UI Abstraction photography contest coming up!

2007-01-13

I learned from New World Notes that Osprey Therian's having… an UI Abstraction photography contest, focusing on pictures of…

C:\THE SECOND LIFE USER INTERFACE> OMG.EXE

Can I say this is a dream for me? Yes it is, especially after what I've been doing.

Needless to say, there aren't enough glitch art events in Second Life, and as an advocate of the form, I wholly encourage participation, if only to get to know what those obscure options in the Client menu do. ;) Earlier, you may recall my music video, "Knightvision", included such techniques.

Here are my two entries, one taken raw from a screenshot, the other severely post-processed:

Compared to other work I've done, they may seem kind of simple, like the country-bumpkin equivalent of memory address registers. However, I do believe there's a certain ordinateur vérité within. The first one was shot in my new MELON-MECHA avatar on Cocololo Island, and the 2nd comes from Stillman's freebie bazaar. The latter's name is in reference to fine English electronic music by the Aphex Twin; Surfing On Sine Waves is fine music to build by:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Osprey has had eclectic ideas time and time again, hitting on my faves — from roadside attractions to an Infohub-as-hilltop-oasis to this — and encouraging community participation is awesome. I really hope there are a lot of entries and I know some people off the bat who should send in; Just Will aka Mejo Kuu, for example, is someone I consider a master of the form, with pieces like these:

Also look for the Upcoming Movie Night — similarly-styled, it's gonna be a muxed-up compilation of submitted footage. I've already got my reel to send in… awaiting further format details!

Get your glitch on!

Thank you for the mention, Tor. A little more playfulness is definitely needed in both SL and RL. Fortunately we are both on the job :-D

You're certainly welcome, Os. Playfulness contributes to productivity — being generative and creative requires ideas, which often come about when one is exploring and being imaginative!
