The Fringe Equation: new piano performance of THAT theme

2008-12-05

"DAMNIT! Must you always be such a smartass?" -Walter Bishop

Sometimes, it's necessary! Following a certain fun video, I had a few requests from the nice folks @ Fringe Forum to do a MP3 version. I figured this would be intense and focused, without my yammering (altho that's nice on occasion too). Also, an opportunity to include the piano theme from "The Equation" which I hadn't done previously. (Yes, the left-hand ostinatos are pure Philip Glass. :p)

This would would also give me an opportunity to learn how to make music on my Mac Pro a little better — I just installed Native Instruments Komplete 5 + Kore 2 (13 DVDs total!), and while you only hear a piano here, it's a very nice piano, from the Akoustik virtual instrument. (If I didn't tell you, would you know?) Have a listen to "The Fringe Equation"… la de dah…

And it gets all crazy Rachmaninoff stylee at the end.

I can relate to Dr. Walter Bishop in a number of ways. Not just the overall veneer of eccentricity, but my wife prompted me that she sometimes needs to ask me questions in certain ways to get an answer that makes sense.

MY HERO! I took this picture from a Hulu screengrab and marked on it with Skitch. Very, very fun.

Walter!

I'm still learning the Mac side of things, and final mastering of this piano performance was done on Sony Vegas in Windows, but I'm hoping to get to a workflow which is all- (or more-) Mac and works well for me. But… whatever tools work best, yes?

Love it! Consider me a fan.

Torley 2008-12-06 at 1:31 PM UTC

@Caroline: Welcome! *big smile*

Alexis 2008-12-07 at 10:00 AM UTC

I dub thee almighty.

Dave Arter 2008-12-07 at 12:57 PM UTC

Torley, words cannot express how happy I am that you're writing/recording music again.
I was a huge fan back in the days of "A New Piano", "The Favor of God", etc, back when mp3.com was actually good. Glad to see you overcame your difficulties that rendered everything painful to listen to.
Yay Torley!

Dani 2008-12-07 at 11:15 PM UTC

It has been a very long time since I have listened to piano music simply to listen to it, not as noise to keep my head from exploding while I work. This is quite beautiful. I don't know who you are but thanks for something wonderful.

Fraser 2008-12-09 at 2:10 PM UTC

I adore this song, have been searching for ages to find this, just wondering do you have a midi version of this, so that I could open it in Sibelius and view it as sheet music?

Thanks,
Fraser

dude im not into piano but after listening to this i actually wanted to learn how to play lol great job men

Dvyjones 2008-12-11 at 12:30 PM UTC

I just love your songs! Could you please post some notes / sheets for this (the whole thing will be a lot of job, but the main themes would be fun to learn)

Zatt 2008-12-11 at 8:35 PM UTC

I second Dvyjones, please post some sheets man! It's awesome!

Torley 2008-12-12 at 3:36 PM UTC

@Dave: Holy moly! I'm glad you remember those originals. I'm getting back into music… slowly.

Pardon, I don't have sheet music for this, but… I do show some of the notes @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dz-uI5CsdY&feature=channel_page :)

THANK YOU for listening and liking!

Cytrique 2008-12-15 at 1:39 PM UTC

Oh my God ! You finished the equation ! = )
When i discovered your video on youtube i directly clicked the link to see if you made the equation part.
GREAT SURPRISE !
And now i have the theme song AND the "equation" in the same file. Joyfull!

PS: I LOVE the "equation" part… No words to describe such melody… I keep rewinding over and over again !
If you can compose the same kind of "mood", i'll be your best fan !
(I sincerly hope you'll try ^^)
To sum up : thanks alot

Joe dirt 2008-12-16 at 9:41 PM UTC

i listened to your youtube vid for one hour i love the song really good
to me fringe is like the new x files

Torley 2008-12-19 at 6:14 PM UTC

I <3 the "Equation" tune too... *hums it*

Thanks, very nice to hear from you! And Cytrique, I do have some similar piano music in that "mood" here: http://torley.com/piano

Cytrique 2008-12-27 at 2:30 PM UTC

Where to discuss the "http://torley.com/piano" compositions?
I have to say :
162- Sadness of the art.
My third click and… love
Like they say in my country : "Un vrai chef d'œuvre"
I'll take the time, one day, to listen all of them.
Waiting to get bored of n°162 first xD

jojo56 2008-12-30 at 10:41 PM UTC

OMG!! this is soo awesome but NAMES NAMES please im begging for any names or alias or anything that might lead to help my cause

Torley 2009-01-01 at 10:01 AM UTC

@Cytrique: Perfectly fine to discuss them here! Thank you, merci!

@jojo56: Which names?

My sweet tooth is...Walter! 2009-01-03 at 10:56 PM UTC

You better write the sheet musicc to this!!

Isn't there a program where you can play a song and it will transfer it to sheet music??

My sweet tooth is...Walter! 2009-01-03 at 11:03 PM UTC

Lol when i downloaded it my mediaplayer made a psychidelic video with all the swirling colors and lines and all that-so awesome! Did you make all the extra stuff by urself???

