My first podcast-thing! Stream of Superconsciousness #1

2007-11-28

Hello, my name is Torley

Ever want to hear what it sounds like inside my head? Here ya go! =)

Story behind this: I thought,

"Aye, I have a lot of ideas in my head, I think them faster than I can type them… but talkin' ain't too bad. I've done recordings before, but not like this. I want to put this on the Internet."

THEN I DID IT!!!!

Haha, next thing you know you'll make your own "Second Life tip of the week"! '^_^

All this time my husband (Bebop) has said that my train of thought was "totally ADD" .. but I think I'll rename it to "Torley." For example:

When I begin to attempt to explain what I'm thinking about and I jump from here to there - though ALL the subjects are related (as derivative as they may be) I'll just say "Bear with me honey I'm a bit Torley right now."

I know that I don't speak for everyone, hell, probably not even a majority (or a fraction for that matter) but I was 'with' you the whole time throughout that entire conversation you had with yourself.

Where most people get frustrated by my change in gears - I think you're one of the few that could handle it.

Great stuff. I used to do a lot of stuff like that when I was performing full time. A great way to open the the mind and get the creativity started. I really need to start doing that again.
Thanks for posting that!

Wow! I'm actually surprised at how entertaining that was. Normally I don't spend such a stretch listening to someone talk without interjecting or talking back myself, but that really was quite fun listening to all the things you had on your mind at a given time. You should record another one sometime, Torley. You have a lot of interesting things to say!

One particular thing stuck with me and that was the part near the beginning about the Deus Ex games and Walton Simons. I just recently played the first game for the very first time(better late than never!) and if I remember correctly, doesn't Simons die in a climactic battle with JC? I can understand reviving him for a future installment if it was a normal death, but all the augmented agents in the game had that self-destruct mechanism that activates upon death, including Simons.

Anyway, didn't mean to go on about it; I'm sure you've discussed the subject extensively in the past. I understand wanting to see a particular character return in a later game, I just don't think Simons has much of a chance of coming back from such a gruesomely utter defeat. Though I suppose much less probable things have happened in the world of video games(I'M LOOKING AT YOU, LIQUID OCELOT!!)

@Smiley: Haha what are you trying to say? ;)

@Orchid: OMG that's so funny. Hahah, I'm flattered "Torley" has entered your lexicon that way. A large part of switching topics for me has to do with transitions between them, e.g., what seems "random" on the surface is actually connected. I like to explain the association between my diverse thoughts, but sometimes there isn't enough time for that to happen. I'm glad you could stay aboard my trains o' thoughts tho! *big smile*

@Elvis: Yup, I find it refreshing and helpful to share ideas out, not have any self-filtering, and LET IT ALL OUT!

@Val: Aww thanks! Means a lot to me. You have a good point about Walton Simons, but the intriguing thing is the same voice actor, Tom Hall, played a similar-looking character (with a beard) in Invisible War… that Project Director shown in the intro movie. It's hypothesized that he's actually a clone of Simons (and maybe not as "evil"), but since clones are a valid part of the DX Universe, I'm open to WS coming back another way! *gets all fanboyish* Of course, I'm going to wait to see what time in the future DX3 takes place in, if it'll be right after the end of IW or further still (it doesn't seem likely it'd be a prequel).

I'm also excited about MGS4… Hideo Kojima's sense of narrative, pacing, and humor = GENIUS!!!!

Hey Torley :)

Not sure if you have checked him out, but a previous tutor and friend of mine Neil Spiller has written a number of books on the architecture of cyberspace which is a fascinating examination of what human conciousness "needs" in the virtual realm. "Digital Dreams" is a good one.. and you are definitely right that the term cyberspace is still useful, the other terms to describe these environments dont necessarily cover its entire scope.

Yeah I agree Discovery is by far the greatest Daft Punk album.. because of the "feel" they created, which is actually unique itself and extends to create a whole universe of sound beyond the ( still great ) samples they started from. This really comes into its own when combined with visuals in the film Leiji Matsumoto / Toei Animation made over the entire album - Interstellar 5555.

The whole thing of are "virtual friends" or "virtual communities" 'real' is interesting and I feel strongly that the effects of virtual societies on humanity, whilst being enormously positive sometimes - also have some alarming qualities. In my view these are not being studied effectively enough at the moment. However I may not have found those people yet - would be great to hear of them if you know of any ?

also.. I'm reading Stumbling on Happiness atm.. :)

Really sharing of you to podcast this way, put it all out there without inhibition or worry. Great stuff.

Now THAT'S a podcast! Wow!

Looking forward to more.

MB Darrow 2007-12-03 at 6:51 AM PST

What a compelling beginning to podcasting. A riveting mind dump that seems random but really is an amazing way to organize chaotic thought. Very interesting stuff!

That was a trip! Enjoyed it loads. Good compression - 3 hours down to 30 mins. Cheers Torley

Dizzy Banjo 2007-12-03 at 8:46 AM PST

argh my lengthy comment got lost in wordpress.. wonder if its there anywhere.. :(

Sougent Harrop 2007-12-05 at 6:59 PM PST

I agree with Crap…….(hmmmm, that didn't come out right)

This was a hell of a podcast, all I need is to have it available in iTunes and I'd be set to go.

I did start to get a headache listening to it after a bit……I think your output rate exceeded my input capacity. ;)

Please do more……

This is a test comment !

Sounds like my head. I just can't get things out of it quick enough like you. I'm always banging from one topic to the next and making wild connections between everything that people can't see the relationship of.

Torley 2007-12-09 at 6:46 AM PST

Thanx each and everyone for listening! I really appreciate it!

@Dizzy: COMMENT FOUND I THINK! Thx for bringing it up @ my Office Hour, my Defensio filter accidentally flagged it as "spam".

You're always ready with further cool things to check out, eh? :D Thx for the pointer re: Neil Spiller, will Google him. Humans are funny when they abandon things (be they words, styles, philosophies, etc.) and then return to them in the future.

Interstella 5555 is incredible! It does well to really highlight the diversity of Discovery too. That creepy ol' Maestro dude was a pretty good character.

And re: people studying virtual communities, Howard Rheingold (who coined the term) and Aleks Krotoski are two respected names that come to mind. Both of 'em have presences in Second Life.

I often find "inhibition" is just a blocker to my creative potential, so thanx for listening and for your vote of confidence!

@Crap: Thankya!

@MB: Hmmm that gets me wondering if I could automatically have some sort of transcription service catalogue my podcasts and visualize the data. Thanks!

@Joi: Time's always a-tickin'. Thank-you.

@Sougent: *makes a note of how to list stuff in iTunes… I know Linden Lab's put some presentations there before*

@Dedric: I'm glad we can relate on that. I'm hoping by doing this more, that there'll be more people that go, "Aha! I'm glad it's not just me."
