My piano performances on Flash Flash Revolution

Posted on: September 12, 2006

If you've played Dance Dance Revolution, then you may find comfort in exercising your fingers over a game of Flash Flash Revolution. Alex wrote in to let me know he found out some of my piano recordings of video game music, under the name of "aspergian", were turned into FFR stages by Busurk_Lurk: "Flashman", "Tetris (Piano Version)", and "The Games We Played".

I haven't gone through the levels yet but, it's nice to know they're being finger-danced to out there.

And of course you can download all 17 minutes of the epic videogame megamix medley, "The Games We Played", in MP3. Epic not because it's long, but because it's fun. Courteous thankyous to blip.tv for hostage.

What video games did you use to play?

I heard your piano pieces through playing FFR and I loved all the movements to The Games We Played, I play piano myself and I absolutely love it. I really really wish you had made sheet music, everything was so beautiful, I didn't realize I could just download the music until I found this site, before I just played The Games We Played over and over again =) Now that I've found this site, I can't wait to listen to the other music you've composed =)

  2. Torley Says:

@Caitlin: Thank-you for listening, I hope you enjoy my other works too! I've gotten requests for sheet music frequently. The main problems with that for me are: (1) I don't write conventional notation (I have a working knowledge but it doesn't suit me), (2) not enough time, and (3) I'm still hoping someone else with mad transcription skillz will do it. I'd be more than happy to boost their name — I know at 17+ min., it's a veritable challenge!

  3. Charlie Horce Says:

    You play beautifully.
What games were the tunes from? Most of it is recognizable, but I don't recall a lot of them. Like…the intro.

  4. Torley Says:

@Charlie: Thanxies! You're just in luck, have a look at this expanded post: "The Games We Played on Flash Flash Revolution" for a complete listing.

Hey Torley, thanks for stoppin' by my LJ and commenting. I'm glad that you're starting to compose again. I really enjoy your music. It's so pretty! I think that it was awesome of you to take time to comment on fans' of yours' pages. I can't wait to listen to more of your music =D. BTW, I know your ethnic background, but where do you live now? I'm Korean originally but live in the states. Well, take care for now!

    ~Ben

  7. Torley Says:

@Korias|Ben: I'm in Canada! Likewise, thanx for coming by here! You take care too! =D

  8. Fooby Says:

I love this song! I can't get enough of it on FFR.

I have just one question. How can you download it to save on your computer?

  9. Torley Says:

    @Fooby: Try http://blip.tv/file/get/Torley-TheGamesWePlayed908.mp3

    and thank-you!

  10. Adam Bryant Says:

Well… I'm a large ear playing fan myself. I promise you I will learn this song! And it will sound better xD!

Only joking, it will never sound as good as this! Damn. It's like the best song ever! (When I get my cast off) I will send you my progress :)
    Cheers!

    And Thanks for the inspiration.

  11. Eric Says:

i just want to say how great of a piece this is. i showed it to my piano teacher and he said he could write the music for me if i wanted it. if he does i would be happy to send it to you so you can distribute it as you like. thanks alot.

  12. Kenichi Says:

I've gotta say, I was a partial fan of FFR a while ago, like months and months, but what kept me coming back was the challenge of some of their classical songs and the arcade tunes. I recently returned out of boredom and to my surprise, what did I find but this gem, divided into 5 parts. It is truly and amazingly beautiful, and I can't even begin to imagine the amount of effort that went into making such a masterpiece.

I am humbled before your piano-playing skills. I thank you profoundly for giving me both a treat for the ears and a challenge for the fingers.

  13. Torley Says:

@Adam, Eric, and Kenichi, thank you SO much for sharing! I'm happy you like "The Games We Played" so much; my roots inspiration, of course, is accredited to the original video game composers whose tuneage I've reinterpreted.

AFAIK no one has done a full score transcription for "TGWP", so if anyone, piano teacher or otherwise, wants to have a go, please do and let me know.

This piece was a pleasure to play and it was very cathartic to express my passion for so many entertaining classics.

You're all most graciously welcome. <|8-)

  14. Alex Says:

well…..I beat all 5 games to play on FFR, quite the challange due to all ur trills, the single notes were pretty easy because most of them were at a pace I can hit. The Writer of the SimFiles did a heck of a job writing all those left and chords into notes…those chords drove me nuts, but i beat em anyway, just dropping by to say great job and wundering if ur in any conservatory. Me? I'm in the Royal American Conservatory, just four more years, and 8 exams later I can be a certified piano teacher, but sports has me otherwise, anyhow just dropping by.

