My personal guide to high-quality photography is underway

Posted on: November 6, 2007

It doesn't feel like a doctoral thesis, more like a jaunt through the neon jungles of someland — it's been over 3 years and 100,000+ snapshots taken in Second Life; about 1/10 of those uploaded online, most of those sent as postcards.

I'm creating a Snapshot tips page on the public Wiki. It is, aptly put, the summation of what I've come to learn and love over the years. It came to be due to popular Resident request, for I get asked many questions about how I did X, Y, and Z — and not only that, because Lindens are prettifying up our San Francisco offices with avatar art come WindLight, and I've gotten my fair share of inquiries from Ashlei and other dear coworkers.

So, thus unfurls the scroll… what I know is for you to know. I am a firm-yet-flexible believer that knowledge is useless unless it's applied, and when shared, it's even more useful. Tofflerian philosophy dictates that knowledge is promiscuous, but instead of me uttering blasphemies on this here blog, why not take a gander that the Snapshot tips for yourself and let me know what you'd like to see? It's a work-in-progress and I putter away at it with much affection during stretches in my workday that aren't occupied with more pressing tasks.

And, in case you were wondering (of course you were), this long, continuous webpage screenshot was handily captured by the Save As Image Firefox Add-on. (After being scrooed over by sluggishly-moving web apps which often had laggard queues and frequent timeouts, and finding it too time-wasting to stitch together single screens manually, I wanted a fastlane!)

Well done Torley. I am becoming a fan of tutorials in general (and yours in particular!) I am so glad to be part of this time, and this kind of platform, which values so highly the sharing of information.

I like that you mention anti-aliasing.. this has made a huge improvement to my picture taking over the last few months. I look at so many beautiful SL pics in flickr, then click on 'larger size' and its all jaggie-full.. argh! and it's so easy to get rid of that!

    Thanks and like many others, patiently waiting .. okay .. * d y i n g * for WindLight to become available :)

Simondo: Thanks for sharing! And yus, the word about antialiasing has gotta get out more, because every shot without it taken will never quite be the same in terms of smooth quality.

/me is anxious for public WindLight too, I hope you have a good time with it :)
