What a harrowing + inspiring day — after I made my earlier blog posts, I got knee neck-deep in a number of things. One was my Torley Textures VI… y'see, I tried to stuff this latest pack of 100 — yes, it's a double bonus! — into the ol' giver-outer, but kept getting awful script run-time errors. What's more, when I tried to compile the package (it worked for V), it stalled! (I also noticed I couldn't compile a simple "Hello avatar!" script in a cube… wonder why, worth further investigation.) On top of that, trying to drag-and-drop the textures as a batch into the object's contents resulted in "Inventory creation on in-world object failed." WTH!????
Nevertheless, I took a deep breath, fiddled with some other things for awhile, then plunged back in. I decided I needed to totally redo my texture distributor for your ease of use. So now, it looks like this:
8 panels (thus far, incl. info-square)… clicking one will give you a folder with all the textures from that series: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and LOVE. OMG did I say "three"? Yes! Previously, I had no plans to give it out, but questions led me to put it in. It's a smaller pack of 30, but more subdued, mild wallpaper… I love diversity. Here is Torley Textures III:
Before I go any further, I'd like to give a gracious thankyou to Fairge Kinsella for the "Simple freebie tracking vendor" script, based on Jeffrey Gomez's work. Credit due! The script simply gives you the FREE textures, then tells me you got a pack. Same essential info I'd know if you, say, bought something from me. So be assured, your acquisitiion will be kept private; it helps me understand who's getting — and if you let me know later, using — the Torley Textures.
Briefly, what's updated, new, & factoidlicious in VI:
- I've included [FRAMED], [PLACEHOLDER], and [GLASS] textures, prefixed for easy IDing…
- [FRAMED] ones have varying styles of borders, making them good for single repeats across entire faces.
- [PLACEHOLDER] came out of an inspired conversation with my wife; we talked about being able to use a custom default texture. These are (some of) my hopefuls, so you can quickly slap them on, focus on the structure of your prims, and not have to worry about staring at generic, depthless plywood or even leaving it as a blank eyesore.
- [GLASS] is self-explanatory; they include transparency (not shown below, but you'll see it inworld), so no need to change that setting unless you want to tweak further. I was motivated to do this by some excellent glass textures I've seen inworld with a lot of depth and shading. Gradients make a world of difference, and with subtle specks of grain, even moreso!
- I used Filter Forge severely, extensively, heavily on a lot of these. It's such an awesome creative assistant. Of course I recommend it! Procedural generation with stylish grit? Up my alley, and lends character to what might otherwise be staid, boring surfaces.
- I explored a number of art styles influenced throughout time & space: from 1-bit dithering to pop art to army camo to mashing up planetscape renderings, I know it's an awful lot to take in at once. Thankfully, we have our entire Second Lifetimes.
- Names of textures, in many instances, do have actual meanings/points of references/stories behind them. For example, "Spice Market" is a nod to Dune, making me think of what we'd see on the walls as our eyes are blue-within-blue. "Phantom Robot Ice" looks icy and is a nod to both some Mercedes ads and Bjork robots. "Fire In The Skies" is a total pointer to UFO abductions! "Gorgeous Evidence" is a cross between Edward Tufte, John Maeda, and rogue AI. And "UBER-plywood"? Hehehe, I love remixing SL culture. Thing is, if you have eclectic questions about how any of these came to be, make a comment! (I feel great about it because it reminds me of when I was a sound designer, and patches are often best named provocatively. Who wants a "Piano 1" when you can have a "Majestic Grand"?)
- You prolly already know this, but… all are 512×512 and seamlessly tiling!
- Lots of monochrome and desat'ed ones in this pack to please those who like to tint a lot. And even with the more vibrant ones, feel free to export 'em (double-click a texture in inventory, then File menu > Save Texture As), make edits, and bring 'em back in!
- A few watermelon-themed ones included, of course. Had a lot of fun making "Watermelon Crate".
Okaydoke WORDS WORDS WORDS… PICTURES = 1000s words so…
I thus present to you… TORLEY TEXTURES VI!

deliriously delicious textures..again.
Thank you I use your textures all the time, they really come in handy.
Sharing is caring. I can tell you care about our community a lot.
Ooh, ooh, ooh! VI looks absolutely wonderful! As I scan over all these little tiles of goodness my face is involuntarily doing things like =O, and :D, and a bit of ^_^.
Thanks once again Torley. I'mma go in-world and catch 'em all today! Keheheh… ^^
Oh… I have a couple of your textures and love them. I will have to go get them all! I have been needing a reason to check out Linden Village.
On a more personal note. Hello Torley. It has been awhile since I said hello. I am glad my wanderings brought me here today.
Hi Torley! Your textures are GREAT! Can I use your textures as backdrops in my photoshere?
It took a total of 3 hours to load your previous textures into both my N30 and my Photosphere.
It was time very well spent. ^^
… But at this pace, I think i need to talk to Saeya and MadamG about getting their auto-loading scripts. XD
@Iris: You're all stocked up and ready to go! And by your experience, looks like there's an opportunity to be filled. Necessity as mother of invention and all that. Saeya put some of my more watermeloney textures in my Photosphere and I'm looking forward to playing with them more.
@Ana: Thanx a lot, and yes, you sure can!
@Whimsycallie: Hello to you too and welcome back!
@Val: Nice selection of emotions there, ^_^ =O ^^. I like those! As you may know by now, I setup a Flash texture previewer compliments of Slide.com to animate the magic even more.
@Ravie: *muah*
*muah*
Some of your beautiful textures are, now, in my photosphere!
… I can only put 45!
@Ana, did you make a request to Saeya already for a greater capacity of textures? Iris Ophelia mentioned the same thing. I don't know offhand if it's possible, but of course I encourage it… MORE TEXTURES GOOD!
