The joy of sushi

Posted on: November 25, 2006

Sushi's one of those rare delicacies that looks as good on the packaging as it does the actual product — mind you, I've never seen Sushi-in-a-Box before, but I'm making a point: in the rawness of that seafood and vegetables, there's beauty waiting to be consumed. After all, we wouldn't have such cute variants as chocolate facsimiles and some rather feeshy USB keys without "the original sushi".

Fitting that cravings hit me the other day, moreso than my Mom longed for pears while pregnant with me. I knew what I had to do. I was on one of my rare trips out to pick up my shipment of The Great Good Place that Robin and Betsy Linden graciously sent me, and decided to do some shopping. It was fortunate that a day in advance, I ordered my Bento Nouveau sushi, specifically the "Platter - Deluxe (Kyoto)" which looks like this:

And in-the-flesh, made fresh and tagged with a barcode, it looks like this:

Yes, rather tasty. I ate it on my bed with some of a suitably fave drink of mine, grass jelly. As my lovely wife says and I've also adopted, "YomZ YomZ!" She wanted some too and I'd love to accompany her for multiple dishes, but sushi isn't Net-transportable yet.

While this isn't the bestest sushi I've ever had, it's been the first major dosage in a long time, and that's saying a lot. I like sucking on the raw fish bits with my tongue while chomping on rice with my back teeth.

If you're looking to make your own sushi, I can't think of a finer site — both in content and presentation — than Sushi Day.

Gracious thankyous go out to the nice people at the Canadian Superstore for taking my order, and for helping me get reacquainted with sushi.

Yay for Sushi Day! I love that website and just recently made the tamago nigiri. Yummmy!

Mmmm mmm you really made it?! OMG I hope it was good, Alexander. Aye, Sushi Day is totally lickable.

It was ok. I messed up the rice and had to do it plain in the long run, but it still worked. :) The New Zealand roll is next on my list.

Sushi makes me sad because I really really really want to love it but it makes me wretch so I have to swallow it bit by bit while chugging my green tea and trying not to let on that I'm suffering to the rest of my japanese class who're seated around me including the japanese teacher's aid boy who was quite cute but later turned out to be exceedingly creepy.
Oh sushi, why must you taunt me so.

  5. Torley Says:

Iris, you ever thought of making a children's book, illustrated, with pictures of your descriptions? I can only glimpse at what someone "cute but later turned out to be exceedingly creepy" would be like. Sounds straight out of an anime if you ask me.

Well he looked like Grant Imahara from Mythbusters but 10 years younger with better teeth and sharing the same Chobits fetish (I assume) but he was creepy because He accosted my friend for a date when she had the flu, then the next day made out with my other, skankeh-er friend at a new years party. Furthermore he's one of those people who gets really really shady when he's drunk, like how people act when you fall asleep infront of them and they draw a big penis on your cheek and you wake up and that one person is the only one there and they don't tell you, and you don't know what's up, but they're acting strange.
I can't imagine many parents would buy my books.

  7. Torley Says:

    FREEEAKY.

But hey, parents could buy your books for themselves, not kids. "Grown-Up Fairytales" do exist!
