[VIDEO TUTORIALS] More fun: notecards and Undo!

Posted on: February 15, 2007

Gosh, I've been on a rock 'n' roll! Continuing from earlier, I hope you like these too. Click-through the text links to see the accompanying articles on the Second Life Knowledge Base:

» How to create and send a notecard

» How to use Undo

What topics shall I cover next? What would be effectively taught in the video format? Please leave a suggestion in da comments! To manage expectations: I can't do it all and I'm sharing these ideas with fellow Lindens @ the Lab… but with your help, I reckon there are some sweet spots we can target — and improve the quality of entertaining education for SL whilst doing so!

haha I love your video tutorials!! This is an awesome way to demonstrate stuff, and I think we can all identify with losing objects in walls or dragging the wrong arrow or WORSE XD

*thinking* Is there any way you could rig up a video screen inworld somewhere to display these?

    Hey Torley,

Why don't you cover some issues of a technical nature, like explaining, diagnosing and combating Lag?

    Sabrina

  3. Pompo Bombacci Says:

Yes Sabrina I was gonna say that but ya were faster!:)

I think a video tut on how to change the preferences for a better performance would be great; not all users have top notch computers and even those lucky ones with high end ones sooner or later are goin' to have to deal with lag and optimizing the experience by sliding a few dozen controls and checking things on/off stuff. Also how to optimize watching the green and yellow bars, most of ppl I talked to thinks its a one time setting and that's it!

There are a gozzilion settings and i'd say GO FOR IT Torley! :)

forgot to say…these aren't regular video tuts ya see on the net! These are fun and entertaining too!

  5. Torley Says:

Dimitrio, let the record stand I made these out of a frustrated joy because my eyes were bleeding from reading too much (that's a large chunk of my workdays, processing textual data) and I sure wanna show 'em inworld: I could QuickTime 'em if there's a big enough demand… otherwise, in the future, I hope we can play embedded Flash inworld.

Sabrina, I agree, lag (in its myriad causes and varieties) is always a big one. I've done video bug reports before showing various things gone wrong with Second Life. One challenge about lag, tho, is recreating various things: we have some tools that can induce packet loss and dropping a lot of physical prims will slow a region's time dilation to a crawl, but I want to be in actual, non-artificial situations, accurately showing what a Resident would realistically expect and experience.

Pompo, doing a video for Preferences would be a good compliment for the [http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=335 text + pictures guide I wrote]. One significant strength of realtime video is it shows changes live, like watching over my shoulder in realtime.

Thank you so much for the helpful feedback — I like to educate AND entertain (since if you can't remember it due to a lack of fun, why bother)!

May I take this opportunity to nominate an 'Inventory Management' tutorial before I lose control of mine totally?

  7. Phoenix Ellsberg Says:

First off, I LOVE your tutorials Torley! Even the ones that don't teach me anything new are such fun to watch. The one I learnt most from though was the 'tiny prims' tutorial - very useful.

One subject I would have liked more info on when i started is the use of textures. At first i could only apply a texture, straight out of the box, so to speak, and it took ages to learn about offsets, rotations and repeats, let alone texturing an individual surface! I was lucky enough to have someone who had been in SL for a while who could teach me, but if I hadn't, I don't know where I'd have found this stuff out except by trial and error.

Keep up the good work Torley :-)

Oh, and I love the previous comment about inventory! I could do with a few tips on that subject myself!

  8. Torley Says:

Flugel, you certainly may! Great idea… *writes it down!* Over time, I've become better at managing my Inventory, but it still remains a daily chore!

Phoenix, thanxies muchly! I like the way you said that, and am glad you find them fun. I want to touch on both stuff that's really obvious but needs to be more accessible, AND the more obscure, eclectic gems (like "tiny prims"). Great suggestion re: the textures… *gets that one!* ever been to Idea City? I blogged about it previously, Forseti Svarog did an inworld texturing tutorial:

In addition, I agree video is a good idea, because textures involve so many realtime changes when you're experimenting.

    My appreciation for the suggestions!
