[TOOL] Embedr lets you make a video playlist from multiple sites

2009-03-13

One thing I've never liked about YouTube's playlist feature, besides the terrible usability, is that it only lets you embed YouTube videos. Makes sense, but still limits you when you find cool videos across other sites like Vimeo? And what about the question of an elegant embedded player?

Embedr (one "d") has taken a page from Apple's Cover Flow liner notes to deliver playlists that can span multiple sites. What's especially nifty is it doesn't use the site's own video-playing controls (which would look mottled and inconsistent), but has its own grafted on top. It's mostly seamless except for a bug where if you click ahead to seek, it doesn't work — but dragging does. I reported this and they're looking into it.

The site has a number of expected social features including share buttons on each playlist's page. The embed customizer is slick — kudos for such a nice custom color palette — and I didn't encounter any problems with it.

Here's my first Embedr playlist. It's every notable version of Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Rydeen" I could find on YouTube. I'll be scouring other compatible sites for more. I look forward to creating more playlists.

Made your own awesome playlist? Show me in the comments!

Embedr has been cool enough to post on the torley.com front page and sidebar in recent times. We'll see what else I can do with it, and if you do something cool, lemme know like I said.
