Second Life sound effects – fresh from the UI!

2006-11-02

Now and then, I've heard requests for Second Life's user interface sound effects. You know: the valiant *swoooosh* and subtle jangle that kicks in every time you teleport, the thuddy *bonk* when you collide with a prim, and even the awkward pains of exceeding the damage threshold in a combat zone. And you can't forget the bass-ripping moving-of-earth whenever you, gentle avatar, rez a new prim!

They're here, courtesy of Ryan Linden who made them wayyyy back in the day — if you find any missing, post in the comments, and if you've got a recording, send it to me so we can have it included.

BTW, don't even think of using the incoming IM sound to play spatial tricks with innocent bystanders — it's already done before! :)

Do you know how weeeird that is? Only yesterday did I record all the interface sounds, so I can mix em up for an intro for our forthcoming podcast :P

I just found my old copies of Rebirth and Acid :D

ooowoooowww! these are the actual files! cool! You just saved me the job of editing the huge file I have here!

Koz, I wanna share something with you: your personality rocks, what I’ve experienced of it thus far, and you remind me of a very dear uncle of mine with your exuberance. My family says in some ways I’m a chip off the block from him, so maybe that’s why I relate so well to your innovations and style.

Enjoy those sounds — by all means, let me know when your forthcoming podcast’s up (or let me know where to subscribe) so I can enjoy it. I’m gonna show Ryan Linden too, he’d get a kick out of it.

YAYZERAMA!

My dad used to be quite techie for IBM, Memorex, etc..

I say I’m a silicon chip off the old block! :)

Nanaki, I hope you weren’t too cruel. ;)

Koz, sounds like you’re continuing a proud family tradition.

Okay, I was on the subway in London yesterday and I use the incoming IM for my messages on my mobile. I got a Twitter, lord knows how in the subway but there ya go, and the girl next to me jumped! Turns out she’s been in SL as long as I have and we got chatting. Turns out we both know Caledon and a few of the same people. We got off at the same stop. We swapped business cards. I’ll let ya know how it goes. Nice one Torley, good chance I’ll owe ya one there ;-)

Heehee, that’s cool, Nikk! Would be odd to find your’re sitting next to an SL friend without knowing :P

@Nikk: Sounds like an awesome encounter. I enjoy when serendipity happens like that… and I sure wanna hear the followup!

What are the license restrictions on these sounds?

Chris Hansen 2009-06-03 at 6:14 PM UTC

The teleport sound is the exact teleport sound from the Bethesda RPG Daggerfall.
