Play YouTube Mobile videos directly in Second Life

2007-06-20

Got this tip from Callum Linden:

the new You Tube mobile site uses an MPEG4 codec via an RTSP stream that is supported by QuickTime and therefore plays in Second Life right now

So how do you do it?

  • Go to YouTube Mobile @ m.youtube.com. Note it has a very limited subset of all YouTube videos, so chances are you may not find what you want to play inworld. Still, it's worth a try.

  • Browse around, then click on a video to expand it.

  • Right-click a "Watch Video" link and copy it. It should begin with "rtsp://". For example, rtsp://rtsp.youtube.com/youtube/videos/JzqumbhfxRo/video.3gp

  • In Second Life on a parcel of land that you own or can change the media URLs on, go to About Land > Media tab and paste the URL in the "Media texture" section. Make sure you have a unique media texture setup as a "movie screen" so you can watch it.

  • Push play on the Movies control and watch the fun begin! (If you don't see it, make sure streaming video is turned on in Edit menu > Preferences > Audio & Video tab.)

The quality ain't that good, but as the expression goes, it's "cheap and cheerful". You may also wanna see: "How to convert YouTube videos for playing in Second Life".

Wow, the mobile version of YouTube rocks.

Why can't more websites be like this?

…Well, except for the part where they don't have any of the videos I want.

Fantastic tip, Torley, yay :) This is great! Of course, it means some tweaking to upload a video as a "mobile video", and I think that the quality will suffer a lot, but… it's for free :-D

Having lots of issues always to set quickly up a video streaming site for use in SL with enough bandwidth, I think this will be a rather great idea :)

Thanks for pointing this out to us :)

@Crissa: Yeah, as I've noted elsewhere, I hope YouTube expands their mobile selection, or that eventually, all videos on the site will be H.264-encoded, because that's both hi-quality and QuickTime-compatible.

@Gwyneth: That's a lot of smiles in a short comment! :) You're welcome, and props to Callum of course, I'm just the deliverator of good news. :D

Aw, I just found out that you can't upload videos in the mobile format. What a pity! Specially because this is real streaming, not the crash-prone progressive download…

I can't seem to get blip.tv to work for me, so I guess I'm stuck with Google Video. Ah well. It's still far better than my own limited access to low-end and low-cost streaming servers :)

Blip.tv works just fine for me, as it allows to stream quicktime videos, any quality you like, they play just fine in SL. Come to my machinima gallery in second life to see a variety of movies. It's in the region "Ochreous".

Torley 2007-07-08 at 7:47 AM UTC

@Gwyneth: What I'm hoping is that YouTube retained all the originally-uploaded video files, so in the future, it can encode them into H.264 format (hi-quality and QuickTime streamable) with a minimum loss of quality.

@Susi: I've used Blip.tv on several occasions before, but found it to be very slow and unresponsive at times. I do like it allows for download of the original, unaltered file, but have a quibble with how it adds numbers after the filename.

Whoops, I meant to write HTC Streaming Media Player

Does this still work? All I get is an endless Quicktime loading screen whenever I try to play a mobile youtube stream in world (including using the example above).

I haven't had a chance to try this more recently… can anyone else confirm?

Zante 2007-12-13 at 7:49 AM UTC

None of these methods work anymore. Neither youtube mobile or blip.tv : [

@Zante: I've been looking at other YouTube (FLV)-to-QuickTime-playable converters, like http://www.zamzar and one I found out about today, http://www.convertdirect.com/ — how do those work for you?

What does it mean when you get the Quicktime Logo instead of a movie?

@Hotspur: Repro steps to see that? I haven't seen it yet.

Playing Playlists 2009-01-12 at 1:04 AM UTC

Hi There,

I have a nokia e65 with Youtube uploaded on it. It works fine when watching my Video's but I am trying to select the "Play All" option on the playlists, but it doesn't seem like the "Mobile Version" of Youtube has that funcion; does anyone perhaps know how to bypass that, as I don't want to have to manually start everything song.

Thanks
J

Hi Torley, I am finishing my Masters in dance and video in Second Life in a few weeks and desperate to get my some, 30 dance videos on YouTube working in Second Life again. The bookmarklets dont work anymore and I have been searching for updates of any new bookmarklets or rays of hope to get this facility working in-life again. Can you give me a current update 24.9.09 please? I would really appreciate it! My final exam is soon and I have to be able to bring those videos in to my Wellington Railway Station on the island of Koru!!!!!

Best, Mike/Rollo
