Long-overdue but much needed, I created a building in a day. (I hesitate to call it a house, or even a home, for it's not been lived in yet.) This happens to be the funky — a word I've been using more — pad known as, or at least is part of, Watermelinden Land. While I can't attest to having amusing rides like ol' Walt did, I hope your eyes will get a workout!
Oh, and ears too. As I often do, if I don't find an existing solution, I'll do it myself. That's part of my prosumer thrust (still reading the Tofflers' Revolutionary Wealth). Before we go further, here, have a listen to what it sounds like around Watermelinden Land:

Nifty huh? As noted previously, I used Storm Thunders' Sound Prims. I just recorded my sonic environment as I walked around from the shore to up atop my castle. And it can be a castle, 'cause it's at least a room. As Mickey Mouse boasted on a light-switch cover, "My Room is My Castle". He got that right!
Thanx graciously to each and everyone who's come over and visited so far; pardon me for not being the most chatty while I was building. What was awesome was I got to meet some avatars who I'd only previously exchanged with on the web, e.g., email and blog comments. Like Grizzy Griswold, Aster Lardner (who made this kewl "Abalone Geekwear" art), Dimitrio Lewis, and Rainbow Drake! As I write this, Erbo Evans showed up!
(How's that for liveblogging?)
For the first time, I also met Pi Brevity, Eoin Widget, ee Aero, and s'more. And of course, fellow Lindens showed up, like Lawrence — who lives right next to me, MichaelFrancis, and Milo.
What's important here is personal connections: Watermelinden Land is part of the Linden Village, which is expanding after Pathfinder Linden took the initiative. More Lindens are moving in, and it stretches from Ambleside (the original site), to Hawkshead, to Grasmere where I am.
Looks like my parcel description isn't updating rite now, but it's supposed to say:
for you, I have *huggerz* and free textures and much to show. So plz come visit
=^_^= _keywords_: watermelon YAYZERAMA!!!!
Fun!
Past this:
- I wish I had started taking pictures earlier to show you more of the process. The theme I'm going for is sort of "the top of a clocktower got ripped off" meets "Greco-Roman bastard joy". On that front, crossed with watermelons 'course, I believe I succeeded. I might wanna put in s'more grit, and I didn't really use any fancy shadowing techniques… still open to those.

I love putting theory into practice. I got to play with particles, and quickly changed them to use a texture I made called "Sketchy Watermelon". I want to make it really really to get freebies I make, so when I was stumped for what to put in front, well, my Torley Textures display worked nicely.
Inside, I've added a few weblinks to my blog, multimedia, etc. I'm pondering what else I could showcase and increase awareness of that would enrich minds and induce smiles. This is a happy place to be.
- OK there's not really a "4" but it's my lucky number. So there!
I'm really enthused about Watermelinden Land and hope you'll come visit me (I should prolly set up a better "meeting area" too). I haven't been on a creative kick like this since, well, making my "TORLEY LINDEN bare". Which, you can get, BTW, by clicking him atop the flagpole…
FYI, I noticed a bug where after you get it, rez it, and mouseover on any prim other than the root (parent) prim, it'll still show the green L$ icon to buy. Workaround:
- Right-click it
- Edit tools > General tab
- Check then uncheck "For Sale"
I'll report that issue; in the meantime, I'd better let you know that me being "a lightning rod for bugs" means I empirically ran into a half-dozen building bugs and counting. They're on my to-do after the holiday weekend! Goes to show how mixed up Second Life is for me in work + play. =))
And if it isn't OBVIOUS already, it should be: Lindens shouldn't be all invisible and unknown. There is talk of us eating animal food: dog, cat, etc. Speaking of food, like soylent green, Second Life is made of people, and Lindens are people too. So come on by to the Linden Village and check out everyone's personality — and if you haven't yet, I hope you meet at least one real live Linden!

It was great to see you, Torley. Great seeing the new build, too. That is absolutely the most watermelony build I have ever seen.
It's work, yes, but it's play, too. As I was just telling my friend AllieKat Stovall, in Ursula LeGuin's novel The Dispossessed, the people of the planet Anarres (an experiment in nonauthoritarian communism) have their own language, Pravic, in which "work" and "play" are the same word. I think that's the right attitude to take when working in Second Life.
if that doesn't work, try this.
yeah, it was great to meet you, Torley. I will have to come back though, since watermelinden land was in its very early stages and there wasn't much to see and also you were busy building away. (: Maybe tomorrow some time. I will be ringing in 2007 virtually.
Branding is at the core of your creation. Literally executed in a day shows how well aware you are of your history and values while representing themselves is without a doubt a designer's worst nightmare. Being one if not the most significant of SL's living cores, which you are not ashamed of and ashamed should not be points at this image, a similar structure similarily committed once to represent the living core of Cristianity…

…appropriately replaced in istances by your signature fruit. How well this confirms that designing identity is never a matter of how long it takes in execution but of how well you know what you are doing.
Good job Torley!
Aww.. I went for a look, but there was no one there when I got there. Which was probably a god thing, cause I was clicking on everything that could be clicked.. you know.. looking at the links to your flickr, blog, youtube, sitting in the chair, and even looking at your photo album on the roof – getting pretty excited at how cool everything was!
then i clicked the record player and the record vanished….. sorry… *puts ears down and slinks away* =(
Guess where I was at midnight SL time, 1/1/07?
That's right. And, minutes after the annual moment, I had company.
[0:23] Lawrence Linden: nah, just wishing I could see torlet's place in all its glory
[0:23] You: I predict Torley will make a commode avatar now, the Torlet.
[0:23] Glitch Braess: LOL
[0:23] MichaelFrancis Linden: LOL
[0:23] Lawrence Linden: lol
@Erbo: You reference many fascinating books. How much my life would be enriched, my understanding of context deepened, if I read them all. I'll have to pay close attention to Pravic, tho. When I was young, I used to think telecommuting was so neat — working and playing from basically the same place? (Well, usually different rooms in the same house.) Still amazes me today.
@Storm: That cracked me up.
@Grizzy: So nice to meet you too, that adds a lot more depth, as I'd only seen still pictures of your avie before. Wowza, we're in 2007 already. Everyone keeping their resolutions?
@starcomber: Fascinating, I've never thought much about "branding" per see, but when you point it out to me, it's more clear. Intriguing analysis. I've used watermelons as a convenient symbol because with the many me's, it's hard to keep them all in a line unless there's a "master key" to unlock my identity — watermelons are it!
@Nanaki: Awww well, I do hope to see you inworld! The record is still there tho, sounds like that may have been a bug. So no harm done.
@Elix: I've missed so much fun at my place! I wanted to even be there more this week, but other work-related things took me away, whether it was behind-the-scenes on the website, or inworld 'sploring the grid. HAHAHA TORLET. OMG… that's good. *scribbles that down for a future avatar idea* Now who is a good commode manufacturer? Hmmms.
