i dont want to spoil the fun and let friendly Torley explain it to you how it works later on, but as the additional patch files needed are very hard to find i have uploaded them to Rapidshare. Use this Link to download the files.
Be sure to read the included how_to_activate_shadows.txt and dont forget to backup the files modified by the patch. ( I backed up my whole Shaders folder and the settings.xml )
I have tested it on the RC 1.20 RC 9 and it works. But as you can see in the attached .jpg the shadows are some kind of grainy … but anyhow this is a huge step in a good direction .. btw .. I have a (SLI) Nvidia 8800 GTX with 750 MB and currenty using the 174.74 Nvidia WHQL Driver.
Hail and praise Vittorio Beerbaum
(and Vittorio .. dont get mad on me for uploading it to rapidshare
but all links i found where dead or not working.. )
I have tried this client myself and it is great, only things that are needed I think are wider graphic cards support, particles and invisiprims fix, and a solution for the water. Also, if this option is just optional, and adjustable, like, set avatars only shadows, set all objects shadows, distance shadows are rendered at, etc. Also, most people seem to buy 8800 GT's or ATI 3870's or something. I believe this feature could be accepted by most people of Secondlife with open arms. As long it's optional, like, a setting in the preferences menu, it should be ok.
@Ami: I'm sorry I can't, as I'm using internal viewers provided by Linden Lab dev. But, some Residents have created patches and compiled their own viewers (try at your own risk but OS innovation is kewl!).

This is awesome indeed… it really adds to the realism. (Surrealism?) Here's hoping we see this added soon.

EMPHASIS THAT SHADOWS ARE EXPERIMENTAL
Eventually, I wish they'll be more widely available in a number of ways. But that is not something I know about … yet.
Options for toggling/control TBD too.

Hey Torley, can you provide an url to the shadowed viewer for us?
Cheers,
Ami
