My cat dances to techno with NewBlueFX

2008-12-22

Cats can dance! I've proof. I caught Sushi doing biscuits on the bed. He seemed awfully pleased with himself, so I shot some footage and put this together.

The original techno track, "Subtellite" by Timo Maas, has a chunky enough groove but can be dreadfully monotonous, so I loaded an excerpt into my Torq Xponent and did some filtering, echoes, pitchbend, and other sonic manipulation. I also applied choice effects in Vegas — most of the visual magic was accomplished with NewBlueFX, which I love for their diversity and wealth of presets. (You know what I believe about that.) Full disclosure: I've started working for them for the best of reasons (chief among them because I love using their plugins, of course). Here's some examples:

  • At the beginning where it's black & white, I used Film Pro to give an aged effect. The "Film Noir" preset definitely lends a sinister, almost evil ambience. But Sushi ain't bad… he's… well, he's not misunderstood either. Let's just say he's a party cat.
  • Tempo glitch @ 0:27 is Active Camera at work. It's one of my faves because you can add naturalistic motion to shots which are too steady (like Second Life and other machinima).
  • Ever wanted to obscure the innocent or guilty? NewBlue's Pixelator, part of the Video Essentials pack, can do that easily! Check it out @ 0:33. I did it because I thought it'd be weird — who blocks out the face of an animal? I do, apparently.
  • I used a combination of smears and motion blur to get the trippy effects leading up to the grey-white @ 1:02.
  • The neato morph transitions @ 1:02 and 1:19 are from NewBlue Twirl.

Tempo-synced stutters and some camera zooms + pans were done by hand by following my earlier tutorial, but I wish I knew a better way to automate 'em.

If you do or want to get into video editing, Sony Vegas + NewBlueFX are a delicious combo. I can give many more reasons why if you ask!

Is the song in surround sound? I'm listening to it in my 5.1 headset and I've never heard of sound like this before!

*Smiles and Claps!* He's not dancing… LOL. He's doing that ole' paw in the cushion trick. I bet he went right to sleep when you were finished but… He's super cute!

Reminds me of my cat named Nigeria. *Waves* Gooooo Kitty Power! Oh yea, the remixed song rocks!
