Send snapshots directly from SL to Flickr with SL2Flickr!
Posted on: November 19, 2006I'd like to hand a big hearty helping of THANK YOU GRACIOUSLY to Kisa Naumova, who invented SL2Flickr and solved a problem I've been having a long time: sending pictures directly from Second Life to Flickr. I detest the wasted time that comes with intermediary steps, and embrace spontaneity. Also, as I use Flickr more, I appreciate the hi-rez imagery I can store. This is part of my ongoing train of thought on SL photography, which culminated in many snapshots thanx to Cristiano Midnight's Snapzilla, and continues forth as I experiment with the twin pillars of:
and I'm confident down the road will see me going retro.
But today, now, SL2Flickr exists, and continues to be developed by Kisa — note the website may load slowly, she knows about it! You'll need to go there to complete the easy registration process. Then, in Second Life, just click the toolbar's "Snapshot" button > select "Send a postcard", and click "Send". "Recipient's Email" = "sl2flickr@eyefood.co.uk". You may want to see "How do I use Snapzilla?", the principles are the same.
Remember, you can enter multiple recipients separated by a comma. To send to Snapzilla and SL2Flickr, "Recipient's Email" = "x@slpics.com, sl2flickr@eyefood.co.uk". After clicking the "Send" button, wait a few seconds, then check the respective sites and voila!
(That's me @ Kisa's gallery, pressing Ctrl-8 six times. Wish I could get the Flickr code for a range of photos without having to click through each one three times from its placement on the Your Photos page.)
Results handily include the SLurl for easy linkage, and a few appropriate tags in the coordinates.
In addition to SL2Flickr's own progress, I'm looking forward to future snapshot developments, including a Linden fixing the bug that limits SL-sent postcards to 640×480, no matter how big you specify 'em. Changing "Image Quality" also has no effect yet… I remain hopeful.

I'd thought of using email, but had thought I would have to convert to BMP (hey, why not JPG?) to upload. I screwed up one upload and was surprised. Using 'upload by email' is also possible with Flickr by sending postcards…

SL crashes on me when I try and send a postcard.
And, yes, I've filed a bug report, RT #477055.

Heh, it crashes for me too if I try and do anything before SL's finished uploading the postcard. I just leave it be and make a brew while it's doing its stuff

Direct access in sending my snapshots really means a lot to me. Intermediary processes reduce the joyful spontaneity of the craft.
Historically, when lining up multiple snapshots, I've crashed if I click "Discard" on the Snapshot Preview dialog while another one is being sent…

Thank you for the mention, Torley. I wanted to let you know that Snapzilla now supports sending images to Flickr, including tags, both when sending the image in and for existing images on the site. The feature is in testing right now and should be available on Friday, Nov 24th. You simply fill in your Flickr email upload address on the site, and then you can send any snapshot you want to also go to Flickr to flickr@slpics.com. You can send existing pictures using an option on the picture detail page. I'll announce it on the site and in the forums when it is ready.

Ano, that's wonderfulicious! I haven't used it yet but thanx for the info… very, very exciting times! Thanx for letting me know.
I continue to believe the preservation of Second Life history is underdone, and rejoice in every insightful opportunity to do so.
