The Games We Played on Flash Flash Revolution

2006-12-05

I believe the best part of what I'm about to tell you is that it was done in love. Y'see, Rebirth0 decided to take "The Games We Played", my 17-min. piano megamix of classic video game tuneage, and turn it into the uber-ultimatest stepfile on Flash Flash Revolution you've ever experienced.

[PIANO] The Games We Played by Torley

I'm usually shy about superlatives, but not today, because in Rebirth0's own words:

Why would I make such a file? I wanted to make a simfile that matched what I felt towards the girl I love. To do that, I would have to make the perfect simfile. With The Games We Played, I think I did so. There is no other simfile that is like this. She gave me the will to start and finish this simfile. It was an intense two months, but I finished it and the results are outstanding! She is the one person that gave me the ability to do this. Sadly, right now we’re having a little trouble with our relationship. I don’t know what will happen right now, if she’ll leave or if she’ll stay. All I can do now is hope for the best.

THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! <3

He was nice to email me too, and let me know he did this.

The followup, however, is sad:

Well, tonight I found out the truth. Me and her were on a “break” from each other as of two weeks ago. I found out tonight that it wasn’t just a break, it was a complete break up. This sucks…really bad. I put so much time into perfecting TGWP because of her, and she’s probably gone. It almost makes me feel like I wasted my time.

But…I know I didn’t completely waste my time. I know that even if it was or wasn’t made for her, it’s still one of the best simfiles ever made if not the best. I accomplished one of my ultimate goals in this game: to make one of the best simfiles ever.

@Rebirth0: heartbreak hurts, but what you did… lives on. I wish you all the best with this, and you already know how many peeps already enjoy your handiwork. Critical respect to you for doing this, bringing back my good memories of performing the piece, and thanx to Tasselfoot for highlighting it, 'cuz TGWP — in all 1 2 3 4 5 parts — was featured as Song of the Week.

(I only found this out today, because the FFR site was down for me during the last few days.)

Also…

I've received a lotta lovely questions asking me about sheet music for "The Games We Played". Regrettably, I must inform you none exists which I know of — I played it by ear, and it's not been transcribed yet, to my knowledge. Wish I could help you more. If anyone even does a semi-decent stab at a manuscript, I'll be happy to help distro the works. SEE SHEET MUSIC LINK ABOVE! (Updated on 2008-10-25)

Also, I've had inquiries asking about a complete song listing, which games are performed, etc. This is gonna sound curiously negligent of me, but I didn't have that either. Thankfully, Rebirth0 posted a partial song listing here, and I've edited it idiosyncratically in bold:

0:00-1:06 – Metal Gear Solid

1:06-1:55 – Deus Ex

1:55-2:40 – Kirby's Dream Land

2:40-3:22 – A Boy and His Blob

3:22-3:35 – Super Mario Brothers

3:35-5:10 – The Legend of Zelda

5:10-5:54 – Tetris

5:54-6:10 – Super Metroid

6:10-6:55 – Final Fantasy 4 Main Theme

6:55-7:16 – Final Fantasy Fanfare

7:16-7:51 – Final Fantasy Chocobo Theme

7:51-8:19 – Final Fantasy 6 Boss Theme

8:19-9:18 – Simple and Clean (Kingdom Hearts Theme)

9:18-9:48 – Torley's own made-up bridge I

9:48-10:52 – Bubble Bobble

10:52-11:37 – Zombie Nation (from the C64 game Lazy Jones)

11:37-12:03 – Great Gianna Sisters (also Commodore 64)

12:04-12:24 – Popeye (another C64 classik)

12:24-12:42 – Torley's own made-up bridge II

12:42-13:13 – Dragon Warrior (NES)

13:13-13:40 – Secret of Mana (SNES)

13:40-14:17 – Final Fantasy 4 End Theme

14:17-16:08 – Megaman II Flashman's Theme

16:08-17:11 – Final Fantasy Crystal Theme

Wheu.

You'l prolly wanna see the whole "Song of the Week: The Games We Played, ALL PARTS!" thread, started by FFR Overseer Shashakiro, too. Apparently, it contains hundreds of tempo changes, and makes good use of FFR's "new ability to convert BPM changes into FFR's engine."

At a time where I'm finding solace in classic 8-bit pleasures and pulling chunks out of my childhood then catapulting them into the environs of my current state, this is all-too-comforting. Heck, if I close my eyes, I can see myself, in March 2004, lettin' the melodies flow… nostalgia doesn't do me much good, but I'm more than appreciative that many new gamers are discovering TGWP through FFR!

