SLamen breaks for the masses
Posted on: November 16, 2006Microshower sequence complete…
Menno Ophelia, by way of his person and his blog, How's Your World?, has a lot of eclecticism going on. When he posts, it's filled with gold nuggets, if not latinum bars. As many of you know, my ex-life was that of a techno music producer, mining audio gems heavily. Well, his latest entry, "Slampled?", is one of my fave blog posts in recent memory, bridging the venerable Amen Break with the creative processes in Second Life.
My latest sighting — er, sounding of the Amen Break? In Squarepusher's "Hello Meow", harkening back to the melodic, early-morning, acid rush of Big Loada. Wowza, he can sure play bass. The chopped-up rhythm underpinning the whole pluck-and-circumstance is, just like I found in another YouTube video…
Second Life sort of has its own audio equivalents to the Amen Break, albeit more replication than remix: think of that fountain sound that's pitched up about an octave too high. (Words suck, it's good I have audio, eh?) Presumably due to an unintentional resampling fault that wasn't caught early on, and free fountain after fountain has been chirpily looping on ever since.
There are at least three other very popular "SLamen Breaks" I can name, used on parcel after parcel: the birds, the fire, and more water. Yeah, if you have a big smile on your face right now, you've heard 'em!
I heartily encourage creative souls to take these, twist them into something that suits your personality, and reuploading them back into Second Life. Spin on a classic. Put 'em on your parcel to create your own audio signature, and send me the coords.

Torley, I'm pretty sure there's a runic emblem from Silent Hill on the table behind you. Coincidence!?!

Tony, definitely intentional as far as I know — the creators of that church did it based on Silent Hill! I've never played any of the games but I like the atmospherics I've seen, and the creative monster design.
