While my esteemed colleagues work intensely to get Second Life back up, I'm learning about the different varieties of Linux, like Knoppix. To me, they're sort of like varied generations of citrus fruit: tangy, with noticeable difference in flavoring, but based on common conventions and parentage. It'll take a while to sink in.
If you're wondering what this has to do with my work, it's because I'm eager to make time to play with Drake Bacon's Second Life Linux Live CD, as blogged by Baba Yamamoto—sounds pretty exciting (and accessible) that I don't have to partition my hard drive to use it. (I have some traumatic experiences from youth.) So, it's downloading the .iso in the background as I type this.
The SL website is kinda being slow for me, but I recently posted a message on the forums that "More Linux client fixes are coming on their way to you!". And I can't just talk about it from some remote proxy; I want to dive in and understand, feel, live how Second Life works on Linux. So when things, good and bad and everything in between come up, I'll know what it's like. It'll also be like the rebirth of me in some ways, entering a new Operating System.
It's been a long time since I really did that (the last was Microsoft Windows, following my tenure as a Mac addict).
I will certainly say: we (Lindens) have a lot to be thankful for smart, friendly Linux-usin' Residents. I am enthused by their passion and hope to be at the next LUG meeting—as Angel Sunset mentions, it'll be in Maryport (182, 150) on Aug. 30, 12:00 PM SLT. Looking forward to it.