Once more, with so much feeling, thank you graciously for doing this, Rebirth0!

hey! 100 comments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amzy 2008-04-08 at 5:31 PM UTC

Hey where do you downlaod the demon fire song?

Thattagen 2008-04-09 at 8:31 PM UTC

Speaking of transcriptions, I'm going to transcribe Xristospiano. I can already play some of it, and I can get the rest if I'm diligent.

Andy Tran 2008-04-10 at 6:16 PM UTC

Matt, is that you?

Thattagen 2008-04-10 at 6:45 PM UTC

No, this is not Matt.

Andy Tran 2008-04-11 at 4:21 PM UTC

Oh

Thattagen 2008-04-12 at 3:17 PM UTC

Shoot! Finale Notepad only let me do 2 pages!
There goes that project…

Andy Tran 2008-04-13 at 8:00 PM UTC

Actually, you can add measures. I forgot how. I know cuz i added measures in tgwp.

Andy Tran 2008-04-17 at 9:19 PM UTC

This sucks. I couldn't do much since the trial expires. I'm in Final fantasy fanfare….. the fast part.

Amzy 2008-04-20 at 8:55 PM UTC

Jon, are you there?

Jonathan 2008-04-20 at 9:10 PM UTC

yes i am, but i don't like how you are all spamming up this page with no useful stuff :S

Uhh….. are any of you close to being done your parts? I mean.. if I had continued i probably would have finished the song by now…. :(

Amzy 2008-04-21 at 11:03 AM UTC

Uhhhh my computer was down for a while. Don't worry, i got it back.

Amzy 2008-04-21 at 6:56 PM UTC

I'm halfway to part 3, and I'm doing part 4 at the same time. No one's doing part 5 so you can do it if you want…

Dan 2008-07-01 at 8:54 AM UTC

I love playing the 1st part of the games we played and I've mastered the transcription that was posted, but what happened it seems like two months ago everyone just forgot about it?? According to the above comment I'll do my part and give part 5 a shot. Where is everyone??

jonathanasdf 2008-07-01 at 9:33 AM UTC

lol we didn't want to clog up this site comments so we've moved to the ffr forums :D

Uhm andy's done part 4, i'm 1/4 of the way done part 5, Andy should be starting part 3 soon.

Andy's not repying, nor is he sending the part 4 file to me :S so I don't actually know whether he's done or not.

Amzy 2008-07-20 at 8:37 PM UTC

I already started part 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was in Japan btw :D

Amzy 2008-07-26 at 7:01 PM UTC

part 3 srry

Torley 2008-07-27 at 7:20 AM UTC

I'm still anxious about this… I keep getting asked about a transcription so I appreciate your continuing work.

jonathanasdf 2008-07-27 at 9:18 AM UTC

ok torley, a bit of update:

Andy just sent me his part 4, I am incorporating it now
I'm almost done part 5 – 1 minute left… happens to be the last minute… the finale…. and it is annoying to transcribe..
so Amzy i'm waiting for your part 3 xD

good job peoples. It looks like we should be able to pull this off before the end of summer.

Amzy 2008-07-27 at 5:10 PM UTC

You do realize that part 3 is the hardest part overall?

Amzy 2008-07-27 at 5:12 PM UTC

And yeah… I cant do grace notes or change the key sig. so you gotta do that.

Amzy 2008-07-27 at 5:14 PM UTC

Anyway….Monday thru Wednesday I have lotsa time to kill which is kinda unusual in my life so I can work on part 3 more often tomorrow.

Amzy 2008-07-27 at 5:21 PM UTC

You probably want to update the fact that no sheet music exists, Torley. Sorry for all the comments I have all these things to say cuz I've been gone from the computer for such a long time!

Amzy 2008-07-29 at 6:24 PM UTC

HelloOoOoOo……….I'm all alone…………..

Torley 2008-08-03 at 6:21 AM UTC

@Amzy: I see your comments! I've put the info in my FAQ; I'll add a note to the top of this post too. Thx for the reminder!

Jonathanasdf 2008-09-14 at 6:35 PM UTC

Hmm new skin?

Check the FFR thread for newest info I guess.

Brian 2008-09-16 at 8:28 PM UTC

Hey Torley, I just wanted to say that TGWP is one of the best pieces I've even heard.

I was wondering if you were planning on doing a "sequel" or were working on one?

Amzy 2008-09-16 at 8:34 PM UTC

This guy's deaf o.O

No offense Torley

Jonathanasdf 2008-09-16 at 8:42 PM UTC

no need to make it so blunt -__-

You don't know, today's technology is amazing. Maybe something new and revolutionary will come out some time.

