Second Life cool tools mix for 2008-09-05

Posted on: September 5, 2008

I get cool tools suggested to me from various sources, including my contact form and in my vast surfing of SL-stuffs 'round tha Intarwebs. Some of it comes to me directly from the creators, others are from avid fans — if you find any of this useful + fun, say thankya to the makers, and spread the word onwards. That's how we prosper here!

Second Links - I appreciate a fine headline aggregator, and use popurls a lot. I've also played with AllTop, and from Kate Amdahl comes this clean collection of suggested sites to visit. Useful at-a-glance, and of particular interest to me is the News section, which is a simple and straightforward headline layout. I hope you'll discover some new sites of intrigue outta here, and if your faves are missing, as mentioned onsite, let Kate know.

MP3 Nibbler - You can't upload whole songs into Second Life because of the 10-sec. cap, but there's that workaround to split lengthier sounds into chunks and play them back using a script. If you don't have previous sound-editing skills, the MP3 Nibbler makes it a lot easier. Since you can set the split size time, it has uses outside of Second Life, too. Windows-only.

GIF 2 SL Animation - I've long been a fan of Peregrine Salon's SL anim creator, which does all its magic on the web. It hasn't been updated in awhile tho, and if you seek an alternative, there's this Windows app by Gonta Maltz: one advantage is it's better at handling transparency, and it's how I created my neon Mega Man.

Oracolo Janus' Droste experiment - Not strictly a tool in itself, but you gotta see…

I think Oracolo is the 1st Resident to do this (I haven't seen any others yet), based on Josh Sommers' tutorial. I have a big interest when tuts not originally designed for SL are used to great effect (indeed, a prior example would be my panoramas).

Have fave tools you've come across? Tidy lil' utilities that fill a niche need or more general applications? Lemme know!

Hello! I just found a cool tool - but its probly bee around for ages (not like me). Its the Time Zone Buddy by Foo Foden. I wanted to go to a particular class at NCI on water textures but could nto get my head around SL time versus my time (I'm 19 hours ahead and for some reason my brain REFUSES to compute this!) Anyway I go the Time Zone Buddy and Foo came and helped me set it up which was very kind of him, and it really is cool because it has a little drone that comes out and collects info from your friends (with their permission of course!) and adds that to a list of buddies so i can see at a glance where my friends are at timewise. It also has reminders (which is what I wanted) and another good thing is it that could be customised to express time in my language! We use DDMMYY here. So it is my fav gadget of the week.

@feeli0: Good to hear about Time Zone Buddy, especially because Second Life is becoming increasingly international and "chrono-translation" can help a bundle. Great stuff!

Hi Torley, I had to change some settings for my images and I think that broke your link to the image, both here and in the post about droste in SL.
Sorry for that. I hope you can fix the opsts to show again the images.
