Overcome
Posted on: November 21, 2007Life and Second Life sometimes moves by too quickly. Then, I look back, and can make more sense of things… that didn't make sense at the time.
Remember when First Look: WindLight was still being internally worked on and we hadn't re-released it to our community yet? Those were the months where I took 1000s of pictures, many of which ended up posted for the world to see — some were casually-sent postcards, others were sets including post-processed images like this and that, and throughout it all, I was repeatedly called a "WindLight tease". That, I won't play down, nor will I forget it. (Nor do I regret it.)
I was in a unique position both personally and professionally to share what I was involved with. The guys in Team WindLight are incredible, and at the base of it, I'm a fan of their work. WindLight's just been updated today, so do yourself good and download it.
I haven't taken so many WindLight piccies since the FL came out again. I'm content to browse streams of incredible inworld photos as seen through the eyes of others, and sit back & relax. My work, some of it at least, is done, and now, work-wise, I've been focusing on triaging hot WindLight bugs in the Issue Tracker.
But, I do want to capture more: I've been roused to do some panoramas, so if the mood strikes me fancy, that's what I'll do this holiday weekend.
For as much as I write down (and I do recommend it), there's a lot of floating ideas that haven't been committed yet.
I was browsing Fashion World of SL, and thought: I see outfits assembled out of multiple creators' works — Mundo SL has many great examples — and it's so time-consuming to hunt for each piece at its respective location. I wish I could easily click an "Buy Bundle" button and have the whole works delivered to me in a single folder.
Second Life needs more bundle deals.
Sometimes, I sit still and remember a time before I ever got involved with this Second Life business. It seems so very near, and yet, so very far away.
Also, I'm posting a Tip of the Week on the OLB tomorrow: I know it's Thanksgiving, but that doesn't excuse me from wanting to help.
So: may you discover new things about yourself, may you have the courage to share them with someone who cares, and may you collect contentment in the most unlikely of places.

We called you a tease but in a kind way. You did a wonderful job of keeping us up to date with how the project was progressing, a thing that other companies might not have done. You made sure or anticipation was high and the end result was something that was worth the wait! Keep up the good work, Torley

haha yes it was *torture* for some of us, seeing all those beautiful pics from you Torley, realising the product was so close to another 'First Look' but just out of our grasp. Thus the 'tease' comments. You did such a terrific job of maintaining a high level of interest and anticipation for this product.. and it's great to see you, and now so many other talented SL photographers, really pushing the artistic possibilities of this new 'First Look'.
My only fear now is that once this 'First Look' testing phase is complete, it will be taken away again! Or do you expect it will go straight into the regular viewer after testing? Please please pretty please!?
Well done Torley, you continue to inspire with your skill, enthusiasm, dedication, and your openness.

@Nina: I want to assure you I understood you meant it in a "kind way", I just wanted to reference being called a "WindLight tease" because I'm appreciative *you noticed*! So, I'm grateful, and gotta emphasize that. Thank you so much.
@Simondo: Time to time during the months that WindLight was non-public, I'd be reading web articles about "vaporware" like Duke Nukem Forever, and I was like, "Cripes, I don't want that to befall WL!" I know some projects @ LL have taken a loooong time, so I wanted to continue showing our community that work indeed continues (as witnessed by the graphical progress like the sparkly, shining water that was added during a later phase).
And barring horrible and unforeseen circumstances, we have *no* intentions to take WindLight away. We want to mature the First Look, develop the server-side integration, get WL into a Release Candidate, and then get it into the main viewer. May this clarify our path, and thanks for believing in us!
