Snow comes and so do the memories…

Posted on: November 22, 2006

I find myself seeing shorter days as we head into winter here; I feel like the ValueTales' Abe Lincoln, on page 33 where he's nestling in bed with his loving squirrel friend. That means I want to be under a feather mattress, or better yet, a quilt formed from scenes of my many happy experiences. I kinda dread snowfall, it's not a good time to be driving. Black ice is terrifying. I remember one time, my Dad was driving us home, and we skidded off the pavement and happened to have our fall broken by some trees on the side of the road. It could have been much, much worse.

I also recall a memory of when my Dad was driving us back after we had just bought my Alesis QS8 synthesizer. At something like Cdn$3099, it cost a pretty pound. But the music I made out of it, that winter, and in the years to come — would all be a lasting part of who I became. It was fortunate, because I'm convinced the durable lug (almost 50 pounds) contributed to our vehicle scarily slipping down the steep, unembellished incline which was our driveway.

I wonder sometimes if it's worthwhile to trawl through my collection of 230 MP3s — and maybe even some other ones — and tell the stories of how I came to compose them through blog posts. Perhaps a timely retrospective, 'cause come early 2007, it'll have been a full decade since I got that synth. I've always enjoyed a good story behind a song, for without those stories, great music doesn't stand a chance of being.

(pink and green, over 10 years in the making…)

For the last few years on those cold winter nights, I've seen, in my dreams: a cabin, stocked with goodies and a full studio, waiting for me to come back. It won't be this winter, and I don't think it'll be the next, but life's held so many surprises already; I'd be remiss to not make the crossing into the dense woods with the silvery lake where this cabin is.

We'll see — or, for that matter, hear.

Retrospective posts would be cool. New music would be even cooler. =)

I'm sure you've found many new influences and sources of inspiration since you last composed.

I completely agree with Josh, new music would be cool, but the stories behind the music is what would be truly awesome…

Thanx for the support, Josh and CoryK. :) The reason of course why I'm not making new music is my hyperacusis; sure, I can play out piano tunes and do ambient in a limited capacity, but it's like having no fingers to grasp the food I want to eat. Frustrating because it comes in waves — life goes on!

As a side note: My wife is going to hate you… I am on Second Life now, and I think I'm going to try and convince her to let me get a premium account… Also, why do I have you calling card? You weren't even on when I joined…

Treat yourself gently if you do decide to go back and revisit. Sometimes it's as wonderful as the best you can remember and you wonder why you ever stopped, and sometimes it makes you think Tantalus has it easy.

That´s funny I always loved the music but I never linked the music with the the Watermerlinden.

CoryK, if you signed up for Second Life via one of the links on my site or otherwise entered me as a referred, it automatically includes my calling card. Hehe sounds like you're having a good time.

Storm, thanx for the encouragement. :)

jrrdraco, I love exploring many a field, and there was a time where I thought I couldn't live without music — I am more visual-centric now; however, life has so many senses to explore. :)
