YouTube's long been wonky when it comes to including built-in customization for embedding their videos. Many others have unofficially beaten them to the punch, such as this code generator I've used for awhile.
But there's hope yet: for all your High-Definition videos (1280×720), there's finally a "Play in HD" checkbox which defaults to that higher quality.
However, there are still oddities, like why there isn't an equivalent option for High-Quality (HQ) vids below HD.
And what the heck is "853×505" (what a weird size) doing among these preset dimensions? "640×385" I can understand (and use). To calculate other dimensions, I've been using the Continuum Javascript Ratio Calculator.

blog post #4 today…
Torley is just a posting MACHINE!
853×505 makes the I 480 pixels tall (480p), but is still smaller than the HD video that you get, but 720p video is hard to fit in most websites, so just watch it in full screen.
Also, your comment form is nearly impossibleto use on an iPhone… You should tweak it a bit.
@thattagen Merely sharing what's on my mind! =)
@geoff Thanks for the clarification, I wasn't thinking about the added UI chrome. And I'll have a look here on my iPod Touch, then ask Chris Pearson (Thesis blog theme author) about what we can do to make it more mobile-friendly for you!
Hmmm… this looks interesting.
Yay, finally
Thanks a lot sharing
Ah! But my favorite, what-the-hell-are-you-smokin'-I-want-some watermelonie friend…! There is an ANSWER!
There is no separate url for it. However, you can force high quality
by adding "&fmt=18" at the end of the url.
yes, just plop this at the very end of your link URL:
&fmt=18
However – HQ Embed Code is a bit different… (Add the URL in embed code)
&ap=%2526fmt%3D18
Woot!
@Ari Thanks for sharing that, yeah, I use the code generator to do something similar. It's one of those things that's obvious after-the-fact. =)
