Pre-weekend ruminations
Posted on: May 19, 2007I only watch one TV show regularly at present, and that's Heroes. Why I don't watch more can be chalked up to a lack of time and a lack of desire. But I've really been enjoying Heroes' mytharc, and am looking forward to the big season finale this Monday. I tend to get inspired by champions of time travel, and that makes Hiro Nakamura my fave character. He looks kind of like my little brother, who's also into anime, and oh, making lovely filters.
I recently went to see my bro, and I hadn't been at his place in over 3 years. (Yes, a long time.) So we had lots of sushi (mmmm) and we watched a couple of parody movies: (1) Epic Movie was OK but leaning towards lame, because characters broke into ill-fitting, MTV-styled song-and-dance too often and that relates to a number of hideously blunt and boring sequences that dragged out toooo long; (2) Scary Movie 4 was much better. I'm a fan of Anna Faris, and have watched — and enjoyed — all the Scary Movies. One of the best parts was The Village spoof of "those of whom we do not/don't speak".
All in all, we had a smashing time.
I've also been reading David Allen's Getting Things Done, which is confirming a number of principles I came up independently — always comforting to know your techniques are shared and work well for other people. For example, Allen scribes:
There is no reason ever to have the same thought twice, unless you like having that thought.
Which is effectively a strike against useless redundancy, something I've abhored for ages. What I've learned has led me to delete stale Gmail filters and reorg a number of my processes. Taking a little time upfront to organize yourself can save you cumulative hours down the line. It's amazing what you can get done in 1/2 an hour if you really focus, and when I'm in a certain "mode", say going through email or triaging on the Issue Tracker, I don't like to be sidetracked. Prob for me is, I'm constantly spinning out tangents or being sent stuff to check out, so I use Google Desktop to jot notes quickly to get to later — it's part of Allen's philosophy of emptying all you need to do out of your head so you can get a clear, big-picture view of actionables. I group things together to do in "burst mode", e.g., thank-yous and followup for coworkers, vids on YouTube and other URLs to check out, and cleaning up my computer's filesystem.
So, due to lots of work busy-ness and other happenings in my lives, I haven't been blogging that much lately, but I'm hoping this weekend, I can catch up on the long queue of Second Life landmarks I've been sent. I'm finding there's never enough time to get to it all, or even most of it, but at least there's such a rich array of choices to pick from.
I'd also like to get to more self-reviews of my music, I haven't done one in, like, 3 weeks!
