Things I did in my Second Life today…

2004-09-20

Dear Diary (LOL),

Today I played Yatzee — actually spelled this way IIRC?– for the very first time (virtual or real), and got second place. :) I was especially fortunate by some stroke of probability, to have the dice roll the right way and I did in fact accomplish said "Yahtzee!" I would have yelled this through the gameworld had I been more ready with my pop culture references.

I also went to a vampire party of sorts in a Vampire Empire. It was located under the water beneath a chateau.?A chateau that gave me familiar vibes of that fight scene in Matrix Revolutions where Rob Dougan's?same-titled track?is played.?I heard familiar music being played, including Rammstein's "Du Hast" — now I haven't heard that in awhile –?but still no Thomas Dolby.

There are other things I did but they're lost in my mind now like the the mental boxes from Stephen King's Dreamcatcher.?Hmmm. It's always pleasant to see newbies come into the Welcome Area and express themselves as they react to their first, "devirginized" time on SL. I am one myself, so I speak from experience. Muhahaha.

I feel Second Life has great educational potential. It's nice it lets one be creative, and were it not for the 18+ age limit, I could see a junior, even offline version of this (but what fun is that? Nooo!) packaged for the youngsters as an intro to 3D modelling, scripting, and soforth. It's kind of like the Kid Pix of this era, ya dig? Except with somewhat less "kid" (well, childish creativity is allowed to flourish!) and more multimedia oh wait what do we… OMG they're still making Kid Pix, I can't believe it.

Again, I have to state my appreciation for the diversity of the architecture. I saw some nice Greco-Roman dwellings with a lush swimming pool, some budding Jedi readying their landscapes and scripting "Jedi mind tricks" to fly across the green — nice one, Varick Eisenberg! — and in the process I told some of the Jedi to hit me. And so they did, and one particularly strong blow from a fellow named Sebastian landed me in the water past the Welcome Area, which was QUITE a ways away from the public "sandbox" where people go to make new stuff and experiment with primshaping.

Thanks goes out to Chromal Brodsky with the cute reptilian avatar for helping me to realize I had overlooked the obvious once more and that my virtual synth was missing the back panel. Whoopsie. He was part of the jam session we did the other day.?Chromal did a cool thing himself: he took photos of his real gear and imported it into Second Life and made it play all sorts of funny sounds. I like funny sounds.

I've already met several people who not only know of but like Kraftwerk, which surprises me greatly. And some synth collectors too, like the aforementioned! Ah, I am not a synth collector of any sort nor a technical maven, but I think it is a cool hobby.

OMG!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! YWOSKI TECHNOLOGIES HAS COMBINED TWO OF MY OBSESSIONS… STARGATE SG-1 AND SECOND LIFE!!! W00T!!!1

TinaStar, who visits me here and is friendly and?has an awesome hat, has her own blog now. ;)

Finally, updated my profile to reflect details more accurately, and also got around to inquiring about Event Notifications offline in the forums. There ought to be a way to temp-disable IMs too when one is in the middle of a game, especially a very chatty one.

Zzzyx. :D
