs like that :)

Torley 2008-06-11 at 7:28 AM UTC

This isn't planned for a First Look viewer *yet* but there is a DIY patch out there in the wild some Residents have applied.

There *are* prim shadows! Look, look carefully and watch the linked vids made by fellow Resis. :)

I'll post another video shortly making this more clear. Or shadowy.

Tenebrous Pau 2008-06-11 at 8:01 AM UTC

All prims cast shadows on all other prims & land. It really does add a lot of atmosphere.

At the moment only the sun & moon cast shadows though; local lights don't.

Now what I'm really waiting for is depth of field *nod*, *nudge* :)

Mimzy Runningbear 2008-06-11 at 8:48 AM UTC

Me and My Shadow, strolling down the avenue… how cool is this!!!

Otenth Paderborn 2008-06-12 at 4:10 AM UTC

I've seen the other videos now (including yours!) that show the prim shadows. Very impressive!

Torley 2008-06-15 at 7:35 AM UTC

@Tenebrous: "Depth of field" reminds me of one of my longtime requests for a "long exposure" camera in Second Life. ;D

Thanks for checking it out!

chruschef Culdesac 2008-06-16 at 3:38 PM UTC

Where can we find this patch?

Connie Sec 2008-07-06 at 11:35 PM UTC

Ill be looking for the patch too.

chruschef Culdesac 2008-07-08 at 11:40 AM UTC

yeah.. I'm running some real extreme hardware here,
GTX280, 790i nVidia board, QX9775 for all my gaming needs.. It'd be real nice to get some shadows in SL:)
…(if needs to be compiled, I don't mind :D )

Mystik Menker 2008-09-06 at 4:26 PM UTC

i surely hope Prim Shadows will be re-used in SL again, i love to build and also love the extra features, i saw on SLwiki that they removed it after the beta version and it won't be coming back anymore… stupid, it's such a waste of a nice extra feature!!!

Mystik Menker 2008-09-06 at 5:39 PM UTC

Oh hi again, i've found some nice videos on youtube of Dynamic Shadows in Second Life… they look really awesome, i really hope this is gonna be in the future releases of the SL client, don't know how the shadows looked in the older beta releases but i'm sure this is gonna be sweet, even better i think!!!

Another greet and a paw from the jackal

BTW Torley, i love your tutorials!!!

Torley 2008-09-14 at 12:07 PM UTC

@Mystik: Thank-you for watching my tuts!

Hey. I tried to figure out whats going on with dynamic shadows in SL, but i couldn't find any sources from 2009. I just tried those shadows in the 1.23 client (via 'RenderUseFBO' and 'RenderDeferred'). They look quite nice and as i'm building furniture i'd love to know whether this will ever make it as a default into the official client? And if so, is there ANY speculation on WHEN this will may be?

I'd love to know this since i'm wondering whether i should still include a static shadow prim in my builds or not. Hope to get an info here. :)
