What are your fave SL communities OUTSIDE of Second Life?

Posted on: September 17, 2008

This, I wish to know. I love seeing both the Resident-run sites expressly started with Second Life in mind, and how pockets of SL-centric strength have built up in other places — that Second Life Flickr group always comes to mind, with over 7,500 members and 220,000+ pix, many of them Residents (or otherwise interested in SL), I'm willing to bet.

Do you spend a lot of time sharing photos somewhere? Do you talk about SL on an external forum? (At work, tsk tsk, or just can't login?)

Here's another question(s): what do you wish was bridged better between inworld and the web? What connections have you struggled to make? For example, one of my pains is lacking a practical web-based way to manage inworld correspondence like I do my Gmail, leading me to use this contact form.

Also, related but not the same: what do you think are the BIGGEST SL communities OUTSIDE of Second Life? Here's a gander: Facebook's Second Life Link app has 1,750+ monthly active users. That's more than I would've guessed. It in itself isn't a community, but it enables Resis to find each other on Facebook. Not unlike a secret handshake. Except not secret.

Tell me your joys! And some sorrows too, those are OK. We'll want to cheer you up, tho.

(I like seeing Resident names on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc. — one place I don't see a lot is on YouTube, presumably because of how they don't allow 2-word names and disallow namechanges.)

I use a number of services but the ones I use the most are:

    * Plurk (very friendly and supportive SL community. We have in-world catch-ups; have a Flickr group and there are a few groups you can join in SL. I have a link from my profile to various SL resources including a list of SL avatars on plurk. Thraxis has created & sells a Plurk HUD so you can plurk from in-world.)

    * Flickr (I am in a number of many second life groups and am moderator of the SL Tourist Board Group http://www.flickr.com/groups/sl_touristboard/. Each picture submitted to the SL Tourist board must include a SLURL so people can easily teleport to the location where the picture was taken to look around. I'm a happy snapper and originally got my Flickr account to gape in awe and comment on the amazing stuff that other second lifers share on Flickr).

I try to keep an updated list of all of my social network and related sites on my Second Life(tm) Wikia page: http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/User:Moggsoceanlane.

I have met many more residents in-world since being on plurk and it gives us a way to share information about upcoming events, new releases and to play together outside of second life. Unlike twitter, conversations are threaded so you get a better sense of community and friendships seem to develop easily in this environment.

I just knew about this services and communities and, like Torley, i was very curious about. For people who don´t know,i will tell that you can find a friend who is in that communities if he/her is between your mails contacts…and…i found surprises! hehe
Flick is the most popular for photos and facebook for contacts, i think. I liked facebook, maybe even you can find friends from University or school! Anyway, i don´t have too much time for all! and i prefer my spare time for my loved SL!

hmmmm I guess I don't get out much. Soooo, outside Second Life…
    on the web:
    1) Twitter is my favourite - to the point - well sometimes
    and
    2) RL… where I can experience the caffeine with my sl friends (some of whom I knew before but became friends in SL)
    and ta, da,
    3) SLCC!!
    good night Torley

I make the forums http://www.sluniverse.com as my out of SL home, run by Cristiano Midnight who also hosts the SL picture site http://www.snapzilla.com

Plurk. It is interesting how some sites just sticks. We tried with Pownce last year, but for unknown and misterious reasons, it just didn't work out.

    I use Flickr a lot.
I got my flickr accout to be able to show to my SL friends the thousands shots I made.
Since I used to shot a LOT of photos in SL I wish there was an automatic way to embed both the slurl and the name of every avatar on the screen inside the shot.
I've read the post from Torley about a hud that postards to flickr adding the slurl but it sends the image with dimensions different from the one I use (I'm addicted to HI-res shots).
I guess the client knows who are the visible avatars so I wish for an automatic name embed :)
And sice I'm dreaming an automatic (full size) upload to flickr would be nice :-)
    (I know I'm a dreamer ^_^ )

I use Twitter a lot. Just like almost everything, I started using it for educational purposes. I'm writing an Internet class dealing with multi-media and social networking.

My Space is used mostly by my friends in SL live music. So, is that considered outside SL? Hmm… could be debatable.

I've got to admit between all the SL activities and addiction most of my networking is in SL or in RL. :-)

Twitter is the main one for me, along with Plurk ( although I think Plurk definitely needs an autoupdating desktop client as soon as possible ( similar to the excellent twirl for twitter ).

I also keep in contact with many residents using Skype, even though I use SLVoice alot too ( sometimes im in two calls simultaneously ! )

I also enjoy keeping in contact via shows like Metaverse Week in Review on Operator 11. Forums like the SLMC forum are good too.

  12. Torley Says:

Thx for the comments sharing your faves! I'll check out the links I'm not familiar with yet.

@Moggs: I haven't been much on Plurk, but your reminder prompts me to visit more.

Always happy to see more use of SLURLs, esp. with Direct SLURL making it easier: I hope more people who aren't yet in SL discover the SL Tourist Board Group photos and are inspired to join!