Anyways, Beethoven was deaf too… Didn't he still survive and create masterpieces?

Amzy 2008-09-17 at 7:17 PM UTC

Omfg yesterday I had half an hour of transcribing. I decided to fix my decisise battle left hand rythym, because it was screwed up. I got half a second of it in……………………………

Torley 2008-09-20 at 2:34 PM UTC

I'm not deaf, I have hyperacusis though, which makes it harder for me to hear. And my main challenge here is not being hands-on knowledgeable enough about conventional music notation… that's where I appreciate your help, transcribers!

@Brian: Thank you so much. Not planning on doing a sequel, but open to future possibilities.

Amziiiiiiiiiii 2008-09-22 at 12:01 PM UTC

Oh….Sorry….

You know, Torley, transcribing this is insanely hard. If you had a set rythym, I would be done by now xP

Amziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii 2008-09-22 at 12:25 PM UTC

Gawd english is so boring.

Torley 2008-09-28 at 7:24 AM UTC

Hehehe.

narutocloud172 2008-10-20 at 7:26 AM UTC

all i must say is…wow, one of my favorite songs to play on FFR, any plans for a remake? or a second "TGWP"?

Jonathanasdf 2008-10-23 at 11:52 AM UTC

Hey!!! Guess what?!

yep it's out….

Could've been out 3 months earlier… I won't go into any more details…

but here it is:

Over and out.

Torley 2008-10-24 at 6:41 PM UTC

@narutocloud172: No plans at the moment, but the future's open.

@Jonathanasdf: OMG!!!! I'll edit this post to reflect that, and blog about it soon after I have a closer look! :D

Torley 2008-10-24 at 6:41 PM UTC

Thank you ThAnK YoU THANK YOU

Andy Tran 2008-10-26 at 1:22 AM UTC

I guess it's back to reading manga from now on….

Jonathanasdf 2008-10-26 at 9:36 AM UTC

Same here…

Torley 2008-11-01 at 11:28 AM UTC

Have you guys read Johnny Bunko? I thought that was great serious advice in the form of a manga.

Bobby Rhino 2008-11-07 at 1:25 PM UTC

so Torley did you just sit on the piano one day, crack your fingers, turn on the mic and rock this song out off your head? were you sitting on the toilet and said "hmm this is what i'd like my composition to sound like" move to the piano stool and play it out until it sounded right?? i'd really like to know how you composed such a wonderful track!! thank you – you're such a great pianist ^_^

Torley 2008-11-07 at 3:22 PM UTC

@Bobby: Thanx! ^_^ Truth is, I practiced piano for many years in advance, and over time with experience, I became more skilled at (1) improvisation and (2) picking up melodies by ear.

Most of "The Games We Played" melodies were practiced beforehand to some extent, but this end result flowed VERY smoothly. I value spontaneous creation based on prior understanding, and appreciate you asking me!

Bobby Rhino 2008-12-28 at 3:22 PM UTC

Eek, sorry to bother you again but I had one more question :P

Quoting your previous response, you said you said you practiced for "many years in advance". Just wondering how long so I can know what to expect before I might just be able to reach your amount of awesomeness. K thx!! :D

Torley 2009-01-01 at 10:03 AM UTC

@Bobby: Malcolm Gladwell cites a "magic figure" of 10,000 effective hours to be an expert.

I started piano at age 3 and after I was about 12 years old or so, I practiced 3 hrs/day, sometimes 8 hrs before major competitions. I also spent much time teaching myself composition. And looking for shortcuts to save time. So remember, it's not just THE time, but HOW you use it, and then WHAT you get out of it. Hope this helps! ^_^

Brickman1444 2009-01-09 at 8:24 PM UTC

I love this song. A pure masterpiece of amalgamation. You'd have to take another 10,000 effective hours to out-do yourself here.

I even made a piece of cover art so I could find this song easily in iTunes coverflow!

Amzy 2009-01-19 at 6:48 PM UTC

Ooooh nice cover!

Torley 2009-01-23 at 10:52 AM UTC

Thanx! Mmm… amalgamation, luv that word.

Jo 2009-02-24 at 11:20 AM UTC

WOOOOOW you are amazing :D Thanks so much for the sheet music! That must've took so much effort. Can't wait to start learning this beautiful music :)

Amzy Tran 2009-02-24 at 5:45 PM UTC

Wow…that's the first time someone ever called me amazing in my entire life…

You are talking about me and Jon, right?
