Instant Messages: I get a lot of them.

Presently, there isn't more in the way of status control in Second Life. Not an easy way for me to refer to an archive and reply to IMs later unless they were sent to me when offline.

I tend to crash and relog a lot. So, I end up losing instant messages, as they don't persist across sessions. I crash even more when I'm testing some bugs out, and sometimes I am a serious lagmagnet. (Which is what makes me an "enduser Linden"—I've come across so many of the common, and not-so-common problems!)

Know I take this personally; it matters to me. I know it matters firsthand to a lot of Lindens.

Please also know I'm often inworld and localized: think of it as going to church and turning off your cellphone. Since IMs can always be sent, we can't effectively quiet our "cellphones" in SL, but I tend to get very hyperfocused in my immediate surroundings. Sometimes I'm helping at a meeting, or attending an event, or… crashing/relogging again.

Wish there was an easier way to communicate this, like: if you IM me during localization, a little live picture of what I'm doing comes up. I wouldn't mind being broadcast on an inworld "cam" (SLinema?) to share more about myself. Or, not so elaborate, a (Busy) mode that doesn't reject inventory offers! 'Cuz I know I get sent nifty things, and sometimes they're sent without a corresponding IM, and they get sent to the trash right away—gives a very rude impression, which is totally not what I'm about.

I did end up updating my profile after all:

::: I'm the watermelon spirit on the LL Community Team :D :::

(I'm often localized working inworld, so if you IMed and didn't get a reply, please email torley@lindenlab.com)

i am happy 2 help u with: exploring the grid, online expressions, the SL Forums, communicating your hopes+dreams to Lindens, & CREATIVE CHAOS!

—-> Expect encouragement, avatar-to-avatar conversation, whimsy, and inspiration like only a hot pink and neon green muse can do… I watch over our Residents!

 "I connect you."

I'm not big into text-only IM, but I'm deeply aware of how some of these very basic "status controls" would benefit us greatly. I prefer to: 1) meet someone inworld if I can, 2) email correspondence, and 3) Instant Messaging, in that order.

So yes. If I didn't reply to your IM, I apologize. And like it says, if you IMed and didn't get a reply, please, please email torley@lindenlab.com (that's me)! Good vibes for being terse (not tense) yet elaborately informative and funny, 'cuz that's what I strive to be too. I do want to get back to you. :D