  15. Torley Says:

@Alex: I went through the Toronto Royal Conservatory and did all my practical exams but dropped out of theory because I was getting bored and had so many more worthwhile things to do with my time (in hindsight, I haven't regretted). I do hope if your goal is to be a teacher, that you succeed.

And yeah, I totally gotta give props to Rebirth0 for doing those simfiles… he was really inspired and helped get "TGWP" to a lot more people, which of course I'm extremely thankful for.

  16. ELRayford Says:

Thanks for TGWP its such a great song for ffr. It is truly EPIC.

  17. Craig Says:

I played TGWP on FFR and I had to find you and say this. Thank you for this song, listening to it brought back some old memories. I don't think something like this could have been done any better. I'm downloading it to my computer right now :)

  18. Torley Says:

@ELRayford and Craig, you guys are welcome! Thanks for listening; and again, I give my props to Rebirth0 for the stepping.

  19. Denis Says:

hey Torley, I love your music, but 1 question still leaves to be unanswered, for me at least..

Do you have the sheet music to this? if so could you email it to me?

  20. Daedalus Young Says:

Denis, I can't help but notice there's a similarity between this thread and the politics I'm watching on tv now: the question has already been answered :P ;)
There is no sheet music for this specific performance, but there's a list of games where the tunes come from. A lot of those do have sheet music online, for example, the Tetris tune can be found at Scribd, I'm sure you can find other games as well. Then it's a good excercise to play them and try to link them together.
For me it works like this: Torley inspires me in music, video, photography. I don't try to recreate his work, I look at it, and listen, and then take those ideas and make my own art. It is much more fun and will get you more positive feedback than simply copying one's work. :)
    Happy pianoing! :D

  21. Torley Says:

Thanks for helping to answer, Daed — awww! Kind words! I'm glad you can fuel your creativity off of mine — and best of hope playing the music you want to perform, Denis.

(I gotta use "Happy pianoing!" more, I like that expression. Mind if I do, Daed?)

  22. Daedalus Young Says:

That's no problem of course, you enriched our vocabulary with expressions like Yayzerama and Friendly greetings (which I often use in e-mails, it's a good sign for the recipient you mean it well). :D

  23. Zach Morgan Says:

I think it is great that someone can post such great music online…
    sorry about your hearing…

  24. Torley Says:

@Zach: My ears have gotten more resilient over time, I gotta keep going… and thanks for the kind comment. :)

  25. Epiphanyness Says:

This piece is amazing, is there a lossless version (such as FLAC/APE/anything) available?

  26. Torley Says:

@Epiphanyness: Whoa, what a moniker you have. Sadly no, I don't have that available for download. I did have the original .WAV somewhere, but I haven't seen it in a long time. Your interest is appreciated.

  27. Shelby Says:

I have to say that I absolutely love your music. It's freakin' awesome. As a musician myself, I know how frustrating it can be to try and make beautiful music, but you're great at it. Keep up the good work!

  28. Torley Says:

    @Shelby: Why thank-you!

  29. Tyler Says:

This brought back such good memories, I thank you for that. I especially remember Bubble Bobble… classic.

  30. Torley Says:

@Tyler: You're welcome! I must've played Bubble Bobble for hours on end with my bro… I loved the parts where the giant fruit comes down, especially the watermelon!

  31. Flash Says:

Yes, this Flash Flash Revolution thing really seems to have taken off lately. I have been noticing its popularity just by looking at my search query stats.

A few months ago, I published an FFR-related article on my blog that has attracted a surprising amount of traffic from Google. The funny part is that when I clicked through to see where my article was ranked, it was only showing up at #16 in Google, yet I was getting around 20-40 hits per day just to that one page.

About two weeks ago, Google apparently dropped the page into their supplemental index and I am no longer receiving traffic to it (with the exception of a few hits from Yahoo and MSN), but it might be interesting to see how many hits I can bring in if I actually get some backlinks to the page and bring it back up in the rankings.

(sorry for the double post - previous comment had the wrong URL text - please delete the first one)

@Flash: Intriguing observation, and thanks for sharing it! I like your Gravatar too — Monty Python and crushing ignorance, what a combo!
