The Torley FAQ: got questions? I've got answers!

Posted on: September 1, 2007

End of the day, backwards

In the spirit of making it easier for you to find info about me, I'd like to ask you for questions which should be answered on my burgeoning FAQ. That's right, on an embryonic lark, I started growing out my very own Frequently Asked Questions list on the Second Life public Wiki, and am looking for further additions.

Part of this, naturally, is helping people easier get in touch with stuff I may or definitely already have answered before. Note that since this is my FAQ, I generally won't include stuff re: Linden Lab policy, since they're best covered elsewhere — I do make exception for things only I knew about and/or have something unique to add (the existing Infohubs question is a good example). This also means that the answers unashamedly come from my perspective, and thus should not be considered a comprehensive solution to a particular problem, but rather, my personal experiences.

So please indulge your curiosities, provide Q&A you believe would be useful to both yourself and others in the comments — and let's see how this grows!

What's the soundtrack for the Sculpted Prims demo? I'd like to try it for my Create-An-Avie concept :-D

P.S.: Please add a function to subscribe to comments! I always forget to check back and using email's much nicer '^_^. I use it for VintFalken.com :-D.

The only questions that needs answering atm: When will we get windlight back? =d ;)

    Smiley: co.comments.com

Same question as Vint. Seriously, you got us hooked and then you took it away, and now it's getting even better. I never want to take pictures or make machinima anymore. D:

    Also, do you like turtles?

  5. Torley Says:

@Smiley: I didn't do that video, Qarl Linden did, so he'd be the right sculptie-master to ask. =) For comment subscribing, I use the co.mments.com service, it has worked well for me thus far too.

@Vint and Ante: I have good news… OK, so I hope WindLight will come back in a few weeks. That being said, MOAR DETAILS…

I'm doing regular WindLight project updates @ http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden and will continue communicating up to our public First Look re-release, so keep looking there! :)

Hehe yes, I'm also hesitant on my photography for landscapes and most outdoor stuff. Although I do seek ways to make "classic" photos look better than you'd expect. Using extra lights, RenderDynamicReflections and add half transparent black walls inbetween foreground and background, Morris Vig of Oyster Bay compared my Starax Unicorn photo with WindLight :P
Also combining RenderDynamicReflections with RenderGlow can give some amazing results. Of course it are also things like these (reflective water, glow, better lighting) that make WindLight so well :)

@Daedalus: Oh, that is definitely rockin'. Local lighting and some other techniques to this day, as easy as they are to use, are still underrated. Perhaps not discoverable enough (those ones in the Client menu, definitely not easy to know about unless you hear about it from someone else). RenderDynamicReflections doesn't work as expected on either of my main PCs… wish it did!