Torley 2009-01-09 at 11:37 AM UTC

@My sweet tooth is…Walter!: I think that's your media player's own visualizer. There are some programs for converting MIDI data into standard notation, but they require a lot of editing to make the output legible, especially when you play as crazy as I do… LOL.

esú 2009-01-21 at 3:07 PM UTC

I come from your Youtube video just to say that it is just amazing. Awesome. Great work, I love it :D

Torley 2009-01-23 at 10:47 AM UTC

Thank youuuuuuuu!

je_suis_sortie 2009-01-25 at 8:42 PM UTC

okay. i've been following fringe ever since it started. and i remember LOVING "the equation." but when i watched it again with mon amour today, i became as obsessed with the song as ben, and as dashell with the equation.

i've been looking for some form of mp3 of it for HOURS.

i also REALLY like the main theme, for the same reason (minor keys captivate me, especially when done in such an eerie way. i made my own harmony for charlotte's web as a kid, too. and, though i can't truly PLAY piano, i can play charlotte's web without looking at the keys x])

from one music lover to another (hehe. rhyme) fantastic work.

no.

really.

it's quite fantastical. in a VERY good way.

Fringeling 2009-01-26 at 6:29 PM UTC

Dude —- I am so grateful for this —– you totally rock. You should get with David Wu (Fringemonks) and make an album ……….

Rainbow 2009-01-28 at 11:36 AM UTC

Dude, you're a fucking genius

Torley 2009-01-31 at 7:52 AM UTC

@je_suis_sortie: Oh yay thanks! :D

@Fringeling: Woot woot. Yeah Fringemonks are SO funny. I wonder what the collab would be called… ;)

@Rainbow: I'm glad to have this brought to my attention!

Dude 2009-02-01 at 10:18 AM UTC

What is the name of this piece and it's writer?

Merci :)

Torley 2009-02-08 at 2:05 PM UTC

@Dude: Originally it's JJ Abrams' and "Fringe Theme". But it's strongly Philip Glass-like. http://torley.com/was-the-fringe-theme-strongly-influenced-by-night-stalker ;)

Taufique 2009-02-12 at 10:31 AM UTC

Torley,

This is just absolutely beautiful. I saw the youtube video first, and I was already wondering what you were using. Native Instruments ey, nice!

Gosh I wish i knew how to play the piano.

Olivia 2009-02-12 at 3:32 PM UTC

I was looking around for sheet music of the theme, and I somehow ended up here… this is absolutely gorgeous! I love it. Thank you! :)

(I also love the variation on The X-Files theme at about 3:32… genius!)

Torley 2009-02-15 at 8:37 AM UTC

@Taufique: Yeah, Native Instruments' Akoustik has some very nice piano sounds. Thanks for commenting!

@Olivia: I hope someone does a sheet music transcription. I <3 transitioning between theme music.

You are MOST welcome.

Nick 2009-02-19 at 5:14 PM UTC

Thank you!!! This is greattt!!

Kevin 2009-02-21 at 5:32 PM UTC

If possible, could you do a sheet transcription Torley?

I would be MOST grateful!

Chris 2009-02-27 at 5:47 AM UTC

hey! umm jw but who is the original writer of the Equation theme? I know JJ composed the Fringe theme.

Thanks!!!

Torley 2009-02-27 at 2:31 PM UTC

@Kevin: I would but I have limited knowledge of standard notation. I'll entrust the transcription to someone more talented than I, but thanks for your enthusiasm.

@Chris: I presume it's Michael Giacchino, but haven't had specific confirmation on that.

Cheyenne 2009-02-28 at 4:52 PM UTC

This is so beautiful. I have been looking for a download for a long time.

Wonderful job, I love the incorporation of the title sequence, some basic themes from the show, and the piano equation in Ep. 8.

Beautiful job, I'm astonished. :)

Bleda 2009-03-04 at 2:40 PM UTC

It is just very, very and very beatiful. I have searched for hours before finding this. Thank you. It would be even better if we could also download music sheet for this epic piece too.

Torley 2009-03-06 at 5:31 PM UTC

=^_^=

I can't wait for Fringe to get back on-air with new eps!

SAMAD 2009-03-16 at 8:27 AM UTC

Wow.

i just love it. Each time i listen… each time i like it even more… Amazing, really.

Great work. Continue… lol

kiss.

Andrew 2009-04-18 at 11:45 PM UTC

OMG, very beautiful around three minutes in.

The creators of Fringe should put this in one of their episodes!

Flávio 2009-04-19 at 3:32 PM UTC

Hey man, that's a wonderful song that you wrote. But I like the video version better than this one. I don't know why. Just do…
I guess that because you put the variations more clear and distant it sounded better to me. If you could record it into an mp3 file or so I guess lots of us would be very appreciate although this version also is fabulous.

Thank you for making my day better

piana 2009-04-27 at 6:14 AM UTC
